The only loss of stock reported since
the last blizzard is that of Bennie
Roberts. A bunch of two-year old
steers drifted on to the railroad west
of Irwin Tuesday night and 27 head
of them were killed by the snow plow
Wednesday morning. Gordon Jour
nal.
Ed Davenport , weather observer at
Valentine , and one of the war horses
of the republican party of Northwest
Nebraska , was in Crawford on busi
ness last Saturday , and ofcourse call
ed on this great moral and duly recog
nized republican outfit. Crawford
Tribune.
About a dozen of Mrs. Ludwig's
friends treated her to a very neat
surprise party yesterday afternoon ,
the occasion being her sixtieth birth
day. Several nice gifts were pre
sented the surprisee , and a pleasant
time was enjoyed by all who were
fortunate enough to attend.
Joe Desert , one of the old timers in
this locality but for the last few
years one of the prominent sheepmen
of Casper , was in town the first of the
week renewing acquaintance with
his many friends. Joe has gone out
of the sheep business after cleaning
up a nice little pile of money.
Sheepmen are slowly but surely
working east , but we do not believe
they will ever superccde the cattle
men in Cherry county. There are
undoubtedly many good locations for
sheep in this county , but to our mind
the country is pre-eminently a "cow
country' ' and will ever remain so.
We met Jim Peck , who has a ranch
29 miles north of Cody , on the train
last Tuesday morning. He was ac
companied by his two children , who
have been attending school heie. He
said Rushville has a number one
school , and expressed his apprecia
tion at the progress his children had
made there. Rushville Recorder.
Scott Pullman has severed his con
nection with the 101 outfit and is now
engaged in looking after his own
stock interests. It was not because
he did not like freighting.
From the hill tops the valleys have
the appearance of large lakes dotted
with small islands , there being more
water than there is dry land.
Saturday , the Sweeney Brothers
were dehorning , and dehorned 350
head of cattle , both large and small ,
of all sexes and ages. Pullman Cor
respondent Whitman Sun.
Among the bridge men in town
Tuesday were Geo. C. Wise , C. R.
Ross and R. Z. Drake of Omaha : D.
L. Hammond and Chas. MolTett of
Kansas City : A. Rohr , Leavenworth :
M. L. Scott , Wahoo : Geo. F. Ivony , J.
B. Marsh and J. S. Carpenter , Des-
Moines ; Geo. Tampen , Lincoln ; D.
Holder , St. Joe : W. C. Parks , Cedar
Rapids ; and to say that they were a
gay and festive lot of people is to ex
press it mildly. Nothing was too
good for them and , we came near
saying , nothing too sporty for their
constitutions. We wish the county
could build a bridge every month.
The citizens of Valentine met in
regularly called convention in the
county judge's office last Saturday
afternoon and nominated the follow
ing for village trustees :
P. F. Simons.
E. Sparks.
T. C. Hornbj.
D. S. Ludwig.
C. H. Cornell.
This ticket has twice before been
voted upon , and was twice elected ,
and we believe the voters of the vil
lage are eminently satisfied with the
ivork the board has done for the
town. All these gentlemen take a
f reat interest in their work , and our
town can do no better than by re
flecting them. Up to date no other
ticket is in the field , but we are told j f
that one will be filed Saturday. j

Court House Bonds and Site
Tuesday the court house bonds ,

Wednesday the site for the new-
building' was located on the knoll on
north Main street four blocks from

These two events mark a note
worthy epoch in the history of Cherry'
: ounty
The bonds were bold at open sale ,
Dnlv t\ro bidders presenting1 them
selves , and Nelson Brock was awarded
the bonds for $12,100 , and agreed to
forfeit the first six months' interest ,
unounting- $300. This in elfect
nakes the bonds briny a premium of
> 400 , or 3i per cent , and is considered
i very jjood sale.
"When it was announced that the
joard would select a site for the
Building- yesterday afternoon , the ex-
: itement ran high and the clans be-
jan gathering- all quarters. A
lozen different sites were offered to
: he county free of charge , and each
lad its partisans. All the locations
iffered were good , but finally tne
: ommissioners b } ' a unanimous vote

> y C. H. Cornell , hence the county
milding will be built on the little
: nell on north Main street , overlook-
ng the town. This site is 150x200
eet in size , and sets in the middle of
Iain street. A 50 foot street sur-
ounds it on three sides , and the
outh front is bounded by an 80 foot
treet. The building will be four
ilocks from the depot and when com-
iletcd on this spot will be an orna-
aent to the town , and a source of
Tide to the whole county.
