ill this week with inflaination of the

not build a residence this summer.
J. A. Hornback is working on his
farm 15 miles cast of here , and spends

about two acres of onions this year.

Geo. Ross will sell his livery stable
outfit , horses , harness , buggies , frame
bain , etc , at public auction on Satur

Wm. Ferdon and wife are in town
from their ranch , the Box T , near
Brownlee. Mr. Ferdon says the sand
hills beat the world for stock , and if
doesn't succeed it is his own and not
the country's fault.
The boss of this ranch is on a deal
for a broncho and if it goes through
he intends going out on a roundup for
strays who haven't had their subscrip
tion receipts branded for some time
past. Financially the boss is almost
a busted community , and he has got
to raise the wind somehow or other.
Dr. C. R. Jackson has sold his dent
al practice to Drs. Wells , and is now
in Omaha looking for a location. Dr.
Jackson's going was a surprise to our
people , as he had built up a good bus
iness in his profession and had made
many friends who will hope to hear
of his success in other fields.
L. Fisher , wife and daughter , of In
terior , S. D. , were in town Monday ,
called by a telegram saying that a
son of Mr. Fisher who was taking
treatment at the hospital was not ex
pected to live. On their arrival here
they found the young man much im
proved in health and he accompanied
them as far as Claymore's on their
way home.

This is no closing out of odds and ends
and ends , but a sale of bright , new

The hop given bv the ladies of Val
entine last Friday evening was a dis
tinct success , about thirty couples be
ing present. The music for the oc
casion was furnished by the Chadron
orchestra , and refreshments were
furnished by the ladies themselves.
Among those present from abroad
were Mesdames Robinson and Bates
and Pearl Ray of Chadron , Mattie
Carlisle of Rosebud and Leona Baum-
gartel of Crooks ton.
This month has been a iccord
breaker at the land office in the way
of homestead entries , sixty-five hav
ing been made up to date. This is
more than have been made any
month in about twelve years , or since
the Chadron office was organized and
is a whole volume of testimony to the
value of north Nebraska lands. One
noteworthy feature of this phenome
nal month is the fact that fully two-
thirds of the entries have been for
Cherry county land.
A. D.Lewis formerly of this county ,
now engaged in general mercantile
business at Brownlee , Cherry county ,
was doing business and renewing old
acquaintances in Keya Paha county t
several days this week. r
J. F. Swain has purchased a farm
on the Niobrara river near Fort Nio
brara and will move to the same in
the near future. He exhibited at
this office a sample of rre grown on
the place last year that measured
eight feet. Springview Herald.
At its meeting Monday night the
school board decided to add one year
to the school course , making it twelve
years , and also decided to employ an P
assistant principal next year. This li
is rendered necessary l > y the large lisi
number of pupils in the high school ,
and the revenue derived under the
new high school law is expected to al
most , if not entirely , pay the new ir
teacher. It is estimated that the irol
high school will have 50 to oo pupils olw
next term , and the revenue from non m
residents will amount to about $40 st
per month.
