The Valentine boys somp time ago
received a challenge from the Sparks
ball club for a game and Saturday
mornin g a half score of our youths
went over to picnic town to teach
the country boys how to play the
national game They did it All the
Sparks people need do when they want
to play ball is to do what the Valen
boys didnt do and they will win every
time The first three innings of the
game were beauties the score stand
ing 4 to 6 in favor of Sparks Then
something broke and Spares made 20
runs in the fourth The rest of the
game was a nightmare and the game
closed with Sparks 55 tallies ahead It
is but fair to our boys to say they
had never practiced an hour before
going to Sparks and some of them
had hardly seen a ball this year It is
running bases Sunday morning at 9
oclock The work of the game was
fairly divided Valentine doing lots
of fielding and the Sparks boys run
ning round the diamond A return
game will be played here Saturday
June 12 and some good playing wiU
probably be done at that game
MEMORIAL AND DECORA
Large Crowds Assembled Sunday and
3Iondny in Honor of tltc G A R
and the Brave Soldiers of the
Sixties who are Gone
The Methodist church was comfort
ably filled Sunday morning with citi
zens gathered to do honor to the dead
heroes of the civil war and the living
veterans of that memorable struggle
There were but thirteen members of
the G AR a sad fact truly when
we think of the numbers whobut a
few years ago made this their home
The exercises were commenced with
a song by the choir followed by a
prayer from Rev Moore An anthem
scripture lesson and song by quartette
composed of Misses Query and Bartley
and Profs Beatty and Jeffers came in
the order named Rev Moore deliv
ered an interesting sermon briefly re
viewing the establishment of slavery
in this country and following the
course of events up to the time of the
emancipation proclamation Judge
Tucker made a few remarks and said
this was probably the last memorial
day which would be observed under
tne auspices or tne ij a it on ac
count of the age of the members and
the rapidly decreasing numbers in
their raus More than one eye was
moist as the little squad of once vigor
ous soldiers marched down the aisle
and out of the church led by John
Dunn the commander of the local
post who is so badly crippled with
rheumatism and tast advancirigige
that he can only walk by the aid of a
crutch Rev Moore spoke a few
words after the veterans had left ask
ing all good citizens to see to it that
Memorial Day be continually observed
even though the veterans were no
longer able to take charge of the exer
cises
Monday morning at 930 a large
delegation of citizens went to Fort
Niobrara to decorate with flowers the
graves of the old soldiers who lie bur
ied there Col Andrews kindly sent
in a number of wagons and transpor
tation was furnished for all
In the afternoon the program as
published last week was carried out
Cornell hall was crowded and every
number of the program was given
strict attention Hon J A Scaraa
born of Gordon was orator of the
day and spoke very feelingly of the
gratitude we should feel for the old
soldier and the lessons to be learned
from the day He deplored the nec
essity of war and strongly favored the
submission of all national differences
of opinion to a board of arbitration
He sympathized with Cuba and gained
applause for his words After the ex
ercises at the hall everyone fell in line
and marched to the cemetery headed
by the Twelth Infantry band-
Owing to the illness of Mr and Mrs
J A Carroll and Mrs C R Glover
the program for the evening was
changed and Mr Scamahorn regaled
the audience with some of his prison
experiences He treated his subject
from the humorous side and nicely
entertained his hearers

Gives up in Disgust
We have after mature deliberation
concluded to postpone the braiding of a
railroad through this valley this season
What we may do in that line in the fu
ture is also altogether problematical
It is annoying to be compelled to dis
appoint our people in this matter at
this time but circumstances are such
that a postponement is deemed obliga
tory No hereafter our time and
energy shall be devoted to growing al
falfa and pigs and let McLean and
his Short Line go directly to the devil
on a hand car through a very worthless
country Bayard Transcript
An Indian Uuthieak
Dispatches to the daily papers from
Helena and other points in Montana
say that the Cheyenne Indians whose
headquarters are at Lame Deer Agen
cy are on the warpath and have killed
about a dozen men among them being
five U S soldiers The trouble arose
over the shooting of Hoover a sheep
herder by Indians Two companies
of cavalry and a company of infantry
from Fort Keogh are on the scene and
much trouble is feared Yesterdays
papers contain dispatches from Miles
City which say number of Dakota
Sioux have joined the hostiles and run
ners have been sent to invite more
Sioux to join them on the war trail
Unless the Indians run down into
Wyoming none of the Department of
the Platte soldiers will be called into
action
Good Words for Otto
The second part contained the star
performance of the evening the cornet
solo by Otto Fritz of the 12th Regi
mental Band of Niobrara Neb who
is enjoying a furlough Mr Fritz is a
cornetist of splendid ability He gets
at the soul of a piece and reproduces
it on his cornet with an understanding
and spirit that is truly stirring He
knows music and he plays it There
is depth and feeling in the tones as
they roll in swelling cadence from his
instrument He has Soul in his con
ception and the mechanical skill to in
fuse his interpretation with it His
music appeals to the tenderest cords
of the heart and never fails to thrill
It never grates or jars It is ever suf
fused with a pleasing softness We
expect great things of Otto It is
needless to say that he was encored
He responded to the first and bowed to
the second Sigourney la News
