Horace Boies of Iowa has ad dressed the following letter to James A Creelman the war correspondent recently expelled from Cuba Waterloo Iowa July 2 To James Creelman Esq My Dear Sir On my return from the farm I find on my table yours of the 27th ult and the beautiful Cuban flag you were kind enough to send me I sincerely thank you for each The view you express of the brave peo ple who have battled so long and with such heroic courage for a place among the nations of the earth could not fail to touch a sympathetic chord in every American freemans breast That the day will soon come when the Spanish Government will realize what has long been apparent to the rest of the world that a brave people widely sepa rated from the seat of their parent Gov ernment thirsting for liberty determined to obtain it at any cost are and will always be a source of weakness instead of strength and expense instead of profit of grief instead of joy to the Government that holds them in subjection by force is I am sure the universal wish of every lover of freedom in all the nations of the globe and bjr none is that wish uttered with such excess of desire as by those of our own country who revere the flag our fathers defended in a struggle as deadly as that in which our Cuban neighbors are now engaged Sincerely yours Horace Boiks TRADE FOR THE PAST WEEK Midsummer Dullness Prevails in All Lines of Business R G Dun Cos Weekly Review of Trade says An extensive shut down of cotton mills is solely in the hope that half production in July and August may clear a largely overstocked market Wheat declined 1 cents and recovered 33 cents but western receipts continue remarkably large 2411719 bushels as against 811 S10 last year for the same week Atlantic exports show a similar increase and for live weeks flour in cluded have been 9847073 bush els against 5855427 last year The stocks in sight are greater than a year ago and though winter wheat yields less spring wheat seems likely with fair weather to yield more than last year Corn promises remarkably well and also oals Cotton greatly needs rain in parts of Texas but the best of reports come from most other sections and a large in crease in acreage is generally reported The closing of many mills both north and south causes another decline of a six teenth in the price and proves that past consumption has been to a considerable extent unreal Failures for the week have been 257 in the United States against 197 last year and 22 in Canada against 24 last year GOES THROUGH A BRIDGE in an Illinois Wreck An extra freight train on the barnyard just outside of Nelson and began snapping at everything that came in its way A cow a calf and two hogs were bitten The hogs died several days ago Welch was not aware that the cow had been bitten until a few evenings ago she attacked him in the yard and he had a severe struggle to escape from the beast He secured her with a heavy chain to watch the progress of the case which developed into unmistakable hydrophobia and the cow and calf were killed In the melee with the cow a small portion of skin was knocked from Welchs finger and in catching the cow by the nose he got some of the saliva on the scratch A few days later the finger began to swell and to be somewhat painful He went to Shickley to have the madstone applied The stone adhered so tenaciously to the wound that it made him very sick It was applied a second and a third time the last time failing to adhere He does not anticipate any further trouble from the wound It is not known how much if any more stock was bitten Quarreling Over Water Rates At a meeting of the city council of Ne braska City the other night an ordinance was introduced which provides for the erection of a water and lightnlant yss BIG LAWSUIT WILL FOLLOW Action of the Crawford School Board Creates Comment The annual meeting or the Crawfora school district held the other night pre sented an exceptional state of affairs Owing to deaths and resignations only one member of the old board retains his seat on the new board and five new members were elected During the past year the school has been under the charge of Prof Leetham as principal with Miss Buncher as assistant principal and four teachers under them The letiring board some tune ago appointed teachers for the ensu ing year giving Miss Buncher the princi palship and leaving Prof Leetham out Contracts were executed with the new teachers Prof Leetham remained there and was in evidence at the meeting where the main issue presented was his rein statement as principal His friends were out in force and as Miss Buncher is on a visit to the east her interests were not so well represented The attempted rein- statement of Leetham at this stage will no doubt bring on a keenly contested law suit The principal and in fact only objection urged against Miss Buncher was that she is a woman and the strangest part of the matter is that the majority of the electors present were women who went almost solid for the men who cried Down with the women Prof Leetham is an able and efficient teacher and did good work in the school labt year but his contract expired and Miss Buncher was simply promoted to the vacancy without having made application therefor FATAL QUARREL OF BROTHERS Charles Moore Shoots Frank in r Difficulty Near Benkelman A shooting affray which bids fair to re entered about the right nipple and went out through the back Sheriff Lat shaw Prosecuting Attorney James and a physician were summoned from Benkel man to go to Haigler where Charles went to give said the rounder the other day I doubt if there is anything alive which has such remarkable eyesight as an ordin ary blue runner snake You know that I am a pretty good shot with a rifle Well the other day I was roaming about the fields when I saw a blue run ner stretched out at the base of a small tree He saw me also but did not move although I saw his eyes glisten in the sunlight I raised the gun drew a deliberate bead on his head and fired He was still there when the smoke cleared away but I had not touched him I fired again and again and then grew tired I realized that he saw the bullets and simply dodged them and escaped Just then a man came across the field and I called him and asked him to attract the attention of the snake for a moment The moment I observed that the runner had taken in the situa tion and was not looking at me I fired and killed him Now to snow you that he had dodged the balls I found every bullet that had left my gun in a space the size of a button just behind the place his head had occupied Quick Why a blue runner can see a streak of lightning before it pierces the clouds New Orleans Times Democrat This Was a Knowing Mule A mule in Jersey City the other
