VtORD ABOUT FUSION IN THIS COUNTY Three popocratic conventions in which the people of this county are interested have been held , and nominations have been made , and democrats are wondering what benefjjj they have derived from them. The first was the congressional convention at Lexington , when if any spirit of fairness had been shown the democrats should have been al lowed to name the candidate and received the populist endorsement. Next came the state convention , when the populists controlled the machinery of the conventions , and nominated a man who was to say the least very distasteful to democracy. And then in the face of this the Fifteenth judicial district conventions held here last Saturday ab solutely refused to recognize the ? rights of democracy and nominated two populists for the judgeships. This is a bald statement of , the facts in the case , and if taken alone , miglnVDe very prejudicial to the interests f > f the candidates nominated , but there are extenuating cir cumstances , and these we hope will be considered by democrats ere they cast their ballots. It is merely a question of whether we think of fusion only as (1) ( ) a means of obtaining victory for office , or whether we look upon it as (2) ( ) a means of obtaining victory for principle , or , which is about the same , (3) ( ) a means of defeating an absolutely wrong principle. If \ve regard it in the light of the first propositisri , we certainly lose sight of the fundamental principles of democracy , and beoome nothing but politiciaus of the baser sort. If we . .consider the mattev in the light of the second proposition , we certainly cannot object to the name by which a man 'designates his political belief , if he can conscientioasly and will endor.se our p-ineiples as laid down in our platforms. And even if we look upon fusion from the third standpoint we are forced to admit that it is a good thing. Arguing thence we see nothing for democrats to do but support the fusion ticket , though -tne names of but few partisan democrats appear thereon. It may seem toughn to those who have come to regard the name "democrat" with affection but the perpetuation of that name depends upon success , and success in this portion of the state'at least depends upon fusion. There is no use denying the fact that many of the democrats in this county are not entertaining the be3t of feelings toward populism on account af the facts set forth in the first-paragraph of this article , and we hope that our populist'friends will take warning therefrom and curb their more radical notions when the local conventions are held. The hope of republicans , whose ideas of government we think are radically wrong , lies in creating dissensions among the members of the fusion parties , and the only way we can guard against this is by having mutual forbearance. In a political family constituted as ours is , there is bound to be some dissatisfaction over the disposition of favors , and it won't do for one braijgli of the. family to .biscome excessive in its demands upon the other. The hardest fight in the United States , where purely national questions are involved , will be made in this congressional district this fall. Bryan is a shining mark. Every time Bryan turns around to blow his nose the hannacrats claim he has turned his back upon free silver. He made a speech in Iowa recently and failed to use the expression " 16 to 1" and the mul let heads have been having fits ever since. John IVEuchgall Thurston remained quietly in obscurity while the contributions for the First .Nebraska's special train were pouring in but he managed to get his private car attached to the first section as it was coming home -with the boys. This was patriotism. It is quite common for republicans to make fun of popocrats and say they are igdorant , but it remained for a republican lawyer during Saturday's love feast to admonish his part7 to be careful in selecting its candidate for the "supreme court of the United States. ' ' I the imperialist candidate for congress makes a speech here * ho will do well to avoid remarks about sending more soldiers to whip the Filipinos. The farmers of this county and the merchants of this vil lage realize very forcibly what ife means to have the soldier boys' away- from home , and if you touch a man's pocket book you touch him with a very forcible touch. The New York Journal sent a special reporter to Nebraska two or three weeks ago for the special purposeof interviewing William Jennings Bryan , and through a typographical error Bryan's wealth was made out to be $250,000 instead of S25COO. The error was cor rected in the next issue of the paper , but nevertheless the administra tion organs all over the couhtiy have ever since been denouncing our leader as a prospective plutocrat , and asking how.he made his moner in so short a time. Says the Nebraska State Journal : "The military establishment maintained by Uncle Sam just now is a pretty expensive aifair , for a fact , but * * nobody is going to be mean enough to suggest that the soldiers should have inferior travel accommodations and rations , and IN NO OTHER WAY DOES IT SEEM POSSIBLE to make much of a reduc tion in the expense. " This paper would suggect that the army might be brought home , reduced in size , or at least not increased , if the State Journal really desires a solution of the problem. The Commissioner of Public Lands and Buildings will offer about 4,200 acres of school land for lease at public auction at Thedford at the office of the county treasurer , beginning at 9 a. m. Sept. 25,1899 , under the following pro vision of the new school land law : . If after using due diligence to lease said laud , at an annual rental of six serpent upon the ap praised valuation , the Commissioner is unable to do so , he may offer the same for lease : t less than the appraised valuation and leose it to the oerspn or parsons who will pay six per cent on the highest offered valuation , as annual rental , if in his judgment It is to the best interest of the state to accept such bid. Persons desiring to examine lands to be leased may secure lists of the same , showing present appraisement thereof , as well as any other information , upon application to the county treasurer or by addressing the commissioner at Lin coln. At the beginning of the auction the Commissioner will gladly answer all inquiries in regard to the school land business or the workings of the new law The list of lands referred to will be found on .page fivs of this paper The Commissioner will hold a similar auction in Sheridan county , at Rush- ville.
