so induigedin a tirade against the proposition to lond the county and build a court house Tho article is signed Birdie and winds up as follows Just think before you rote There is not a juryman or assessor in the county that can bo paid for his labor without taking a county warrant and waitiug fivo or six years for his pay or have it cashed for fifty cents on the dollar by some individual Defeat this scheme by all means The statements made above are lies pure and simple and are calculated to do great damage to our county Cherry county is in a greatfceal better condition financially than tier neigh bora -and instead of having to wait five or six years creditors of the county get seven per cent -interest on their warrants and have them paid within twelve months Should tho possessor wish to bell he can at pres ent do so for par value instead of fifty conts on the dollar as this beautiful specimen of a bird says Xobody proposes to bond the county for 14000 as the article says in an other place all tho btest men of the county are in favor of a ourt house and if a special election is called It it will not cost 1500 Birdie should come to town and view the learn how much it costs the county every year for rent figure on the benefit to be derived from a new building aside from the di rect saving in rent and fuel and then go tibme and kick her him or itself for being such an ass as to oppose the bonds 16 a special -election is called the bonds will carry without a doubt John Patton was killed in the civil -war June 5 1863 InDecember 1863 Ills widow Rachel Ratton was granted l pension of 20 pc month which she -drew atil 1876 thirteen years when she married one Wm Culberson In 1889 8heobtained divorce from her second husband She applied for a pension again on the gronnds that she was a soldiers widew the president vetoed the bill and the house passed itoverthe veto Congressman Kem voting with the majority At the same time the house also passed a bill over the executive veto granting a pension ta Catharine D Mowatt widow of Alfred B Soule The cases aie parallel excepting that in tka latter case the second husband died In his veto message Cleveland says If she is to be again pensioned be cause her second husband does not sur vive her the transaction has more the complexion of an adjustment of a governmental iasu ranee on the life of the second husband than -the allow ance of a pension on just and reason able grounds It U for the vetoing of bills like those mentioned that the President has obtained a record of being hostile to the old soldiers and their widows It is astonishing the amount of gall dicplayeiby some people who feel sore because they didnt get what they wanted For instance the report is being circulated that the commissioners awarded thecounty printing to the highest bidder when the report of the meeting of thei hoard gives the lie to the statement That report was print ed meach of the local papers Again some people are pounding County Clerk Elliott over the head with what they think is a bludgeon though its upnly aetuffed club by insinuating that Jhe is oppressing the taxpayers by ttfylng the tax list to the treasurer in 4acre tracts This is pureijuncombe He has done nothing but tfojlow the letter and spirit of the law in the case Howeyer -it anyone knows he is not going tobe able to pay his taxes and wants hi8cland advertised in 150 acre tracts hecan have it done by simply complying with the law as found in Sec 4338 compiled Statutes of 1895 About March 1 a magazine The Qsacle will be issued from
