only 4 homestead proofs being made

15 parties for 2400 acres taken under
the timber culture law

At the annual meeting of the voters
of school district Ko 1 held at the
school house last Monday evening M
V Nicholson and J T Keeley were
elected to succeed themselves A
committee of three composed of G II
nornby O W Morey and G P Crabb
was appointed to see about getting a
site for a new school house and the
meeting adjourned to Tuesday July
when the committee will report About

farm mortgages filed for a total of
254840 and 9 satisfied for a total of
347406 No mortgages were filed on
town property but one for 350 was
released 41 chattle mortgages were
filed for 1477249 and 26 were re
leased for 1022921 After next
month we may expect to see the re
lease side of the record overshadow
the other as the season for selling
stock will soon be on The smallest
mortgage released was one for S2o
Brick Yard Sews
W P Alsip informs this paper that
he has already burned 325000 brick
and is now burning another kiln of
325000 Wood is the fuel used he
having found that it is much cheaper
than coal
Frank Whitteear resigned his posi
tion and returned to his home at Ains
worth the middle of last month
C V Thorn has returned from the
yard He intends going to Denver in
a few days Frank Thorn has also
come home

A letter received this morning from
Fort Niobrara says The Boston
Comic Opera Co played to a fair house
last evening Mascot was rendered
in a masterly manner Each act
was greeted with great applause
Especial mention must be made
of the excellent costumes of this
company Our little Opera House has
never seen before its footlights any
thing to equal the costume worn by
these players Mr F A Wade imper
sonation of Prince Lorenzo was a de
lightful treat to the audience Mr
Wade is an able actor and competent
of being placed in the front rank of
comic opera players Mr E Brumage
who played the part of Bocco the
farmer set the audience wild with
laughter The Gobble Song a duet
rendered by Miss Etta Merris Wade
and J B Fulton captivated the au
dience Gertrude Kimberlys renda
tion of Coming thro the Rye was
encored again and again Miss Kim
berly has a phenomenal voice sweet
and clear with a great range It seems
as easy for her to reach high E as it is
to sing in the middle register This
company -will produce Mascot at
Cornell Hall tomorrow night and will
give Oolah Saturday night

Charles Reece of Simeon called on
us Monday morning and informed us
that great preparations are being made
for a thorough good time at that place
on July 3rd
W Honeys new residence across
the way is rapidly assuming graceful
outline and will prove when finished
quite an addition to our town

back and Miss Ida Leach spent several
days of last week at the home of J M

much fishing on the lakes
The school census recently taken
shows that there are forty children

New potatoes have made their ap
pearance Chamberlains Colic and

The hay crop will be immense in this
vicinity Stockmen are already talk
ing of commencing to cut as early as

week nimself and wife are long

Sparks
Plenty of rain and the crops are do
ing finery The ground was too wet to
plow last Saturday
Mr and Mrs Clarkson have return
ed from their visit to the lakes south
of here They report having had a
pleasant time but it is rumored that
they left more fish in the lakes than
they took out
The Arabia ball team visited Sparks
Saturday and had a ball game and horse
race The former was won by Sparks
and the latter by Arabia
Last Saturday was Childrens Day
at Sparks and the church was crowded

S F Gilmans Condition
At present writing Mr S F Gilman
who was not expected to live when the
last issue of this paper went to press
is considerably improved and unless
new complications arise he will soon
be out of danger His wife two
daughters and family physician Dr
Watzek of Davenport Iowa are at
his bedside C E Black who looks
after Mr Gilmans interests in Omaha
was here until Tuesday morning Mr
Gilmans family have rented A T
Whites residence on Cherry street and
the sick man will be moved there
some time tomorrow The family will
occupy the house for at least two
months as Mrs Gilman thinks thercli
mate here will prove beneficial to her
health
To properly accommodate their ever
increasing business Jackson Bray ton
and John Yeast have commenced the
erection of a new 50x80 two story stone
building on the lots north of Jackson
Braytons store The basement has
nearly all been excavated and it is the
intention of the builders to have the
new store completed by October 1

for the purpose of building and fur
