urday , by Judge Towne , to Sam C.
Gordon and Grace Swain , both of

A large bell has been placed in the
belfry of the M. E. church and now
sounds the tocsin of Him who leads to
this place of worship.
Watermelons are now on the local
market and the doctors aremaking
calculations on doing a land office
business for awhile at least.
Wm. Francke and Roy Ludwig
made a fishing trip to the Boardman
last week , but had poor luck if their
faces were any indication of success.
The fats and leans played a match
ed game of ball on the grounds south
of the track yesterdaywhich icsulted
in a score of 15 to 1 in favor of the
leans.
The dance at Cornell's Hall Friday
night was enthusiastically attended
and quite a sum of money raised , for
the sufferers from the fire fiend and

Miss E"mily MdClean lectured at the
M. E. church last Frida } ' night to a
fair sized audience , and those who
had the pleasure of hearing hef , pro
nounce her an elocutionist of no small
repute.

Ernest Sears met with a fatal acci
dent Tuesday , a horse kicking him-in
the abdomen. He suffered terrible
agony and before medical assistance
arrived was a corpse. This is sad , in
deed , and our sympathy goes put to
the bereaved family.

The Indians were numerous in town
tlds week to receive new wagons and
other allotments to which they were
entitled. - <
New recruits are arriving almost
daily at Fort Niobrara and the post
now has in the neighborhood of 200
soldiers , which will be increased
steadily.
C. W. Bennett came in from Simeon
again Tuesday to receive medical
treatment. He has been indisposed
for some time , but claims to be on
the mend. His wife accompanied
him.

J. P. Gardner , of Cody , was in town
Friday , and called to inform us that
he recovered several head of horses
through the NEWS-DEMOCRAT , which
he pronounced the best stock medium
in the west.
The Masons sold their stoclc ranch
in southwestern Cherry county to the
Stansbie boys and will locate in Brown
county. This gives the Stansbies as
fine a ranch , wich their own , as can
be found in the country.
If the school board intends to rep
resent the people of Valentine they
will now re-engage Miss Shaughnesy
as one of our teachers. Why was she
deposed anyway , is a question the
people are asking themselves ?
The Greater America Exposition
opens Saturday , July 1st , ' 99. The
Greater America will be a hummer-
you will say so when 3Tou see it.
Special rates on all railroads ; grand
parade ; magnificent fireworks.
Mr. Wilheit and wife took the train
for Gordon and other points west Sun
day night. Mr. Wilheit is looking for
a good business opening and expressed
himself very favorably in regard to
Valentine and may return.
The people of Crookston request us
to announce that they have decided
to not celebrate the 4th at that place
this year , but that the M. W. of A.
lodge Avill give a dance at their hall
July 14 , to which all are invited.
D. Stinard vs. C. V. Thorn , account ,
was the title of a suit before Judge
Towne last Thursday , and after
hearing the evidence on both sides
his honor rendered judgment in favor
of plaintiff for the amount asked.
First colonial exposition of Greater
America opens at Omv.ha Saturday ,
July 1 , 1899. Splendid music ; good
speakers ; grand civic and military
parade ; magnificent fife works in
evening. Don't miss opening day.
Attorney Morrissey was up the
road several days the past week , be
ing called as counsel in an impor
tant legal contest. Mr. Morrissey is
fast being looked upon as the leading
attorney of Northwestern Nebraska.
The Harnan Bros. , Gillespie pre
cinct , have disposed of their ranch
and removed to Rock county where
they will continue in the stock busi
ness on an extensive scale. We are
sorry to lose these people from onr
midst.
Johnny Stetter returned Sifriday
from his trip to Omaha unlike his
friends expected to see him. Instead
of having his face all beat up and dis
figured as per fake account in Omaha
Bee , he was looking bright , and minus
z. single scratch. He just laughed at
the report as a huge1 ioke.
W. E. Haley is one of the busiest
men in tdwn these days answering in
quiries regarding Cherry County real
estate. Watch for an influx of emi
gration in the near future. Our low
taxes and financial standing as a
county is an item always foremost
with those having capital to invest.
'A pound of gold may be made into
a wire that would extend around the
globe. So one good deed may be felt
through all time and cast its influence
into eternity. Though done in the
first flush of youth , it may gild the
last of a long life and form the bright
est and most glorious spot in it , "
Rev. D. W , C , Huntington , D.D. ,
chancellor of the Nebraska Wesleyan
University , will preach in the M , E.
Church next Sunday moaning and
evening. The ddCtof is a fine speaker
and it will be a treat to hear him.

signed up the following verdict r ' 'At
an inquest holdeii at Fort Niobrar'a ,
in Cherry county , ori the 20th day of
Junej 1899 , before me , Alff ed Lewis ,
coroner of said county , upon the body
of Thomas J. Wiggins , lying dead by
the jurors whose names are hereto
subscribed. The said jurors upon
their oath do say that the said Thos.
J. Wiggins came by his death on June
26,1899 , from cerebal apoplexy.

The Epworth League will celebrate
the glorious Fourth by giving a picnic
on the Minnechaduza to which all are
invited. Transportation will be fur

The 4th of July will be celebrated
at Britt this year. Good speakers
will be in attendance. Speaking and
other exercises will be carried out in
the forenoon. In the afternoon there
will be horse racing , foot racingbase
ball. A liberal purse has been raised
for winners in all games and races.
All are invited to come and enjoy
themselves. A large bowery will
giye all a chance to tip the light fan
tastic. Refreshment stands will irri
gate the dry and feed the hungry.

in the school house of Valentine Mon
day night and resulted in the election
of W. E. Haley and P. S. Simons as
members of the school board. The
annual report showed moneys receiv
ed for the year as follows :

On motion another , or twelfth
