The Donoher had a narrow escape
from destruction by fire 'last Friday
morning. The furnace under the
north-wing-of-the-hotel became over
heated and set fire ! to the' ' building.
but it was checked ere much damage

Dr. H. P. Belt was'over from Rose
bud Sunday and-Mdn'd ay. It is cur
rently reported that he and his part
ner on the drive , Webb , were so- en
chanted with the beauties of the

L. H. Trowbridge , the new com
missioner , came down f rom Merfiman
Tuesday and will take possession of
P. Sullivan's chair today. Mr. Trow-
bridge is a fine looking man , jovial
and honest , and we doubt not that he
will make a good commissioner. ,
John Adamson and wife received a
welcome New Year's gift in the per
son of bouncing baby boy , Doc
Johnson and wife . assisting in the
presentation of the gift. This is
J ohn's iirst boy , and we presume . he
will feel so big that he won't lookat
common people any more.
A man at. Ghadron has invented a
method of "taking" photographs
fifteen feet-square-with tiie lease of a

a .way by which a man with a 2 by J
brain can realize the iniquity' of the
gold standard and imperialism all
will rise up and call him blessed.

Hon. John Shore left Sunday morn
ing for Lincoln , where he will spend
the winter in the halls of Our state
legislature. Wnile he is one of tne
minority , he goes to tne scene of con
flict witn a strong determination tc

for the best interests of his constitu-

J. A. Hornback took charge of the
City Hotel Saturday , and gave . the
boarders at that hostelry their first
meal at noon of that day. Nels Polen
and family have moved into tJieWard
property on the west side , and are no
-longer connected with the hotel. We
have not yet tested the new cook's
ability , but we are told she is all
right. - -
While going home from Cody : Mon
day morning Bob Gillaspie's : horse
fell and threw him to the ground
with such force as "to dislocate his
right shoulder. A surgeon was tele
graphed for and Dr. Dwyer went tc
Cody at once and brought the injured
man to Valentine Tu'esdaT and he is
now at the hospital and recovering
nicely from his injury.

Frank Frush was up- from Wood-
lake yesterday to visit his family.
He is taking care of 650 head . of
calves for Dawson & Ball atI. . C.
ShauPs place , and says they are. get
ting along splendidly. He expects to
begin feeding oats this week and will
continue feeding until Ma } ' , when he
expects to turn out the prettiest
bunch of 3rearlings in the county ,
County Suptt W. F. Morgareidge ,
of Valentine , came up to Gordon last
Saturday evening and remained until

Tuesday night. He came up to visit
the primary department of Gordon
public schools which had adjourned
for the holidays. He was looking
after a good primary teacher. Gor
don has the coveted , prize , but.doesnjt
want to give her up for a while yet !

town Friday as a witness in" the Chris
tiansen case. Mr. Fritz- the'retiH
ing postmaster and. merchant at
Brownlee , and was the leading 'candi
date on the populist ticket -at the
election in 1890. He has many friends
in. Cherry county who are interested
in his welfare and will be. pleased to
learn that his business has prospered
greatly during the last 3ear.
