If Mrs. Lew Wallace in her article jn the ' 'Murder of the Modern Inno- ; L'ciits" ' desired to arrest attention and to have it widely read she certainly succeeded. Perhaps no other similar ulicle of modest length has been so ; generally read and commented on es pecially by ladies. It is strongly and attractively written and published in a ladies' journal of wi.ie circulation. A great city iiko Boston could not be 2ontent with a school no better than that possessed by a little city , nor with so simple a course of study. Therefore ; there must be a vastly more comp.ex o ind elaborate system of studies and in - struction regardless of he-ilth or capacity - ty or the fact that a child can only si learn about so much in a given length ; 3f time. But to the great majority of the schools in .Nebraska the article in juestion bears no special message , and indeed hardly touches them at all. The State Journal last Friday con tained the information that the Santa Fe has announced that the order abro VI gating feeding in-transit live stock rates , which was to take effect April 1 , has been suspended until May 20. Jt tl seems that the railroads have practical ly given up the plan of abolishing the ' ' rate , owing to the general opposition of. the stock shippers all over the west , who demand that if the rate is abolish ed an equivalent shall be substituted. Many had made contrasts based on this rate acd its abolishment would have worked a great hardship. It is expected that all the other trans-Mis souri lines Avill follow the action of the San1 a Fe , and that the orders issued [ abolishing the privilege will be quietly rescinded. Stock shippers all over the west have been greatly wrought up over the proposed action of the rail roads , and the protests have been nu inerous and emphatic. ' tv Fined 'cm Both. .While on one of his not infrequent jamborees last Friday , Amos Strong" got into a game of "sevenup"with Geo. Ross , liveryman near Fort Xio- brara , and presently became involved in a quarrel over a game which was being played for a team of horses. Amos tried to strike Ross , and his brother interfered and stopped the fuss. This turned Amos' wrath to Jack , and after a little scuttle he began - ! gan throwing pool balls at that indi vidual. Jack dodged all the missies but one. which caught him as he was | fleeing through the back door of the i soloon. After Jack's escape Amos i an.d Ross got mixed up again , and in j a little while Ross was a very badly j damaged article , and his face looked | like it had been run through a threshing - ! ing machine , but none of his injuries were of a serious character. j About this time Marshal Layporte appeared on the scene , but all was quiet and he knew not how to proceed as he was not a witness of the affray. After consulting with the village trustees , however , he as their repre sentative caused warrants to issue for both Sheriff Strong and Ross , charging them with having fractured the village ordinances. A whole lot of talking was done about lighting the case , but Saturday afternoon the two appeared before his honor , Judge j rowne. pleaded guilty , and were as-1 messed for the benefit of the village treasury in the following sum : Amos Strong , 825 and costs : George ! Ross. 8" ) and costs. The judge told jAmes j Amos he gave him the larger sum be- j : ause. being a peace officer , he ! should have known better. Peace now icigns o'er the village , and those fraternize with John Barleycorn lo it m a quiet and respectable man- tier. Elected County Attorney. Word comes from Ainsworth that ! he contest case of Da vision vs Toli- irer has been decided in iavor of the plaintiff , Judge Westovei deciding j that E. Mae Davisson was elected j ounty attorney last fall by a ma- j iority of three votes over her oppo- j lent , J. C. 'IVuiver. This case has ittracted widespread attention , in- rolving as it did questions of import- j nice to the whole state. We have lot received particulars , but under stood that the defense were to raise he question of eligibility * , on account f the plaintiff's sex , and also attack -he constitutional ' of the ballot aw now in force. It is not yet known vhcther the case will be taken to the supreme court , but it is very probable hat it Avill not. Citizens Ticket Elected. The election Tuesday was veiy iiiet. no excitement being raised by either candidates or friends. The otc was large , considering the fact hat no endeavor was made to bring ut the voters , 142 ballots being cast. tVhen counted the\ ' were found to be ast as follows : Cornell. $ ) ! ) ; Luchvig , 52 : T.
