Mr Davenport will also attend the
Grand Lodge of Odd Fellows at York
this state which convenes this week
The races are over and most cf our
people say that the occasion was a
success Why not advertise your busi
ness enterprise with the medium that
helps to make a success of anything
for the good of our town While our
expense foi the occasion was greater
than the profits there are some who
profited by the races being made suc
cessful Yet there are some who
think they do not owe a newspaper
anything and try to slide through on
the advertising done and paid for by
others
The Graduates
Saturday evening was the time
fixed for the ninth annual commence
ment exercises of the Valentine High
School The graduates numbered
eleven all young ladies who stand
high in the social circle of Valentine
and are possessed of superior qualifi
cations and educational ability as
shown by the able manner in which
they delivered their orations on sub
jects well chosen Truth and Pur
ity a befitting motto was the one
chosen by these young ladies and
blue and white were made the class
colors The program was excellent
Mesdames L Bivens and S Morey
sang a duet that was full of music
The violin solo by Miss Moses was
highly appreciated and the talent of
Miss Maxwell was shown in her per
formance on the piano The Demo
crat congratulates all interested in
the graduating exercises for making
them the crowning features of school
work for Valentine school a name
to be enyied aud for the teaching
profession a tribute The following
are the graduates all of whom were
present with the exception of Miss

county were here and some from oth
er parts of the state The half mile
dash was made in 49 sec on Thurs
day by Macy Powell
Frank Prawitz received a- telegram
asking him to come and announcing
the death of his father at Whitcomb

a fine cellar under his store bnilding
The sides are cemented and the iloor
will be of hard dirt The cellar will
hold several hundred bushels of pota
toes and other eatables for which a
cellar is useful

C W Gaskill of North Table tells
us that a barn belonging to Levi
Woodruff was burned Sunday evening
September 30 Three head of horses
were burned two of them belonging
to C W Gaskill About 30 tons of
hay a wagon and five sets of harness
were also burned A lantern had
been left hanging in the barn for a
few minutes and upon returning the
barn was found to be enveloped in
flames It is supposed that some loose
horses knocked the lantern down and
caused the fire
Oscar R Thompson of Wisner and
Miss C Jennie Deity were married at
the home of her sister Mrs Frank T
Prawitz in this city Saturday even
ing October 6 1900 by Rev Cumbow
of the M E Church Miss Deily has
made her home with her sister here
since last spring and has made many
friends She returned last week from
a visit at her former home in Wisner
