And How He Won the Name of "The
Carthaginian of JIuinc. "
Among the many stories of Hamliu's
early experiences in the Maine Legisla
ture none is more animated than his
tilt with John Holmes , interesting , be
sides , because it gives the origin of
"The Carthaginian of Maine , " a name
that stuck to Ilamlin through life.
Holmes had been in the United States
Senate , and at this particular time
writes General Hamlin , a member of
the State House of Representatives
was endeavoring to domineer over it.
"Hamliu disputed the leadership with
him , and Holmes attempted to crush
his young opponent by coarsely ridicul
ing his swarthy complexion. Instantly
Hamlin jumped to his feet , and point
ing his linger at Holmes retorted : 'If
the gentleman chooses to find fault
with me for my complexion , what Uas
lie to say about himself ? I take my
complexion from nature ; he gets his
from the brandy bottle. Which is
more honorable ? ' " This retort was
greeted with great applause and cries
of "Go on ! " Hamlin then continued
pointing his finger at Holmes : "I will
also tell the member from Alfred that
lie is more conspicuous for trying to
run dry shod over young men than for
trying to encourage them. * * *
But as long as they are true to them
selves and to nature , and as long as
the member from Alfred sticks to the
brandy bottle , they need not fear him. "
As soon as the cheers of the House
could -be sufficiently silenced , Holmes
retracted his words and made a manly
apology. "The young Carthaginian
routed the old Roman , " was one hu
morous comment on the incident , and
from that time Hamlin was thus fre
quently characterized.

"Wall Paper and Diseases.
"Dr. Chamel of Cornell University , "
observes the Kansas City Times in an
editorial article March 8 , "has made an
announcement which is calculated to
cause a slump in the market for stock
of the wall paper trust. The doctor says
that he has made chemical analysis of
a large number of samples of wall pa
per , and in nearly all of them has found
arsenical poisons , in some of them the
poison existing in surprising quantities.
He was led to make the investigation
by having brought to his attention a
number of cases of sickness which were
traced to paper covered rooms. It is to
be presumed that , in the future , houses ,
in order to be classed as 'strictly mod
ern , ' will have to have frescoed walls.
"While on the subject of wall paper ,
the Cornell scientist would confer a
favor upon mankind by pursuing his
investigation further. It would be in
teresting as well as instructive to know
what per cent of the inmates of insane
asylums owe their mental condition to
their having been compelled to live in
rooms whose walls were covered with
realistic portraitures of an opium smok
er's dream. Some of the designs which
are alleged to make living rooms cozy
and homelike resemble nothing so mucli
as the efforts of a dissipated artist to
reproduce the experiences of an attack
of the delirium tremens. "
Alabastiue , the rock-base cement for
coating walls , is free from these objec
tions. It is sanitary and costs less than
wall paper.

'EALTH and beauty are the glories of perfect woman-
hood.
Women who suffer constantly with weakness peculiar
to their sex cannot retain their beauty. Preservation of
pretty features and rounded form is
a duty women owe to themselves.
The mark of excessive monthly suf-

during my menstrual periods for ten years. My nervous sys

had almost every ill human flesh is

Art in Which Few Excel.
Dinner giving , very sensibly says a
writer in Wliat to Eat , is an art in
which few excel. It is easy enough to
select a number of dishes from a cook
ery book , and have them prepared in a
more or less appetizing manner by
one's cook , or to order a dinner com
plete in all its details from some ca
terer ; but to make each guest feel that
he has dined Avell without giving him
the conviction that lie has dined heart
ily is a feat not often accomplished ,
even by the most particular hostess.
The American entertainer is prone to
excess in the quantity which he offers
to his guests. He does this out of a
mistaken idea of hospitaltly ! , not from
any fear of being called mean if he
should give only a small repast.
As a rule , a dinner should consist of
not more than five or six chief courses
that is , soup , fish , entree , roast and
vegetables , each one served separately ,
followed by an entrement of some sort ,
and fruit. This is considered quite suf
ficient by European entertainers , who
seldom give more than that , and whose
guests would be shocked to see four or
five vegetables on the table at the same
time. With the entree are often served
two vegetables ; but the chief dish of
that kind always comes on as a sep
arate course , either just before or after
the roast.
Don't Be So Wasteful.
Don't use tablecloths or napkins to
wipe the dishes with.
Don't let the ashes choke up your
grate and burn it out.
Don't keep a big fire in the range
when there is no need for it.
Don't let bread grow must ; T use it
up , before it is past using , in puddings ,
bread , cakes , etc.
Don't dig with one side of your broom
until it looks freakish , nor use your
best broom for scrubbing.
Don't let the cheese mold use it up
in preparing cooked dishes if it can not
be eaten plain while fresh.
Don't kill yourself rubbing on the
washboard when a little washing pow
der or kerosene will help you so willing
ly.
ly.Don't
Don't throw out a bag of stale , soft
crackers ; put them in a big shallow
pan and let them get crisp again in a
moderate oven.
Don't put your clothes on the line on
a freezing day and leave them at the
mercy of the winds one minute longer
than is necessary.
Don't trust too much to servants to
take the proper care of eatables , and of
the working utensils ; a constant super
vision of the housewife will not re
quire much care if it is systematic , and
it will pay well in the end.
ITor Spring1 Fever.
One of the most popular simples "for
spring war" formerly was hop tea a
pungent but by no means unpalatable
drink. One cupful just before going to
bed was said to both insure good sleep
and rouse the liver to action so clear
ing the clogged system the "treat
ment" to be continued a month or six
weeks. A trial of this remedy is de
cidedly convincing. To make , to one
"good pinch" ( one-third of a cupful ) of
loose hops add one pint of cold water ;
steep in a granite saucepan fifteen niiii-
utes ; strain. Woman's Home Compan
ion.
Oil Cloth and Linoleum.
Oilcloth and linoleum are ruined oftener -
tener in the cleaning than in any other
manner. Too hot water and the free
use of soap are the usual faults in the
treatment they receive. Left half
wiped , they looked very bright while
wet , but dingy and streaked when dry ,
and the colors soon crack and peel off.
A soft flannel and lukewarm water are
the best things for general use upon oil
cloth , and you should make sure that it
is thoroughly dried after washing.
Equal parts of milk and warm water
used upon oilcloth brightens and im
proves it.
Permanent Cure for Bunions.
Place bandage around the foot over
the bunion very tight ; carry one end of
bandage up around the great toe , forc
ing it out from the other toes toward
the inner part of foot a little more each
day. This treatment , if persisted in for
a week or tAvo , or if bunions are very
bad , a little longer , will cure the cause
of bunions , namely , enlarged joints
from ill-fitting shoes. Bandage can be
worn very comfortablj * in the shoe.
Household Hints.
A pinch of salt added to the white of
eggs will make them beat up quicker
and lighter.
Quinces and hard pears and peaches
should be steamed till tender before
being put in the sugar syrup. Partly
cook them , let them stand in the syrup
over night and finish cooking next day.
In making a mustard piaster , take a
piece of lard and stir tin * dr mustard
into the lard until it is a ti..ck paste
and will just spread. Spre I on a piece
of lawn and apply to the affected part.
This will not blister.
Keep canned fruit , preserves and jel
lies in a cool , dark closet , that Is well
ventilated. Thus - . -
only t--in yuu prevent
the troublesome "sweating" sure to
make the outside of the glass sticky
and disagreeable if kept where there
is darkness.
To menu a broken plaster cast , paint
the broken surface over two or three
times with very thick shellac varnish ,
and after each application burn the al
cohol over the flame. When the shellac
is soft , press the parts together and tie
in place until cold. The article will be
as strong as it was before being broken.
An Excellent Combination.
The pleasant method and beneficial
effects of the well known remedy ,
SYKUP OF FIGS , manufactured by the
CALIFOUNIA FIG SYRUP Co. , illustrate
the value of obtaining the liquid laxa
tive principles of plants known to be
medicinally laxative and presenting j
them in the form most refreshing to the
taste and acceptable to the system. It

Statistics of the Cuban "War.
Prof. Arthur Codezo Vinageras , of
the Havana Academy of Sciences , has
compiled the vital statistics of the late
war of Cuba with Spain. He does not
claim that it is absolutely accurate , but
that it is approximately so. He esti
mates the mean population of the isl
and in the years 1S95-9S as 1,546,000 ,
of whom 532,000 were colored. Of this
number 40 per cent , of whites and 72
per cent , of negroes were illiterate.
The percentage of male to female was
54 to 40. He estimates the number of
the Spanish army sent to Cuba during
this period as 234,000 , and the number
of Cubans fitted to take arms as 302-
000. Of this number he finds that 71,000
actually rose in arms , while 202,000 re
mained irresolute. The remainder , al
most 30,000 , went into exile. The num
ber of armed Cubans killed during the
war was 10,300 whites and 6GOO ne
groes ; of unarmed fighting men 11,400
whites and 12,000 negroes. Weyler's
order of reconcentratiou was responsi
ble , Prof. Vinageras estimates , for the
death by starvation and disease of 387-
000 persons men , women and chil
dren. Of this -'umber 202,000 were
whites. The total loss of Cuban life
by the revolution was 418,300. The
Cubans in arms at the end of the revo
lution he estimates at 28GOO. The
total loss of the Spaniards was 22,000
in battle and 100,000 by disease.
