Alex Burr came up from Pullman
Tuesday on business and paid this office
a fraternal call. He has been nomi
nated by the fusionists of Cherry
county .k While Mr. Burr's politics'are
not in accord with those of the Times ,
yet we are free to say that while'a.jeorn -
missioner in this county , we" believe his
official acts were above criticism. Alli

J. J. Harrington , of O'Neill , stopped
off in Bassett last -Friday between
trains. Mr. Harrington will ba the
successor of M. P. Kinkaid as district
judge. He is one of the most success
ful lawyers in prosecuting cattle thieves
and other wrong-doers we have in this
district , and will make as popular a
judge as Westover. Every stockman
should work for his election.
The men who have "been tell ng that
L. 1C. Alder would receive 100 fusion
votes for district judge in this county
will realize what a sad mistake they
liave made on the evening of .Novem
ber 7. No populist or democrat can
afford to vote for other than W. H.
Westover and J. J. Harrington , for
[ udges and no amount of "home pride"
talk and other soft nothings will cause
them to do it. Ainsworth Home Rule.
A letter from Lincoln says the people
of this state should remember that the
joard of regents- should be changed in
order to promote the interests of the
state university. Messrs. Teeters and
Etich are among the very best experi
enced men along educational lines of
any in the state and should be elected
by a large majority. A change , as the
election of these men would bring
about , would he for the best in every
particular.
Last week we forgot to say anything
about the republican convention , be
cause the ticket had really been nom
inated several weeks before. "Like so
many dumb driven cattle. " as Barker
says , the faithful met and ratified the
action of the bosses , joined in the ap
plause when the ringmaster cracked
his whip , and went home. It was a
very nice convention , and "harmony
prevailed , " but oh ! how sick some of
the delegates were after they had
swallowed the dose prepared for them.
The old ship is leaking now. The
instructions sent from headquarters to
republican papers is as follows :
In general it may be stated that an
obviously beneficial policy to pursue is
one that will tend , first , to create dis
satisfaction in the ranks of the fusion
ists and divide their forces ; and , second
end , to strengthen and consolidate the
republican party in the state.
This will explain the tender solici
tude with which republicans tell the
populists that their friends are not
treating them fair , and trv to convince
democrats that the pops are hogging all
the pie. The advice of the Nonconformist
formist follows :
When republican politicians approach
you with such statements just tell them
to mind their their own business and
go to their father , the devil , and a vigor
ous kick added would help them on
their way.
Several parties have asked us why
we didn't say anything about the re
publican rally , so widely advertised
for September 30. There was nothing
to say. Senator Hay ward didn't come ,
neither did Congressman Burkett ,
neither did Moses P. Kinkaid. Alder
and Wood were here , but refused to
make speeches , and the "rally" con
sisted of talks by Towle and Tucker , of
this place. Many republicans were
disgusted at being inveigled into town
to attend a fake meeting , and didn't
hesitate to express their displeasure ,
saying that they believed Hay ward
never intended to come. We think so
too , as the senator was in Washington
at t > e time. This was not the only
fake of the kind , as the speakers failed
to make their dates in Sheridan , Dawes
and Brown counties also. The old ship
is leaking worse than ever.
This is the way the trusts are
formed : The glue trnst went 'through
because the members stuck together.
The leather trust put its sole into the
matter and succeeded. The rubber
men stretched a point anl made an
agreement. The wheel trust went
spiifning to success. The yeast trust
was followed by a rise in prices. The
milk trust took the cream of the busi
ness. The screw men wormed their
way together. The ice trust froze the
outsiders. The gas trust inflated
things to great proportions. The starch
trust stiffened prices. The paint trust
painted things red. The oyster trust
proved to be "no shell game. The ele
vator tyust sent things up and down in
a * lively manner. The wringer trust
put a squeezer on the little fellows.
The saw trust ripped things open. The
crockery trust smashed prices. The
fertilizer trust caused a stir in the
neighborhood. And the window glass
trust let in the light on many dark
things. Ex.

The stockmen of Argentine are breed
ing up their herds with the best bulls ,
tmd their influence on the markets will
soon be forcibly felt.
There probably never has been a
year when the buyers of feeding cattle
were exercising greater discrimination
in supplying their needs for the field
lot than at present. Animals that are
well grown for their age , and that show
evidences of a good proportion of the
blood of one of the leading beef breeds ,
Qnd a ready market at good prices.
The steer that seems undersized , for
his age , indicating that it has been
stunted in calfhood , and those having
no evidence of beef blood , are touched
very lightly and at a large discount
when they find purchasers at all.
