are working hard for his election , with
every prospect of success.
Tor County 'Superintendent
Mrs. Lizzie Crawford
"The child is father of the man , " the
old adige : says , and it is equally true
that the school moulds the character of
the child ; hence it'we have good schools
we will have good citizens. But if we
want , good schools wu must have goo-j
teachers , and beiore we can nave goou
teachers we must have a good superin
tendent. It's the old story of one bau
apple broiling a barrel lull. Our ideal
superintendent is about like this : A
teacher lm > t , wjth the best of educa
tion ; one who can teach the educated ,
and the ignorant ; one who can associ
ate with the wealthiest and most cul
tured , and is not asaamed to be seen in
the haunts of the lowly ; one whom the
children love and their elders admire
ana respect : a Christian ana one who
loves the worli ; a good organizer anil
posseted 01 common sense and plenty
ot business experience. Given sucii a
superintendent , the schools of any com
munity are bound to llouri&li , and that
is exactly the kind tne iusiouista oi this
county proposed to give our peopie
wiieu they tendered Mrs. Lizzie Craw-
lord the nomination on their ticket. ,
Mrs. Crawiord has been a resident ol
northwest .Nebraska lor 10 years , and
came to Valentine iroiii Atkinson over
6 years ago , during waicu nine bhe Lat >
iveu coiisuiiiuy increasing satisiactiou
as leacuer lu our priuniry school , tse-
iore coining Here sue attended tiie io\\a
state JNoriuai , and had just graduated
Iroin the Western JNorniai. Parker's
fccnool ol Methods at Chicago knew her
as a pupil , and so have other institu
tions , during vacations , lu addition to
this , she taugat a , dozen terms in Hoit
county , and thus knows the needs of a
country school. Mrs. Crawford is a
Ireu silver republican in politics , and it
she had not so thoroughly understood
the money question , would have been
the republican nominee last fall.
For County Judge
JudgeW.
W. R. Towne
It seems almost useless lo speak of
our candidate for judge , he is so well
known and respected , but we must not
slight the veterans. Uncle Dick cele
brated his 65th birthday , Tuesday , and
he seems to be as hale and hearty now
.ts he was ten years ago. A pioneer in
Cherry count % > and always a democrat ,
if has hundreds of iriends who will be
lad to have the opportunity cf voting
iur him once more. During his three
$ ears1 incumbency of the bench in this
county , he has known neither friend
nor lee in the discharge of his duty , but
has meted out justice to all alike , ac
cording to the best of his ability. Wt
believe he will be elected by 300 ma-
ority , at least.
for County Surveyor
J. S. Estabrook
1 ? or surveyor we once more present
the name of J. S. Estabrook for the
consideration of our readers and the
voters generally. Since his election
two years ago , Estabrook has done
a great deal of work , and is now more
qualified than ever to fill the office he
seeks. Many corners which had been
lost have been located by him , a ad he
has alwaj s done his work faithfully and
conscientiously.
For Comity Coroner/
Dr. A. N. Compton
It is the habit of many people to
smile when one speaks of a man run
ning for the office of coroner , but it is
not a smiling matter. Upon the action ,
or verdict of the coroner some day may
depend the happiness , the liberty , aye ,
even the life of yourself or one you hold
dear , and in other instances I e is called
upon to flll the sheriff's office , as was.
done here three years ago. Realizing
this , the fusionists selected a man of
strict probity of character for that of
fice Dr. A. > . Compton. '
For County Commissioner , Second District
Alex J3uiT !
The people of the second commis
sioner district will be called upon this ,
fall to elect a commissioner , and for
that office the name of Alexander Ijurr (
of Buffalo Lake is presented. Alex }
rebresents a portion ol the county little i
known in politics , but after election it '
is safe to say it will be represented in ,
our county government , and by an able i
man , too. Alex 13urr ts an old resident '
of the countv , and everybody concedes
that as commissioner he will bea second - ,
end Sullivan. Everybody knows what
that means , a id his election is devoutly ;
lo be wished. - ,

The colt feeding experiments now in
progress at the Iowa agricultural ex
periment station , says The Breeder's
Gazette , promise to show some interest
ing results. One lot of four weanlings
is receiving skimmilk as a distinctive
feature of the ration. The rest of the
ration consists of clover hay , cut fodder
der , roots and a grain mixture of oats ,
bran and oilmeal. Another lot of the
same age and number is receiving this
ration without the skimmilk. It is
thought that the skimmilk is favorable
to growth. This trial should be of some
interest in determining whether this is
no or not. It is generally thought that
it is advisable to grind grain for wean
ling colts. That station is testing this
point by actual experiment. Four wean
lings are being fed a grain ration con
sisting of six parts ground oats , three
parts bran and one part oilmeal by j
weight , with clover hay , corn fodder i
and roots in addition , while another lot
of the same number and age is receiv
ing the same ration , excepting that the
oats are fed unground. It would seem
that the ground ration would be spe
cially relished by the colts when their
teeth are changing , but it is a point yet
to be determined whether or not it will
pay to grind the grain at all times.
A Sign of Stability.
"I am going into the sheep business
to stay. I like it , it suits my farm , and
I made a bad mistake when I let low
prices drive me out. Next time I will
stay with the sheep if they go down to
where their wool catches fire , for they
\vill come up again. " This is the senti
ment of one more who has experiment
ed to his satisfaction in various lines
because that for which he and his equip
ment -were suited didn't pay. He found
more than one thing that doesn't pay
sometimes. There are many like him
who are now getting back into the
business they dropped for something
else that looked better. It is a hopeful
sign. It means a more stable produc
tion , less wholesale "flopping" from
one thing to another and fewer over
stocked markets. We must expect tips
and downs in all industries , but we
may hope for fewer extremes in the
various lines of agricultural and live
stock production in the next ten years
than in the past. National Stockman.
Western Cattle.
There is said to be a growing scarcity
of cattle throughout the west. Many
farmers yet rely upon buying feeders
instead of breeding them on the farm ,
and much feed is wasted on inferior
feeders. We cannot have a full supply
of cattle until the farmers raise their
own cattle to feed and fatten. Our
home demand is growing with the in
creased prosperity , which must reduce
the export shipments until our farmers
renew their breeding to full capacity
and by securing pure bred bulls get the
full supply of high grade cattle for the
market.

PROFESSIONAL VISIT TO THIS CITY
OF DR. W. I. SEYMOUR.
Many Years of Success In the Correct
Adaption of Lenses to All Forms
of Impaired Si lit.
Dr. Seymour brings with him the
most complete line of scientific instru
ments for thoroughly diagnosing and
correcting all known errors of refrac
tion that haw ever been collected by
one man in his profession. Many of
these instruments have been especially
constructed for his particular use by
the most prominent manufacturing op
ticians in Paris.
Do not be discouraged because you
have hitherto been unable to find the
assistance in glasses that your friends
do. True , you may have spent many
dollars and much time in search of per
fect sight and comfort , but science has
not been idle in this branch of work
any more than in other professions of
perhaps less importance. A master of
his profession and aided by every in
strument known to science for hia
work , Dr. Seymour is in a position sel
dom equaled by the most proficient
men in his line , and certainly never
surpassed.
