Postmaster Sherman has been quite
ill the past week , and W. E. Haley
and J. H. Yeast have been assisting
Miss Watson during the bus3r hours.
Representative Shore is a member
of the house committee on School
Lands and Funds. Why the speaker
did not put him on Live Stock and

J. A. Fike was called by telegram
to the bedside of a sick brother last
Sunday morning. The home of the
brother is in Illinois , and the word
come that he was not expected to

Sarah Ann Miller has been adjudged
insane by the county board of in
j sanity , complaint being made Mon
day by her husband. Japheth Miller ,
of Woodlake. The unfortunate
woman will be sent to Norfolk.
Hon. O. P. Billings , of Norden , was
in town this week and purchased two
cars of hogs from Cherry county far
mers , paying three cents therefor.
He shipped yesterday and will prob
ably visit Valentine again in about a
month.
R. F. Pett3'crew was in town Satur
day and with a smile which reached
almost to his ears informed us that
his wife presented him with a lively
little boy baby Friday. Fish says it
ain't very big but it's a dandy just
the same.
Ed Ross , formei ly of the Twelfth
infantry , returned to Valentine Sat
urday and will once more run his
Iiver3' stable near Fort Niobrara. He
says the boys of the Twelfth are very
much opposed to going to the Philip
pines , and are using every possible
means to secure their discharges.
Hon. John Shore came home Friday
night and spent Saturday and Sunday
with his famil3' . He informs us that
his was the only desk in the house
that was decorated with a boquet at
the opening session , and naturally
feels that he has something to be
proud of. In his opinion D. E.Thomp
son at present is the leading candi
date for United States Senator.
County Attorney Morrissey has
rented the two west rooms in the
Cherry County Bank building for his
office , the county allowing him three
tons of coal per year and he paying
his-own rent. Superintendent Brown
will use the present county attorney
office for her work , and retiring At-
torne3' Walcott will move into the
building heretofore occupied by
Clarke & Tucker. He is having a
new front put in this building and
feoth rooms are being entirely refitted
and repairel. Clarke & Tucker will
move into the Watson building , south
of the postoltice.
J. J. Bothwell , of Pullman , camei n
Monda3' after two Short Horn calves
that were shipped to him over , the
Burlington from Iowa. The3' were
fine animals and came through in ex
cellent shape.
What came near being a fatal
shooting affair happened at Seneca
on Sunda3r evening about ( j:30 o'clock ,
when Nels Ikes , a boiler maker , ein-
plo3ed b3r the Burlington , shot drug
gist Goddard in the thigh with a 38
caliber revolver. It seems that Ikes
is of a quarrelsome nature and came
into the drug store Sunda3' afternoon
looking for trouble , when Goddard
asked him to leave the store. Some
words followed , when Mr. Goddard
shot in the floor near Ikes to scare
him out , and he left the house. About
6:30 : Mrs. Ikes came to the store asked
for Goddard and backed out on the
sidewalk when Mr. Goddard stepped
out , and she started to go around the
buildinsr as though trying to lure Mr.
Goddard with her. but he noticed
Ikes standing in the street and start
ed to step into the store when Ikes
shot at him , inflicting a severe flesh
