General Lewis' Case.
HON. JAMES LEWIS , BUnVETOH GENERAL OP
LOUISIANA.
Pe-ru-na Drug Mfg. Co. , Columbus , O. :
Gentlemen I have used Pe-ru-na for
a short time and can cheerfully recom
mend it as being all you represent , and
wish every man who is suffering with
catarrh could know of its great value.
Should I at any future time have occa
sion to recommend a treatment of your
kind , rest assured that yours will be
the one. Gratefully yours ,
JAMBS LEWIS.
AVherever the catarrh is there is sure
to be a waste of mucus. The mucus is
as precious as blood. It is blood , in
fact. It is blood plasma blood with
the corpuscles removed. To stop this
waste , you must stop this catarrh. A
course of treatment with Pe-ru-ua
never fails to do this.

A RELIC OF ST. PAUL.
Fragment of the Synagogue in Which
the Apoatle "Reasoned. "
Ilad anybody foretold , when we be
gan excavating at Corinth in 1890 , in
absolute ignorance of the location of
one single object mentioned in the de
scription of Pausauias , that at the end
of the first campaign we should-have
the theater , and at the end of the second
end , Pireue , I should have said that it
was too good to be true. In excavatlo ,
as in fishing , luck plays a great role. As
all the archaeologists in Athens are fe
licitating the American School on its
luck , we may as well rejoice openly. I
would rather be the discover of Pirene
than "take Quebec. " . . .
To most people the name "Corinth"
does not conjure up a picture of its an
cient and honorable history from the
time when it founded Syracuse and
Corcyra until it was destroyed by the
Romans ; it is rather the place made sa
cred by the residence and loving labors
of St. Paul.
In our first year's work , while exca
vating a house evidently of the Roman
period , we had sportively called it the
house of "Sosthenes , the brother , " little
expecting that we should ever come up
on anything which we could attach to
the great apostle except by the slender
est cord of fancy. Accordingly , it was
rather startling to find , on turning over
a block of marble found at a depth of
about ten feet , an inscription of Roman
times , rudely cut and broken at both
ends , running , "synagogue of the He
brews. " The thought arose , and would
not down , that this stone was a part of
the very synagogue in which Paul
"reasoned . . . every Sabbath , and
persuaded the Jews and the Greeks , "
when "he continued there a year and
six months , teaching the word of God
among them. "
The block was elaborately carved on
one side with a row of dentils and
higher bands of moldings both above
and below it , and had undoubtedly
formed a part of a fine entablature of a
building in the older city destroyed by
Mummius ; but in the synagogue it had
been used as the lintel of a door. Its
show side , with the elaborate carving ,
had been turned downwards , so that it
could be seen by looking up as one
passed through the door , while the in
scription was cut in the edge now
brought to the front , which , being
plain , was well fitted for the purpose.
Vve have not been able to identify
any of the walls found near by with
the synagogue from which the block
came , although we may subsequently
give it such a setting ; nor can we say
with certainty that the inscription is
not later than the time of Paul. But
the probability is the other way , and it
is at least not unlikely that he passed
and repassed under this very block.
We could hardly have found anything
more closely associated with him.

Meist Temperate Nation.
The Greeks were perhaps the most
temperate of the ancient nations. True ,
they had their wiue , but it was of a
mild character , containing but little al

the addition of water , and to drink it
otherwise they deemed would be the
act of a barbarian. In short , the Greek
drank for exhilaration , and never al
lowed his cups to carry him beyond it.

PAINFUL PERIODS NO
. GEORGE OSMUN , of Belvidere , Warren Co. , N. J. . writes :
MRS. 44 Suffering as I had from weakness , irregularities and backache
for several years , a release from this suffering was a blessing. Oh !
bow I wish more suffering women would accept your kind offer and be relieved.
There is no need for women to suffer. Mrs. Pinkham's advice and Lydia E.
Pinkham's Vegetable Compound will relieve
them/ '
MRS. IDA PETERS , Milan , Tenn. , writes :
" DEAR MRS. PrNKHAM When I wrote to you
the first time asking your advice I was a great
sufferer. Menstruations were irregular , some
times a week too soon and then a week or two
late , and when they appeared were very profuse ;
great pain and tenderness in the bowels , pain in
back and limbs , leucorrhoea all the time. I
was weak and nervous and had no appetite.
Burning and choking sensation in my throat.
I received your reply and followed all your
instructions and now I am cured. I owe my
' recovery all to Mrs. Pinkham's advice and her
wonderful remedies. "
ELLA E. BRENNER , East Rochester ,
Ohio , writes :
"I have been thankful a thousand times
since I wrote to you for what your Vegeta
ble Compound has done for me. I followed
your advice carefully and now I feel like a
different person. My troubles were back
ache , headache , nervous tired feeling , pain
ful menstruation and leucorrhoea. I took
four bottles of Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegeta
ble Compound , one box of Pills , one package
of Sanative Wash and am now well. "
MRS. MAGGIE P. STINE. New Berlin ,
Pa. , writes :
" I have suffered with terrible backache
in the small of my back for about seven
years , and could never get any thing to help
me. I tried sereral physicians , but found
'no help. I have now taken three bottles
of Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound -
pound , and feel like a different woman. "
MRSHAias. Cedar Street , Owosso , Mich. , writes :
" Nearly three years ago I wrote to you asking advice in regard to my health.
I was so miserable ; suffered from painful menstruation and backache , was
nervous , dizzy and faint. I received such a kind letter from you , telling me
just what to do. I followed your advice and I now am recommending Lydia E.
Pinkham's Vegetable Compound. I thank God for this pain destroyer. "
CHILDREN AT TABLE ,
The Idiot and the Pedajjog Compare
Notes on Training.
John Keudrick Bangs advances some
original ideas on home discipline in the
Woman's Home Companion while de
scribing a successful dinner party
given by "The Idiot. "
"Most certainly , " said the School
master , "I certainly do approve of hav
ing children at table on all occasions.
How else are they to learn how to con
duct themselves ? The discipline of the
nursery is apt to be lax , and it is my
belief that many of the bad table man
ners of the present-day child are due
to the sense of freedom which eating
in the nursery naturally inculcates. " ,
"There is something in what you
say , " said the Idiot. "Tommy , for in
stance , never learned to throw a
French pancake across the table at his
sister by watching his mother and my
self here in the dining-room , yet in the
freedom of the nursery I have known
it done. "
"Precisely , " said Mr. Pedagog. "That
very little incident illustrates my point
exactly. And I have no doubt that in
the nursery the offense seemed less
heinous than it would had it occurred
in the dining-room , and hence did not
meet with the full measure of punish
ment that it deserved. "
"Well , " said the Idiot , reflectively ,
"I quite agree with your proposition
that children should dine in the dining-
room with their parents , and not up
stairs in the nursery with a lot of tin
soldiers and golliwogs. And as for the
stern father who says his children
must dine in the kitchen until they
learn better manners I never had much
confidence in him or in his manners ,
either. "

Dagger , E. L. Stetson , of Buena Vista
County , Iowa , report as follows of the
Canadian North-west as to its suitability
for farming , and the advantages it of
fers to the agricultural immigrant from
the United States : "We came here sole
ly to look up improved farms and , if
suitable , to select such as pleased us
best. We have not visited the home
stead districts at all , though we believe
them to be very inviting. Our inquiries
have been confined solely to the district
around Hartney , Deloraine and towards
the Souris river in Manitoba. Our im
pressions of all that region are in every
way satisfactory , and we have decided
to go back to Iowa at once , and , having
disposed of our several interests there ,
to return to Manitoba in the month of
March next , and , effecting our purchase
of fmproved farms , which we find we
can do at reasonable rates , immediately
begin farming. We are greatly pleased
with all that we have seen in that part
of Western Canada. The soil we find
to be more than equal to that of our
own country for wheat growing , and
the other conditions of climate , schools ,
marmots , etc. , are all that we could wish
for.
for."To
"To show what an energetic man can
do we may mention that we found one
such at Hartney who had rented a farm
on shares , receiving two-thirds of the
returns as his share of the crop. When
he came to sell his own produce he
found that his two- thirds , when con
verted into cash , was enough to buy the
farm he rented out and out , which he
accordingly did , and is now its owner.
It is our intention to induce as many
of our friends as possible , who are prac
tical farmers , to remove from Iowa to
this country , where we believe there is
a better future for the industrious man
than is now to be found anywhere on
this continent. We are well known in
our part of the State of Iowa , and we
invite correspondence from its residents j
in all parts with regard to this region
of Western Canada which we have vis
ited , and to which we intend to return. "

Food does not taste good , and
the digestion is poor ; the skin

sleep brings no rest and work

What is the cause of all this ?
Impure blood.
And the remedy ?
It clears out the channels
