The group enjoyed a covered dish luncheon at noon. The afternoon was spent visit ing and looking at family pic tures. Candidates (Continued from Page One) Is the candidate of the Mrs. Jay cees for the title of Karnival Queen. She is enrolled as a sophomore at the University of Nebraska this fall. She is a graduate of Brownell Women's School. She attended high school here and in New Jersey her sophomore and freshman years. She was active In drama at Brownell and was vlce-presider.t of her senior class. At the University, Miss Roun tree Is affiliated with Gamma Phi Beta Sorority. Plans for the King Korn Kar nival highlighted the meeting. The group will enter a float in the Karnival with Harold Dukes as chairman of the project. Members of the Post, and Ladies Auxiliary will assist in decorat ing the float. The annual Smorgasbord will be held Sat., Sept. 21, at the Club rooms. Tribute was paid at the meet ing In memory of Mrs. Edwin Poggemeyer, wife of Edwin Pog gemeyer, past District 6 Com mander of the VFW. Several at tendee funeral services in Nebr. City. The insurance program now In effect for members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars can be fully explained by the post commander Mr. Davidson or quartermaster Dale Bowman, members are urged to contact either for information. The annual drive for the Christmas program is being planned with committee mem bers in charge to complete plans for the project in the next few weeks. A festive two-day activity Is on the agenda for November that will be of interest to all members, and this program will be announced soon. WCTU Meets at President's Home i The Woman's Christian Temp ' erance Union met Tuesday at I the home of Mrs. Glen McClure i for its monthly meeting with 12 . present. The Rev. Wlllard Scott wa3 ! present and told of the Cass 1 County Association of Ministers j meeting and how they are pro- testing requested serving of beer I on Sunday at Winterset Inn and opposition to Issuance of such a ' license. ' ' Members of the WCTU agreed to help in this matter. , The annual year books were , made out with leaders and host ' esses scheduled. The presldeot, Mrs. McClure, : called the meeting to order. Each member responded to roll call and minutes of the picnic meeting at Mrs. R. B. Hayes's were read. j Pledge to three flags Amer ican, Christian and Temperance i was led by Mrs. Ivan Balfour. ! Mrs. Schwenneker was in charge of devotions. Six members and an honorary member paid dues. Dues are $3 65 or a "Penny a Day and a Prayer." By paying this amount, they become "Rock of Ages" members. The president displayed the new banner received from Na tional Headquarters for being a "Rock of Ages" Union. The unit 1 has received this banner four years, one of seven receiving it. As Sharon Dunlap has entered : Methodist Hospital Nursing School in Omaha, the Union pre sented her a box of three pairs of white hose on behalf of her grandmother. The new study book, Mind If I Smoke? by Harold Shryock will be taken up at the next meeting. As Mrs. Julia Troon, a lifelong member of the WCTU, will be 100 Oct. 10, each member is to send her a card at St. Mary's ! Hospital, Nebraska City, where she is a patient on the fifth floor. Mrs. Eva Jackscn became a ' member. Mrs. Hopkins is again j a member. I iiext meeting will be with Mrs. George Farley with Mi3. Ivan Balfour of Union as hostess and Mrs. Pearl Mann, program leader, Oct. 8. Mrs. McClure will attend the State Convention at Holdrege 8ept. 18-20 and will take with her some of her prize posters. Anyone wanting to Join the Union is invited to the next meeting. $3 Million for CI Home Loans In Nebraska An additional $3,000,000 has been made available for direct home loans to Nebraska war vet erans during the fiscal year be ginning July 1, 1963. A. H. Duxbury, VA Regional Office Manager in Lincoln, an nounced today that more than $3,000,000 direct home loans have been made to Nebraska veterans in the first 6 months of I&63. ... Direct loans to eligible war veterans may now be made In all counties of Nebraska except Douglas, Lancaster, and Sarpy. Since the program began in 1950, the VA has made nearly 3,500 direct loans to Nebraska veterans, totalling over $30,000,-000. Merry Workers Merry Workers Extension Club met at the home of Mrs. Henry Viniiuska Sept. 10. There were 17 members present. Happy Birthday was sung to all members having birthdays during the summer. All sang two songs plus the Extension Club song. Mrs. John Hild gave a report on cancer. Mrs. Jack Vallery read devotions. Mrs. Joe Loch- man gave a report on driving with bright lights. Plans were made for a Korn Karnival float. Election of officers was held with Mrs. Lyle Hild named president; Mrs. Leo Brink, vice president; Mrs. Wm. Repair, secretary, and Mrs. Leonard Hild, treasurer. Each member brought some thing for the Retarded School. A meeting Is to be held Sept. 24 at 1:30 at the home of Mrs. Wm. She Is a past state president. Mr. and Mrs. Angus Campbell of Canoga Park, Calif., have been visiting Mr. and Mrs. William Whipple, her brother, several weeks. They planned to take a trip to the east coa.st. Ed Morris attended the State Convention of the American War Dads. He is state treasurer. Vic tor Ross accompanied him. The convention will be In Nebraska City next year. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Baker, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Herman, Mr. and Mrs. Ted Brannon, Mr. and Mrs. John Hansen, Jack Baker and Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Balfour at tended the funeral of George Lutz at Nebraska City Monday morning. Mr. and Mrs. Lutz lived In the Union community for 28 years Deiore moving to Nebraska City. Ivan Balfour spent the evening Friday with his nephew, Marvin Balfour, while Mrs. Balfour at tended the Junior Woman's Style Show at Weeping Water Audi torium. Mrs. Marvin Balfour was in the show. Elected were: Connie Johnson, presi dent, Julia Mitchell, vice presi dent, Lois Hansen, secretary; Debbie Spear, reporter; Kay Nutzman and Theresa Klme, courtesy chairmen. The troop is divided Into two patrols. Connie Johnson Is the leader of one and Julia Mitchell the other. One patrol will have charge of decorations and the other will keep the scrap book up to date. Mrs. Arthur Johnson and Mrs. Lonnle Wood are the leaders. Debbie Spear, reporter. Clark Balfour south of Nehawka. Mr. and Mrs. William Qetchius were also there. The Union Woman's Club will be host to the County Conven tion at Union Methodist Church Oct. 3. The WSCS of the church will serve luncheon. Word has been received that Ralph Kennedy of Spokane had suffered a heart attack. He was in Union recently to attend the funeral of his brother, Charles.
