Florence Hamer Class drill in Primary Reading Mrs Lizzie Crawford Committee Another Republican Speaker The speech of Hon Chester B Brad ley of Casper Wyo at Cornell Hall Tuesday evening was well attended1 and attentively listened to but the gentlemen failed to make any converts He carefully retrained from referring to democrats except asour populistic democratic friends reserving the title democrat for Palmers supporters He jumped all around the silver ques tion and struck the Mexican snag which all smart republicans haye learned to avoid and quoted figures which were manifestly false The first hour Tvas devoted to prov ing that silver legislation and agitation was solely responsible for our present financial depression and gold standard democrpts smiled Then he climbed into the tariff wagon and swore that tariff tinkering is the only thing that made hard times and said more tinkering is necessary to make 4them better That was different Taken as a whole his speech was a failure He advanced no new point he made no new argument he did uot prove a single statement he made Next Sheridan County Fair The races were considered very good this year There was but one trotting race that being a free for all Guelf Jr won first money in the trotting race time 2 4A The Tace was made against a strong wind The remain der of the racos were running races- and carried with them the usual in terest and excitement There were some very good horses on the track The last day ot the fair was windy and dusty But few were on the grounds before noon The speaking had lo be dispensed with The rtfees came off as advertised and for all the wind blew and the dust was blinding the gate receipts were not behind last year and the crowd seemed to enjoy themselves Thereceiptswillbe suf 1 ficient to pay every dollar of premiums in full All the races were paid in full before the horsemen left the grounds There was not a murmur of complaint from tiny source All the horsemen were well pleased at their treatment This is our style of doing business The other premiums will all be paid in full in about ten days Gordon Jour nal JPlayed at War t The second batallion Twelfth In fantry under command of Maj Hum phrey in camp on the Mmnechadnzaj last Friday night prepared to resist an attack which was expected to be made by the first batallion sometime between 7 and 1030 oclock pm and in Com pany withcSeven other gentlemen the editor went out to see the fun Major Humphreys men were stationed and vigilant we learned and we were es corted to his tent by a guard which halted us at the river fdrd lEvery body waited patiently for the attack but it came not It seems that two men from each company at the post were sent out with orders to enter the camp if possible but they were all caught with one exception before they accomplished their purpose When the nature of the country where the camp is located hills and gulches canyons and bluffs is taken into con sideration this fact speaks well for the vigilance of the men and officersbf the second batallion When recall was sounded at 1030 the hills echoed with the cheers of the men and they all re turned to camp in good order Our party was splendidly enter tained after the play was over and while we did dot see as much as ex pected none of us failed being much impressed with the way Uncle Samfs boys did their duty Lying on the hill side of a cold night waiting with every sense alert for one knows not what is certainly not the pleasantest task in the world but there were no kicks Jveivanee FelixNollette rejoices over sight to see the capabilities of our sandy soil when it receives sufficient moisture Try again is an excellent motto Well our picnic is past and much disapproval is expressed in our neighborhood of the action of some parties in calling down Mr Car roll after he had commenced his speech To say the least it was a sad breach of good manners and a viola tion of our national constitution which grants the privilege of free speech to all c Cody Mrs H T Holliday went to Omaha the first of the week for medical treat ment Miss Kate Weed and her younger sister departed for the east Tuesday morning
