Death of J. M. Carpenter.
Died , at his home in this placelast
Saturday morning , after a protracted
illness. John Milton Carpenter , aged
71 years. Burial took place on the
afternoon of the same daT.
Mr. Carpenter was born in New
York in September , 1828 , and early in
life moved to Illinois , emigrating
later to Marshalltown , Iowa , from
which place he came to Valentine , in
1883 , settling on tfie North Table and
engaging in farming. In 1891 he
moved to town and opened a store in
the building now occupied b3r Folks &
Sons. He sold out his stock a few
years afterward but again started in
business when his building became
vacant. His residence in the north
part of town was , when it was first
built , considered one of the finest in
town , and he has at all times been
looked upon as one of our best citizens
and dying , leaves benind him a host
of warm business and personal
friends.
Deceased leaves to mourn him a
faithful wife , to whom he was mar
ried fifty years ago last June , who is
suffering from a stroke of paral3rsis
which robs her o ± all ordinary enjoy
ments of life ; two daughters , Mesdames -
dames W. A. Pettycrew and J. E.
Pettycrew , of this place , and a son ,
M- of Marshall-
Charley Carpenter ,
town. Iowa , who came here to be at
the bedside of his father several
weeks ago. The funeral was excreme-
ly simple , the Rev. Cumbow conduct
ing the services.

Carpenter , therefore be it

Valentine Lodge No. 6 , of the Sons
and Daughters of Protection , do ten-
tender our sincere sympath } ' to the
bereaved sister and brother in this ,
their heavy affliction , be it

orial be sent to our sister and broth
er and that a copy be spread upon the

W. T. Kinkaid , deputy grand master
for this district , in the presence of
about fifty invited guests , besides the
members of the order , who numbered
as many more. After the impressive
installation ceremonies were con
cluded the lodge and guests adjourned
to The Donoherwhere a splendid ban
quet was served one befitting the oc-
casHon. Ed Clarke was installed as

Revenue Officers Test Whiskey.
Deputy Collector Seeley , of Madi
son , and Special Guager Painter , of
Philadelphiaemployes of the internal
revenue department , were in town
over Sunday , and Monday they exam
ined all the whiskey in town , testing
it and looking at the stamps. Paint
er has been in the service for over
eight years , and says that for the
size of the place Valentine carries
more brands and better grades of
whiskey than any other town in the
west. It is but fair to say that the
best , or at least the highest proof
whiskey found in town , was at the
Palace , under the office of the NEWS-
DEMOCRAT. They left town Monday
afternoon for A ins worth , and as the
saloon at that place handles the same
goods as Stetter Bros , do here we
presume their work will find the Cob
web bar to be in first-class condition.
A Quiet Wedding.
At the Episcopal church , last Sun

dent of this place for some time. The
NEWS-DEMOCRAT wishes this worth jr
