SHOT TWO SOLDIERS
G H Thompson Shoots Five Times and
Hits Every Time He Shoots
One man shot in the head thrice and
another twice is Valentines record
for last night Both men were sol
diers Privates London and Milliment
of Co K First Cavalr3r and they were
shot by C H Thompson London will
die it is thought
Last night London and Milliment
came to town from Fort Niobrara and
about 2 oclock this morning went to
Thompsons house near the railroad
for what special purpose is not known
and not being able to rouse the pro
prietor who is a saloonkeeper and
had been up late they then proceed
ed to break down the doors One was
burst open and at the sound Thomp
son jumped out of bed grabbad his re
volver a double action 38 and start
ed for the front room As he entered
the room from the noith the outer
door burst open and Thompson began
shooting Fiye loads were in the gun
and when the weapon was emptied
one man was seen going to Walcotts
livery barn his hands to his face and
the other was writhing on the ground
Thompson went immediately to the
city marshal and gave himself up af
ter which the coroner and sheriff were
summoned Together the officials
Fathered up the wounded and took
them to Dr Holsclaws office where
an inventory of their injuries was ta
ken alter wmen a messenger was
sent to Fort Niobrara
The examination showed that Lon
don was shot once in the face to the
right of the nose once in front of the
right ear and again in the back of
the head Milliment was shot once
on each side of the head the bullets
ranging downward and lodging in the
neck The faces of both men were
powder marked and when seen by the
reporter this morning they were ter
rible sight as each was bleeding pro
fusely and their faces were badly
swollen Londons left side seemed
to be paralyzed and his alcernate
pleadings and curses while rolling in
delirium were shocking The other
man was not so badly hurt although
he is in a very bad condition
About 8 oclock the men were taken
to the government hospital and at
last accounts London was still alive
Thompson is under arrest pending
the result of his shots and from the
standpoint of most of our citizens he
did the proper thing No statement
has been made by either of the sol
diers so far as we can learn
Tried to Kill His Comrade
Near the mouth of the Minnecha
duza a couple of soiled doves recently
established their nest and the place
being near was frequented by soldiers
from Fort Niobrara to a great ex
tent Sunday night a squad of them
were present indulging in a drunken
orgy when a quarrel arose over one
of the birds Privates Goldberg and
McLester being the principal partici
pants The former envied the place
the latter occupied in the womans
affections and tried to enter the por
tion of the house occupied by the
pair despite McLesters warning
The door was finally broken down and
McLester backed up his threat with a
shot from his revolver which struck
Goldbeig in the right breast pene
trating a lung All in the house was
instantly confusion and McLester es
caped while the wounded man was be
ing taken to the hospital A patrol
was immediately sent out foi the
fugitive but he could not be found
Tuesday about noon Judge Mogle
at Cody 40 miles west lajT down to
rest and was disturbed by his little
girl who informed him she had just
seen a soldier pass the house Be-
window and observing the caution
with which the man proceeded con
cluded that he was a deserter and
went to the depot to wire the officers
There he learned of the shooting af
fair and organizing a posse started
after the soldiercapturing him about
eight miles west of Cody McLester
denied Ms identity and told a very
Dretty story about how he belonged
at Fort Robinson and was tr3Ting to
get to the post having gone broke
and being put off the train at Nenzel
but he was brought to Valentine yes
terday andis now in the guard house
at the Fort
Goldberg still lives and stands a
fair chance of complete recovery

In the argument of the Coil murder
trial last Saturday the fact was
brought to public notice that within
the history of the county including
the time it was connected with Sioux
county there were twenty two mur
ders committed and there had never
been a conviction in the courts in all
that time There had been convic
tions which had been given new trials
and finally acquitted George Coil is
the first conviction yet made in Dawes
county The verdict seems to give
very general satisfaction Chadron
