A BRYANi DEMOCRATS VIEW
The great sensation of the week in
political circles was a letter to the New
York Journal from Arthur MJwen
headed A Bryan Democrats View of
ilr Jlryau This artiele was a
Btrong arraignment of 16 to 1 and its
value arises principally tretn the fact
that the journal was the -only metro
politan paper that supported Bryan in
the presidential campaign and MEwen
is one of the editorial wi iters of the
sheet As an item of interest to our
readers we uive below a small portion
of the article which will give a good
idea of the whole thing which was
about three columns in length
What reason is there in sense what
Teason in sane politics why Mr
an should stated on 16 to 1 and speak
ing as the head of the democratic par
ty say He that is not for me in
this is against met
Is there not enough ground outside
of a question ol ratio to draw demo
crats together upon for common war
against the rule of plutocrats the
fleecers of the people
Many -very many supported Mr
Bryan and will support him again
should he bo renominated not because
of but iu spite of 10 to 1 They voted
in behalf of the democratic spirit of
the whole movement which his can
dldacy represented Isee that ho is
credited with announcing that he is
not a single taxer Now 4 consider
the single tax as of lutiuitely greater
importance than the silver question
yet I am aware that it is not yet an is
sue in national politics and am willing
to let Mr Bryan hold what opinion he
pleases on the subject of the justice
and industrial consequences of private
ownership of land Hundreds of
thousands of single taxers in whose
view the question of whether the
medium of exchange shall be both
gold and silver or gold only 1s a com
paratively trifling one voted for Mr
Bryan and would again Hundreds ot
thousands of other men not single
taxers but disagreeing with the 16 to
1 ers did the same thing because the
general trend of the -new democracy
appealed to their sympathy and T
Not division but harmony is the
need of the democratic party It has
room in it for -all Americans wno be
lieve in equal rights no privileges
and government by the people instead
of by the plutocracy The business
of a true leader should be to make en-
trance to the ranks easy and to strike
down all artificial teats that would ex
clude such as have the Tight spirit
though they may lack faith iu minor
particulars of the cieed of proposed
policies The 16 to 1 test of
doxy this question not of bimetallism
but of ratio- has no more intimate
relation with the soul of the new dem
ocracy than the tenet of infant bap
tism or infant damnation has with
real Christianity
4 DISGUSTED REPUBLICAN
The editor of the Petersburg Ind
News is a rock ribbed republican and
during the last campaign was a pros
perity shonter of acknowledged ability
He whooped it up for the go p and
insisted that it was better to -open up
the factories than the mints He also
insisted that if McKiiiley was elected
and a protective tariff law enacted
prosperity would come in a wave that
would fairly swamp the country Af
ter election he said that prosperity
was on the way antLadvised his
to wait Every time that someone
asked him why the wave was not in
light he merely replied that it was so
big that it had to travel slowly but
-that it was just around the curve
Every week he sent out the prosperi
ty supplements furnished by the re
publican editorial bureau confidential
which aforesaid prosperity supple
ments were filled with prosperity
pews minus all refeieuce to wage re-
ductionB But the editor of the
Petersburg News is willing to admit
that hope deferred mikeih tne heart
lick In Ms last issue he ays
During each month of ihe year we
furnished our readers with the repub
lican prosperity supplements no
mere such supplements will be 3ent
out with our paper The supple
merits are a frauda delusion and a
lie We are asfeamed of thfen sick
and core at the idea of sending out
such prosperity supplements when
at the same time se are unable ta col
lect enough money to meet our bills
after fearing made them World

The Dingley law produced a surplus
in the treasury of nearly two million
dollars as a result of December im
portations How ahout the failure
of the new tariff law How is it dem
ocrats Crawford Gazette
Well not much about it Is it -so
wonderful then that a republican tar
iff law should produce a surplus
Ujudgiug from the amount of fuss
made by our friends we would sup
pose this to be a fact even as it is
But what if the law did produce a
small surplus one monc We hope it
will continue to do so a long as the
country is in need of revenue but why
do not our friends speak of the many
months when the law produceil a de
ficit Wo have known exceptionally
bad marksmen to hit the bullseye oc
casionally by simply -shutting their
eyes and pointing the un Dont
ciow so much yet awhile brothers un
til we see whether or not this was not
simply a lucky shot The Lord knows
we dont want the government to be
continually running in debt just for
partisan reasons but we must still con
tend that the Dingley law is a dismal
failure as a revenue producer and we
see no reason to believe it will ever be
otherwise
He -was called the roasting editor
For from morn to iate at night
He roasted 2veryonehe knew
And everythliiR in sight
He -roasted this he roasted that
In words of keen sarcasm
Till one glad day he passed away
In sarcastic spaanu
He went to where all roasters go
A place not cool nor vret
But still that roasting editor
Is roasting roasting yet
