' NOMINATE TWO JUDGES Democrats and Populists Hold Their Con' vcntions and Name Winners Pursuant to call the democrats of the loth judicial district met here last Saturday , Sept. 2 , and at ten o'clock were called to order by Robert Good. The convention then elected Judge Crites temporary chairman and Robert Good secretary , after which the following committees were appointed : Credentials Murphj' , Blewett and Harmon. Permanent organization Sullivan , Johnson and Patterson. A short recess was then taken and the committee on credentials report ed that all counties in the district were represented but Keya Paha and Rock , giving the convention 49 votes. Next the temporary organization was made permanent and , these gentlemen appointed to draw up resolutions : Smyser , Sullivan and Patterson A resolution by Smj-ser was then offered and adopted , as follows : "Resolved , that the secretary pro ceed to cail the roll of the counties in this judicial district and that as each county is called the chairman of the delegation representing such county cast the vote for two candidates for district judge and that such balloting proceed until two persons have each received a majority of the votes cast and thereupon a committee of three be appointed by the chair to wait up on the populist convention and re quest concurrence of that body in such nominations. " The convention then proceeded to ballot , with the following result Westover 45 , Crites 32 , Harrington 12 , Tingle 0. Uner the resolution adopted the following committee was appointed , and an adjournment taken to 1 o'clock : Towne of Cherry , Ward- law of Dawes , Murphy of Brown. On reassembling the convention re ceived word that the populist conven tion was ready for business and would like to hear from the democrats , and after a motion to increase the num ber to four had been lost , the commit tee last named proceeded to perform its duty , and returned shortly with the report that the populists had re fused to accept the fiat of the demo crats3 but had appointed a conference committee and had nominated West over by acclamation. After consid erable sparring on motion of Smyser a committee on conference to arrange for nominations was named bv the chair , as follows : Smyser of Box Butte , Wardlaw of Dawes and Fallen of Holt. On motion of Good , after a little discussion , the rules Avere sus pended and W. H. Westover nominat ed by acclamation , and this was fol lowed by a recess. After the recess the conference committee reported that it had fail ed to agree with , the populists in any particular , whereupod the committee was instructed to report that the democrats would agree to nominate any man who could receive a majori ty of the votes of each convention. This was agreed to and balloting pro ceeded with , resulting as below : Crites 37 34 34 12 7 49 18 Harrington. . . . 12 15 15 20 lll/2 20 Patterson 49 11 iyz Harmon G 7 49 Snijser G lingle 11 Meanwhile the populist vote kept being reported Harrington 40 , scat tering 6 , excepting on the second bal lot , when Harrington had 46. After the ninth ballot , Fallen of Holt mov ed to go into joint convention , which motion was carried by a vote 28 to 21. This practically settled the matter and the democrats proceeded to the hall of the populists , where Judge Crites was made chairman of the joint convention. The first ballot re sulted : Harrington 55 , Crites 29 , Tin gle 11. The democrats of Holt and Sioux voted for Harrington , and those of Boyd for Tingle , as did the pops from that county. The democrats then returned to fheir hall and nominated J. J. Har rington by acclamation. Wm. Fallen of O'Neill was made chairman of the judicial committee , and M. M. Sullivan secretary.
