The annual Cherry county race
meeting opened yesterday
For weeks this has been looked for
ward to and horse owners have been
actively engaged in training their
hordes for the various events
Horses began arriving here two
weeks ago and not a clay of the last
week has gone by without from one to
four matched races being ran The
prettiest and best of these was a quar
ter mile dash Tuesday afternoon by
J P Suttons Sleepy Dick and the
Wild Irishman from nermosa The
horses got a good stait and the race
was an exciting one being won by the
Irishman by a nose Time 23 3 5
The program for yesterday was as
above The starters in the first race
and those who entered them were

A Charbonueau Dr Briggs was the
favorite plenty of even money being
offered on him against the field Bet
ting was lively but the backers of
Briggs apparently scared the crowd
and only small amounts were wagered
The horses went to the pole in the or
der named and got off in a bunch the
start being very prptty Sleepy Dick
took the lead closely followed by -the
Irishman until the home stretch was
reached when the latter commenced
gai ning taking second place easily
and finishing first by a neck Dick
second and Briggs third Time 24
The time would have been much bet
ter had it not been for the dust and
wind blowing straight in the faces of
the horses
The ladies race was wen by Anna
Seager on Sorrel Jim Mrs Geo Hers
chey came second on Gray Pete and
Delia Leggett third on Roaney Day
The race was finely ridden each of
the women being splendid riders but
the sorrel won easily
There were four starters in the bi
cycle race and some good riding was
done but the wind prevented good
time being made The first heat was
made in 327 the riders finishing in

Kennedy will celebratethe glorious
Fourth of July or Independence Day
on Monday July 5 The program for
the day commences at 5 a m with a
salute of 100 guns An address by a
good speaker from Omana will be one
of the features of the day The sports
will consist of a ball game greased
pig steer and broncho riding ring
tournament etc A good string or
chestra a swing and a merry-go-round
will add to the pleasures of the day
Fireworks and balloon ascension at
night
Crookston will celebrate on Satur
day the 3rd and preparations for a
splendid time are being made The
celebration will be given under the
auspices of the M W A
Wood Lake is figuring on having a
grand celebration on the third Satur
day Prof J O Berkley of Ains
worth will be the orator of the day
and those who fail to hear him will
miss something good A bicycle track
is being built around the lake and ex
cellent sport is promised The Johns
town band will furnish music for the
occasion

Tuesday Jack OConnor familiarly
known as Battle Axe Jack filled up
on bug juice and commenced celebrat
ing in a rather hilarious manner All
afternoon he celebrated but at length
his rather good uatured badinage was
turned to abuse and then his friends
tried to persuade him to go home and
go to bed but he couldnt see it that
way Result Arrest a fight a
bruised face a night in jail and yes
terday morning a fine of 50 and costs
given him by Judge Towne In the
scuffle Constable Geo Hammond re
ceived several bruises and a cut on
the side of his eye
