STOCK NOTES ,
> IAJU
As a stockmen's advertising medium
this paper is growing in favor every
day , and all up-to-date advertisers re
cognize the fact.
The American Galloway Breeders
Association will hold its next annua
convention at Chicago , and will have a
combination sale at the Internationa
Live Stock Exposition.
From this time on it-is probable thai
stockmen will be forced to do more
feeding than they have m the post , but
reports indicate that no shortage of
feed will occur this winter.
s
The Equity Sheep , Cattle and Land
Company has filed articles of incorpor
ation in Dawes county , with LeRoy
Hall and the 1 reeman Bros , as incor-
porators. The capital stock of the com
pany infixed at $100,000 , and its object
is to engage in the sheep and cattle
business , especially the former.
Monday E. P. Mark brought 100
head more cattle over from the Ditch
Company's ranch neur O'Neill and put
them in with those already here. This
makes 350 head of feeders in the Lynch
yard. That number will coisume : but
a small part of the corn crop of the
country. Lynch Journal.
A typical beef animal should have a
thicker neck than the dairy breeds ; the
flesh should begin at the front ; the ani
mal should have the greatest possible
thickness of flesh along the back be
tween the shoulder and the hips , and
the width of the hip s'tould be carried
forward to the shoulders.
The weather continues line , very
fine , despite the queer antics of the live
stock , the rheumatic pains , the barom
eter disturbances and all other indica
tions of storm for the past ten days.
Let er continue , , and the stock owners
will/continue to smile , as they report
every stem of stacked winter feed un
disturbed to date. Crawford Bulletin.
The sand hill steer has by rapid
strides forged ahead until he is sought
after by intelligent cattle feeders.
These cattle as a rule are well bred and
make good gains when put in the feed
ing pens. Commission salesmen say
they receive better prices for sand
hillers than they do for steers from any
other portion of the state. Alliance

Peter Dupree , living at Leslie , S. ! > . ,
is said to own the largest herd of buf
falo now in America. It consists of
forty full bloods , one hundred half
bloods and thirty three-quarter bloods.
The mixed animals show the finest hide
and th6 hair is much flner and closer
than the full bloods. lie has offered
thirty of the full bloods and all of the
half bloods to the United Mates gov
ernment , to be put in Yellowstone
Park , at $800 per head. Denver Stock-

This paper has always advocated the
purchase of pure bred sires for all kinds
of stock , although some of our readers
say a "grade" male is as good as any
other. Jn this connection we are
pieased to publish the following from
an eastern paper :
"It is quite true that hornless grades
do get a good many , polled
calves , so , too , do mulev "sports" that
are without any breeding whatever.
Why it is we don't know. It is on a
par with the fact that Hereford grnda
sires almost invariably make white-
faced calves , much to the detriment of
the reputation of the breed. " -
The Nebraska Experiment Station
has just issued Bulletin No. 01 , treat
ing of Hungarian brome grass. It is a
dry weather grass , imported from Rus
sia , | and has been found admirably
adapted to the semi-arid region of this
country.The subject matter of the
bulletin comprises (1) ( ) tests of' the grass
on the station farm , (2) tests by various
persons throughout the state , and (3) )
directions for sowing and caring for
the crop. The bulletin may be ob
tained free of cost by writing to the
Agricultural Experiment Station , Lin
coln , Nebraska.
Speaking of the hide market last
week , an Omaha paper says :
"The influence of the tight money
market is making itself felt and the
tanners are waiting to see later results.
Both buyers and sellers feel that the
edge is "off the hide markets , at least for
the remaining days of ' 99. At present
it is a buyer's market , the softness of
the packer's hide market has its influ
ence on country hides -Country col
lectors aie beginning to show alarm. "
This condition is a direct result of the
trust's interference with themarket ,
and it having purchased most of the
available hide , its next move is watched
with interest. Every change in the
hide market effects the stockman.
Patrick Fruh , sometimes called Fred
for short , tells us that he has outwitted
all the coyotes and wolves on Chantier
creek , says the Fort Pierre Stock Jour
nal , lie finds them perfectly harmless
and there is no danger in allowing his
flock of sheep and goats to keep the
company of the neighboring wolves and
coyotes. lie explains his discovery in
this wise : As is well known to Chicago
and St. Louis wool buyers , Patrick is
extensively engaged in thp production
of cockle burrs. lie allows his sheep
and goats to run at will in his cockle-
burr patshes. and the result is that
about the time Mr. Wolf jumps onto
the neck of Mr. Lamb he finds a solid
coat of cockle burrs , and he is unable
to penetrate them , so he gracefully sub
mits to the inevitable and tries to make
friends with his new companion
R. Lewis.one ot the prominent stock
men of Keya Pah.i count } ' , sends the
following letter to the press as his rein-
edy for the dreaded cornstalk disease
which is playing such havoc east of us.
He claims to haVe tested the remedy
thoroughly , and says it gives good re
sults :
I think I have found a remedy for
the "stalk disease" among cattle , and
as it may save some persons from l./ss I
wish you would publish it in your pa
per. For calves or yearlings give two
tabl espoonfulls of glauber salts , for
cows give four taldespoonsfull , slit tail
about three inches , and the ears clear
to the head as soon as the animal is ta
ken sick. Doses of salts should be re
peated every half hour until relieved.
Since our last issue we have heard of
this disease in many counties of the
state , and it seems to us that if stockmen -
men > weuld only take one or two good
papers like the > EWS-DEMOCRAT and
apply to them for information when
they need it , much loss would be pre
vented.
At Ames , Iowa , last week , the nine
teenth annual session of the Shorthorn
breeders was held , and one of the
speakers made the following very per
tinent remarks , speaking on "The
Range Trade : "
"The supply of , and demand for , are
the two factors that will govern the fu
ture trade. The facts are these : The
supply is short , and the demand is un
limited for the best Short Horn cattle ,
either male or female , we can produce.
The conditions are very different from
what they have ever been before. We
ind a universal spirit of improvement
existing among ranchmen , a determination -
ation to breed the best.
"The terrible experience of last win
ter has made range men timorous , and ,
this , with the high prices that have pre
vailed , has encouraged ( shipping to an
unusual extent. As a result hundreds
of range stockmen have reduced their
lerds to the lowest possible point , some
clearing up everything , while others
lave shipped down to their breeding
stock , even sending their yearlings to
market. Many of these shippers are
figuring on buying stock cattle in the
spring to replenish their ranges , argu-
ng that it is safer to sell now and avoid
ill risk of winter loss , and then buy
back in the spring , , even if they have to ,
pay nearly as much as at present for
cattle.
"Again , with all the efforts of the
range shippers to clear , up their herds ,
however , shipments from the west will
fall far behind the movement from the
range last year. This is only another
indication that the greatly discussed
shortage is real , not imaginary. It is
also remarkable that with the high
prices and strong demand so few miock
ers and feeders have been sent to the
country. * '
Continuing , he naid this high tribute
to the stockmen of the west :
'I have never met a class of men
more generous , big hearted and hospit
able. Between myself and many of
these sturdy cattlemen , friendships , sa
cred and true , have been established ,
and I welcome them to my home not
alone for the dollars they bring , but
more for the blessing that touches a ! _
man's heart vhen he meets his fellow !
on the high plane of universal good C .
