Saw a Meteor
While returning from Fort ffiobrara
Tuesday night about 11 oclock the
editor of The Democrat and LcRoy
Leach of Wood Lake were treated to a
sight which is not allotted every man
in his brief span of life The night
was quiet and clear stars were shining
and the moon was sinking behind a
bank of clouds on the- western horizon
when suddenly the sky was illumina
ted as with a powerful calcium v light
and objects could oe seen as plainly as
during tlte brightest day Hastily
glancing toward the south a meteor
was seen deseending to the earth with
all its gorgeous brightoesv sparks
trailing in its course tlielwhole making
a scene of dazzling splendor As it
descended the meteor assumed the
most gorgeous -Tines of the rain bo wY
rapidly changing from bine to green
then to yellow and orange finally be
coming a dull red before it neared the
ground and disappeared This was a
sight which eclipsed all the efforts of
man in the way of pyrotechnieal dis
play and will never be forgotten by
the two pilgrims who on the lonely
prairie at that late hour saw it and
were filled with awe as they contem
plated the wonderful work of na
ture The meteor seemed to fall not
more than five miles away
