Whereas we believe that while
the representative system of law mak
ing was the bestknown to the fram
ers of our government and was suf
ficient to secure the ends sought in
the evening of the eighteenth century
in this the close of the nineteenth
century has beoome an institution by
which the mass of our citizens are de
prived of their rights and the result of
their labor is wrenched from them and
therefore it has outlived its -usefulness
Resolved therefore That we the
populists of Cherry county Neb in
convention assembled for the purpose
of taking primary steps towards se
lecting delegates to the populist na
tional convention to be held at St
Louis Mo July 22nd 1896 demand a
more efficient and democratic system
of law making which we believe has
been discovered through the initia
tive and referendum system known as
direct legislation Whereby no enact
mentcan become a law until it has
been endorsed by the people through
the ballot
Besolved That we again declare our
devotion to the principles of the
Omaha platform and demand that
upon the adoption of the mnitiative
and referendum system of government
that the finance land and transporta
tion demands of the Omaha platform
shall be initiated and referred to the
people as the system requires
The business of the convention
namely ihe election of six delegates
to attend the state convention at

and after somewhat lengthy and tire

The glorious Fourth has departed
and with it hath gone many a young
girls lovely complexion Old So re
spects not the eud of the human nose
even on the occasion of the celebra
tion of our national independence but
shines down with terrific fervor and
with no regard for the laments of a
Sweltering humanity beneath until
with perspiring faces we state that we
would be willing to give up Jhe fond
dream of our youth a sight of an Ital

set in northern Nebraska for when
the hour of sunset cometh we are hap

Mr and Mrs James Day spent Sun

We interviewed three men Sunday

we had missed half of our life by not

2 ow we are in a quandaryf or if those
three men are right we have missed all
of our life and are one half in arrears
at the present time Truly this is a
deplorable state of affairs but a severfe
headache was the cause of it all
j
Our citizens left the city oil various
roads and conveyances Saturday each
firmly convinced that he or she was
headed direct for the placeT where a
real good time could be had and now
each one of the pleasure seekers lays
claim to have had a much better time
than anybody else in town Follow-

bright July morning sallied forth

We could plainly hear the cannon
-fired at the Fort or Valentine at -our

it made us think of the last time we

ltusHtiile Races
The races at Rushville last week
were not very well patronized we are
told not over 450 people turning out
during the three days recing and the
last day was the Fourth of July too
Charges that the majority of the races
were fixed ase freely made and the
knowledge that this was the caBe un
doubtedly kept many at home who
would otherwise have gone to see the
I sport It was given out that races
-would be run at catch weights but
when the men and horses were on the
grounds weights up were insisted
upon This caused a great deal of
dissatisfaction and L W Handy who
was present whith his mare Alice
informes this paper that numbers of
the horses on the track did not enter
at all and that it was hard work to
even fill the races The score card
for the last day shows this and if the
charges made against the management
are true Rushville need never try to
have another race meeting Kittie
Foster who ran here won the half
mile and repeat Saturday making the
first heat m 49 and the second in 49
flat Barney McCoy wasnt in it
taking fourth place in the quarter
mile race
