I-TALK OF THE TOWN I
The toy pistol claimed a victim
in Auburn.
Judge Towne is reported to be
regaining health rapidly at the
Springs.
John Grooms , of Sparks , was
in town Saturday and called on
the DEMOCRAT.
Mrs. SamTracewell , of Simeon ,
died last Friday from dropsy aft
er a lingering illness.
The Elkhorn and Union Pacific
are buying land on which to build
a union depot at Fremont.
F. J. Welke , of Wood Lake , was
in town Saturday and jogged the
date of his subscription ahead to
1903.
1903.The
The Indians danced Wednes
day evening and on Thursday it
rained. They should be induced
to dance oftener.
Note the change in Anderson
& Fischer's ad. They now carry
a full line of coffins and under
takers' supplies.
King Ed announces that lie will
have his crown on straight Aug
ust 9th and no postponement on
account of weather.
Isaac Morgareidge called on
the DEMOCRAT. He will return
to his Alabama home as soon as
he can settle up his business
here.
J. L. King , of Denver , repre
senting the fraternal beneficiary
order known as The Fraternal
Union of America , is in town rvith
the intention of organizing a loc'ge '
of the order. This society , thoug'h
young in years , is making rapid
gains in membership.
U. S. Deputy Marshal Jim Al-
en came up from Omaha Satur
day and arrested Ed Garber , one
of the soldiers at the Fort , on the
harge of selling booze on the mil-
tary reservation and took htm to
Omaha. He took two other sol
diers along as witnesses.
The Indians intended giving a
sham battle on Main street Mon
day evening but the authorities ,
fearing accidents , would not per
mit it. The Indians knowing
that not enough people would go
to their camp to pay for the am -
munition , cut out that part of tho
program.
The village of Newman Grove ,
in Madison county , has the best
sidewalks of any place of its size
in the state. They passed a very
stiingent sidewalk ordinance and
then elect one of their lumber
dealers on the board of trustees
and he looks after his business
interests by having the ordinance
strictly enforced. Other villages
might be greatly improved bj"
adopting their plan.
From the Cody Cow Boy we
loarn that on Monday of last week
the marshal of that town arrest
ed Dan Morgan , a young horse
thief who escaped from Sheriff
Layport about two years ago and
felt so proud of his achievement
that he paraded his prisoner
around town to show a sample of
his work bufe Morgan escaped be
fore the sheriff could get there to
take charge of him.
An eastern dramatic paper de
votes several pages in a recent
number te pictures of a Leaven-
worth girl , Vivian Blackburn.
She is sliown fencing , washing
her head , emer ging from a milk
bath , etc , , but nothing is said
about her real name being Cora
Suberkrup. rt is indeed sur
mounting obstacles and overcom
ing environrr ient when a girl
named Suber'krup attains a milk
butliv Atolii ; joa Globe.
A cloudburst struck Platts-
mouth last Friday and the main
business street was under three
feet of water. Cellars were flood
ed and the damage runs up into
the thousands.
A Kansas paper heads its an
nouncements of births , marriages
and deaths "the cradle , " "the al
tar " and ' 'the grave. ' ' This is an
improvement on "hatched"
"matched" and "snatched. "
Quite a pleasant family reun
ion was held last Wednesday at
the residence of Mrs. Daniel Hub-
bard , in Valentine , to celebrate
the visit of : her sister , Mrs. Maria
Coulter , of Conrad , Iowa. About
fifty were present.
The Valentine ball club went
to the Fort Sunday and were de-
defeated so badly that they did
not know they were in the game.
They should let up on trying to
play ball and confine themselves
to marbles. It is nearer their
capacity.
A large number of Indians
came to town early Monday morn
ing and danced all the morning
to the music of a bass drum solo.
They put more "ginger ' * into the
dance than did those who danced
last week. The most of them
broke camp Tuesday morning.
A petition is being circulated
and signed by every business man
asking for the pardon of Antoine
Ladeaux , the Indian policeman
who was sent to Lincoln last win
ter on a one year term for man-
slaughter when he should not
have been sent there at all. He
was captain of the Indian police
and for many years has been the
fr jend of the white man and often
it atime when the white man was
sorely in need of a friend. Judge
Westover strongly recommends
bhepardon and on the petition
are , the names of the prosecuting
attorney and some of the jury.
Grov. Savage cannot do better than
to turn the old man loose.
Freddie , the fifteen-year-old
son of Wm. Franke , had the toes
of his right foot cut off by a mow
ing machine Monday morning at
his father's ranch , about fifteen
miles from Valentine. He was
hitching up and one of the horses
was inclined to be a little Yvild
and ran away and caught the boy
before he could get out of the
s ay. He was brought to town
ind taken to Dr. Furay's office ,
where a little more of the foot
was amputated to enable them to
iress the wound. The boy was
game and wanted the doctor to
go ahead with the cutting as soon
is he reached the office and cool
ly remarked that the toes of that
foot wouldn't get cold next win
ter. Dr. Goodrich assisted with
the operation.
Chas. T. Harrison , represent
ing the Carpenter Paper Co. , of
Omaha , was in town last Friday
evening and , with several other
traveling men , went to see the
Indians dance. He happened to
stand close to the dancers and one
squaw who seemed to possess a
sense of humor placed her arm
around him and drew him up to
the dance. He didn't need any
paint his face was red enough
without it. The meanest part of
the affair was when an old buck
attempted to collect ten cents for
the privilege of dancing with his
beautiful daughter the traveling
man repudiated and went off and
drowned his sorrow in a flowing
bowl of red lemonade. We believe
that "those who dance should pay
the fiddler , " thoughthe fiddler
in this case 'was a tlrunrmer ,
