Some people seem to think that a
saloon bill is a dishonorable bill and
rthat they arejustified in refusing to
jpay ine same we conress tnat -we
are unable to see -it that way and
dont know why a man should refuse
to pay a liquor bill any more than
that they should refuse atiy other bill
Tfee law recognizee the saloon as a
legitimate industry and licenses them
to do business Can a man then re-
i
fuse to pay his bills to a legitimate-
busieess and keep a dear conscience

The editor of this highly moral and Inline ntial
department is becoming supremely weary of the
man who Is continually telling him what will be
done to hlin if he puis it in the paper Whom
the editor wants to see is a man who will tell
what will be done if lie dont put It in the pa
per Some people seem to think a newspaper
mants a dog and should be treated as sucli
with commands ara threats instead of requests
and persuasiveness
Not more than a thousand miles from
entme is a piece of land that several parties
want A wfinicn had homestead papers on this
particular pleos of land but it appeaTS she had
not complied with the law in regardtorcsldence
In order to rtbtain this land acouple of gentle
men proposed to contest the womaas right
However- they had already takeu asnuch land
as the government allowed tbem so they pre
vailed upon a young man who worked for one of
them to da the business Here -another snag
was struck the young man was only 90 ears of
age Ttsc law prdvides though- that the head of
a family reuardless of age -can Uiomestead 160
acresnlland and it was tbenpreposed to have
theym marry some one aud oscoine the head
ofatfaaiily Several girls Mere proposed to
but dvh and eVerybnt Tejectefi the oter The
parties then came to Valentine and seveial
women were approached but with no avail
Almost at their wits eudUity finally thought
of T prostitute here and getting into the good
graces of this woman offered her a small sum
afcraoney to marry they She accepted the
offer aud the y m proceeded to the judge s
oflice to obtain the necessary license but failed
as lie could not remember bis intended wifes
name This caused a tielay the authorities got
onto the scheme anil upto the present time the
jy m is still a bachelor and unless all signs fail
lhe will remaiu so for years to come We pub-
Ush this story mepalyitc show the length to
which some parties will go in order to increase
ttielr possessions of this worlds goods
On the 8th of February the following petition
-was circulated arounSd towu aud was sigued -by
eighteen persons
Valentine Nebr Feb 8 1833
To the Honorable School Board of District Nol
Cherry county Nebraska
The uuiersiguedvvoters and cltizenstn said
district must respectfully petition that you make
no disposition ofthe old school building -or
grounds until after the regular June annual
meeting of said district at which meeting the
voters can decide just what shall be done with
the same
One of tbe Inherent rights of citizens of this
country is the right of petition but we think
that it looks a little odd to have a petition of
this nature circulated when a regularly caHed
meeting has already disposed of the questionat
issue A meeting of voters had been held and
by a unanimous vote authorized tbe board to
sell the old schcfol -house and rounds At that
time we had not heard a word against scuh
action and investigation discloses the fact that
not one of the parties who -signed the petition
attended the meeting referred to although it
was well advertised by notice by the newspa
pers and by word of mouth Here is wheroour
citizens make thegreatest mistake of their lives
they fatl to attend meetings of this sort cau
cuses etc aniKhen they complain if action is
not taken the way they want it But this is -not
the reason we put this subject ou the dissecting
table The operators knife or typewriterIays
bare the following facts The petition was cir
culated and dued Feb i lite Ujud uskud lur
bids lor the old building aud they were opened
on the 28 among the bids was one from the
party whose name apptars first on the petition
the board signified its intention of rejecting al
bids offered on March 3 maik the date The
petition icas filed with the school board The
query naturally arises What would have be
come of the petition had this partys bid been
accepted heveral otnttr queries also arise in
connection with the incident but we will no
enumerate
