A Soldier Shot Through the
Foot ,
Two soldiers in the Kangaroo Rest
aurant who had been out looking for
some one who was suspected of taking
a blanket and one handing the other
some cartridges to put in his revolver
handled them in such a way as to dis
charge his revolver into the foot of
the other. The ball passed through
the instep in a downward courseiand
as no bones were broken and the ball
passing clear torough the foot it is
not thought that it will be a danger
ous wound. The boys got angry when
we asked their names and as it is of
little consequence we do not print
them.

Has it Come to This ?
There are times when men in high
places measure themselves beforth
p u ple H * President Roosevelt lu by
osher da > befoie the American i ut.nn
in the Tillnmn-McLwuran case. That
these men were out of order i * the
United States senate there is no c .nice
to dispute. But whatPresident | r.oose-
velt had to do with it is open for dis
cussion. That Pres. Roosevelt has a
right to invitewhom he wishes to the
white house be he white or bl .ick
none will dispute ; but when that party
is invited , it is a decided insult to re
voke that invitation. The South Caro
lina people seem to look at it as an in *
suit and fling back the insult by direct
ing Lieutenant Governor Tillman to
send the following letter to President
Koosevelt this week :
A short while ago I had the honoi to address
to your excellency a letter , requesting that on
the occasion of your visit to Charlestov.-u yon
present a sword to Major Mlcah Jenkins of the
First United States volunteer cavalry , of whose
gallant services * you spoke so highly , your words
being engraved on the scabbard. You accepted
the invitation , for v-liicu i\e thank you. lam
now requeued by contributors to the sword
fund to ask you that you withdraw said ; icept-
ance. JAMES H. TILLMAX ,
Late Colonel First South Carolina Volunteer
Infantry and Lieutenant Governor South
Carolina.
Mr. Tillman , in being interviewed ,
said that he regretted that he was re
quired , by direction of the sword con
tributors , to have to send the telegram ,
especially in view of the lact that he
was so closely related to the senator
who but a few days ago was subject to
an affront which was seemingly un
warranted. The colonel had no need
to apologize for the telegram. The
senator , when he was insulted w&s not
even held in contempt by the senate
when he was snubbed by the presi-
d ent. The only offense that Senator
Tillman had committed was striking
the man who had called him a liar in
the United States senate. The Till-
mans are not made that way. Then
all that tho senator was guilty of has
been taught by President Roosevelt
over again as the correct thing to do-
never be a coward. The people of the
United States are considering the posi
tion of the two senators , and they
know that one of them has bad tho pat
ronage of the administration , and the
other has been fighting for a principle.
Judge ye between the two men who
will. But the people of South Carolina
know the two men , and they name the
man who. was insulted. Fremont
Leader.
Visit of Prince J enri/ ,
John William Henry , of Prussia , ar
rived and of America's
many mos hys
terical patriots have gone into convul
sions of ecstasy to think that they may
hnvo tne exalted privilege of licking
his hand , or mayhap to weep upon his
shirt bosom , or forsooth , to gaze wjth
melting tenderness into those sacred
eyes. For Hen is a prince of the roy
al and most sacred line of Sauer Kraat ,
Sweitzer Cheese and Wienerwurst
His nibs , the prince , will find those
who fondle upon him first , aud fail all
over each other to do him honor , are
tickle as first love. They are a olass
given to the amusing habit of pi icing
their goddess upon a very high pedestal
then kicking the legs from undar it
and down it comes to break into acorns
upon the i ocks below.
As an example wo cite the Dewey
and Hobson incidents ; these two
worthy gentlemen were sacrificed up
on the altar of finicism. They osc lat-
ed Hobson to death , and they crucified
Dewey upon the cross of vanity They |
begged pennies and dimes of .ittle
children with which to buy Mr. Diwey
a house , which in his weakness he ac
cepted. In the conservative mind Mr.
Dewey and Mr. Uobson performed a
very creditable deed for their country
and deserve a place in the hearts of :
their countrymen , but yet they did no
more _ than the . schedule of war _ plans _
for such men to perform , and for just
such effects , Uncle Sam pays out mil
lions every month in hard coin. Yet
such men deserve praise from every
conservative mind , and not hysterical
gush from fools.
Prince Henry may be a good priore
as far as royalty goes , but royalty poes
not even a hair's breadth in the true
American mmd. No honor or hysreri-
cal emotion is due from America ei'.her
to Prince Henry or the country which
he represents. O.
