League meeting- Tuesday night was well attendedthe church being comfortably filled de spite the fact of another entertain ment being in progress the same I night Miss Lois Hills was the first speak er and dealt with the history of in temperance and offered good sugges tions for bringing the temperance forces together During the course of her remarks she said that it was the saloon not the saloonkeeper that should be attacked by law and said the original packrge law was to prohibition what the fugitive slave law was to abolition In other words the purpose of local option was de feated by the original package She was followed by Gertrude Moon with a recitation excellently deliv ered Pro Watson spoke on Agitation and Education contending that proper education of the boy would make a sober and industrious man He said the saloon was not ihe pri mary source of the evil of intemper ance and that no person- wilfully be came a drunkard Every drunkard is a mistake either of education ex ample or environment Speaking of the food properties of alcohol he said the poisons so far exceeded the food that it should not be used In an able paper C H Cornell con tended that in the social feature lay the greatest power of the saloon It is the only place wheie men of all classes may congregate and talk with freedom where they meet everybody on a level and where they may al ways be sure of a welcome His rem edy is the establishment of a temper ance saloon with coffee lunch and light drinks billiards etc in fact all the features of a liquor saloon with gambJing and liquor left out the place to be run not for profit alone but for the convenience of the public Judge Walcott closed the meeting with an eloquent addresson Whence Comes the Right to Destroy the Sa loon and asserted that it was one of the oldest rights of man sanctioned by the law of God six thousand years ago which says Touch not taste not handle not the unclean thing He said the people had the right to destroy the business as a matter of protection to their families The law of the state made it a crime to poison a dog but not a boy A New Enterprise Talked About D P Ashburn a representative of the Fremont Creamery Co was in town this week and addressed a num ber of leading business men and far mers on the subject of establishing a skimming station here His propo sition is this A company is to be formed witft a capital of 2000divided into 40 shares of 50 each and this money is to be used for erecting the necessary build ing installing machinery etc after which his company proposes to lease the outfit for a period of ten years and agreeing to run the separator six days a week in summer and three days a week in winter paying for but ter fat extracted from the milk the same price the company pays at its headquarters in Fremont The com pany is to no expense after the plant is erected the Fremont people stand ing all expenses but neither will the local concern receive any rent for the plant unless the average amount of milk received reaches 3000 pounds per day It is estimated that 150 cans will supply this quantity When de livery reaches 3000 ponnds per day the Fremont company is to pay 6 per cent on the capital stock as rental and this rental raises until it reaches 2 per cent when 10000 pounds is de livered per day All stockholders are to get their milk skimmed free and others must pay two cents per hun dred which revenue goes to the local company No contracts for milk are to be made the company taking as much or as little as is offered We have not yet learned what suc cess Mr Ashburn has had in securing stock subscriptions as he went to Gordon where he is building a plant and will not return until tonight His plan seems to be fair and honest and we believe it can be made a success New Weather Man E J Davenport local agent of the IT S weather bureau has received notice that Observer Beahan will re lieve him of his duties as station agent on March 20 This is done be cause the bureau has been discontin uing some stations recently and Mr Beahan being a regular official must be kept employed The office will be retained where it now is and wc hope to sec Mr Davenport soon Messrs Crabb Hornby Moon and Ward the committee recently ap pointed to locate the new road across the Minnechaduza canvon went out last Friday and performed their duty and the surveyor will complete the work this week The new road will turnto the east about 20 rods north of the creek then continue up the side hill in a northeasterly direction to the gulch up which the old well trail ran but still continuing on the side hill to the top coming out on the Table about half a mile south and a little east of Camms place This will make a good road it is thought and can be built cheaply Prominent property northwest of town near the Rosebud road was burned to the ground not a solitary piece of timber remaining where the house ence stood The premises were unoccupied and how the fire started is a mystery The property being half a mile from the city limits and no neighbors near it was impossible to do anything toward saving it from destruction This house was built in Valentines early days and is said to have csst 2200 Mrs C F Martin was in town the first of the week disposing of her household goods and left Tuesday night to join her husband at Alliance V A Northrop and family came down
