With Dr. Coinpton in the coroner's
chair , the thought of death will lose
half its-terrors.
\V. R. Towne had 373 majority , for
judge two years ago. Let's make his
election unanimous this year.
The Republican last week said that
but Miss Brown "has "
no one a right"
to ask for votes for superintendent. If
that assertion is followed to a logical
conclusion it will be found that nobody
has a right to ask for anything that ft
republican wants.
The republican congressional com-
mitteee is attempting to play a confi
dence game on our local carpenters , hay
dealers , painters , etc. , by sending out
circulars announcing that if Kinkaid is
elected to congress Fort Niobrara will
be enlarged and fully garrisoned with
cavalry. This is pretty flimsy , as our
people know that if the republican im
perialistic policy is continued , we will
never havtj enough soldiers at home to
garrison one-half our posts. Don't bite
at the bait , and 3011 won't get caught.
Until two years ago every treasurer
in the state figured his fees on county
and state taxes separately , and nothing
was thought of it. Then a fusionist
state official decided that tin's procedure
was illegal , and stopped it. This is
what Halm's opponents refer to when
they accuse him of having been a party I
to the illegal holding out of fees. If he
was guilty , so was every other treasurer
the state has had. The new ruling was
all that prevented Thackrey from doing
the same thing , through an excusable
misinterpretation of the law.
The cattle shipping season is practic [
ally over , although a few shipments are
yet to be made. The season has been
a good one for sotckmun although ship
ments have been licrht. The range has
been all that could be desired and cattle
came out of the winter in good condi
tion , early took on fat which they held ,
the frquent rains causing little or no
tarvel for water and they steadily in
creased in weights finally finishing out
in excellent shape for range beeAcs.
The market , too , .has been very satisfac
tory , holding fairly firm at good prices.
Take it all in all the cattelman has little
conplaint to file against 1899 and with
another good winter has llattering
prospects for1 the year 1900.

Pete Donoher's experience in the U. (
S. land office , his experience in the ab
stract business , and with the government - 0
ment internal revenue collector , gives s
him exactly the qualifications needed
for a hrstclass county clerk With him
in the office the people of the county
can rest assured that the records Avill
always bekeptstraight ; they will know _
that papers which belong to the local
laud office will not through ignorance
be sent to Georgia or some other out of
the wav place. If Pete Donoher is
clerk , he will not need to be coached
for two years to make him understand
his duties , and as soon as the routine
work becomes familiar he will be able
to impart rather than constantly seek
information. With his knowledge of
the county , its people and history he
will be a credit to his position , and re
store to it some of the prestige it lost
when Pettijohn and Elliott retired. If
Pete is elected it will demonstrate that
ability , not wealth is the qualification
most recognized in this county. If he
is elected it will be a fitting tribute tea
a worthy young Jian , a tribute to one
of our finest characters , and a rebuke
'
to those sinners who are throwing mud
at him. Vote for Donoher for clerk-
In the Republican last \veek was an
article of considerable length , attempt
ing to defend Treasurer Thackrey from
charges emanating from what the editor
of"that i paper is pleased to term "irrej
sponsible sources. " In this article we
find the following , statement :
Another report being circulated is intended -
tended to imply that Treasurer Thack-
rey has kept out of the state treasury
$9000 for six months. The facts are
that he has not had $9,000 of state
money on hand at any one time , nor
has he kept state money on hand six
months at any time.
The Republican deliberately misrepresents -
*
resents the facts , or else Thackrey's
sworn financial statement , and his admission -
mission to us are untrue. In the semiannual -
annual treasurer's statement published
July 21 , we find that on January 1 the
treasurer had on hand § 95.04 , of state I
money , up to June 30 he collected the (
sum of § 5,050.58 in taxes , and S3-
495.08 for rental of school lands. Not
a cent of this money was remitted to
the state treasurer , and the statement
shows that-on June 30 there was on
hand the sum of § 8,641:30 : , or a little
less than $9,000. Not only was this
amount on hand , but it was held by
Thackrey in express violation of law ,
which says the treasurer shall remit
state monies in February and October
of each j'ear , and whenever at other
times the state treasurer cails for it.
Thackrey has a standing order to re
mit every GO days , and in addition to
this the state on May 3 called upon him
for all state funds on hand at that time.
These are the facts and can be proven
by the records , the statutes , and docu
ments in our possession.
We don't know what Thackrey was
doing with the mone } * , and don't care ,
but we do know that the state was
paying interest on outstanding war
rants while this money was idle , to put
the matter softly.
Mrs. Crawford has been president of
one section of the state teachers associu
ation , and has been recognized as one
of the best teachers in the state by be
ing frequentl } ' called upon for papers.
Miss Brown is a real nice little lad } * ,
but from an educational standpoint she
is far inferior to Mrs. Crawford , and
she and all her friends know it. This
is no disgrace to Etta because it is an
