CHERRY COUNTY INDEPENDENT sv THE CLASS OF 97 Delivered Tlielr Hair Yearly TneMdav Evening The High School classes of the pub lie schools gave a public entertainment at the M E -church Tuesday eveaing splendid memory and handled subject well touching upon all im portant points Myrtle Peltijohu fol lowed With a humorous recitation Aunt Melissa on Boys which capti vated the audience She was followed by Charles Cook who in his oration on Look Before jou Leap showed the bad effects of fast company tobacco liquor and laziness on youth and gave the young people some good advise The double quartette followed with a song having the same title as the oration A Practical Education an oration by Mae Davenport was perhaps the best thing on the program This young v lady possesses an exceptionally good voice and knows howto use it the in flection of her words andv the accom panying gestures being expressive to a great degree She showed the value of an education to a person in all walks of life and seemed to be of the opinion that to be be successful one must be a specialist Tacy Collett followed with a recitation Searching for the Slain which was well dehv trans Tiiorn came last delivering ad oration on Accept Your Genius and Say What You Think a rather so cialistic topic and the oration was in strict keeping with the subject He showed how much better the world would be if everyone did as his sub ject commanded but -they dont The program was completed by a yong Balmy and Soft rendered by the High School Quartette Mae Daven port played the accompaniments for all the songs Prof Watson explained to the au dience that this was the first time either of the four members of the graduating class had ever lecited any thing of their own composition and this being so their proficiency is all the more remarkable One thing how ever was noticeable the girls did much better than the boys and unless the latter make marked improvement the girls will carry off the houors of the class Everyone was highly pleased with the eveuings exercises and words of praise were heard for each pupil on the program Next year perhaps the school will not have to secure a build ing other thau the school house when public exercises are to be given As the twig is bent the tree is in clined How can a child whose growth is stunted by foul air whose eyes are injured by poor lignt whose lungs and other organs are harmed by first freezing cold then suffocating heat whose perceptions of beauty desires for cleanliness and order are killed by confinement in a dirty and ugly room grow into a manly maa or a womanly woman Some time ago the Skinner boys at Cooper were arrested for disturbing a public meetiug and Monday were tried before the local justice on that charge County Attorney Walcott being present to prosecute The boys were discharged A E Thacher returned from Oma ha last Friday night and the Hungry Four is complete once more Al says Omaha is quite a thriving little vil lage now here owns dogs and besides there are a lot which are unclaimed We have dogs of all de scriptions sizes ages and colors and yet the people of Valentine are not J dogmatic as a rule The canines are a mild tempered lot most of their fights being good natured but an ordinance should be passed prohibiting part of them from roaming the streets at will It certainly is not pleasant for a lady to have to get og the sidewalk and walk in the mud in order to avoid a pack of dogs yet it is done every day right on Main street too Owners should keep them at home a part of the time at least NO 2 OVERLOADED
