Caldwell SMILINC All of us have noticed or had called to our attention the way in which a disturbance in a pond will cau&o ripples to ex tend ail the wiy ." across, i n ever-w i d ' "v ' ening cir- .: cles. Even a small stone will do it. There are many human activities that will cau'.e the same effect. Ore is a yawn. There is something about a yawn that is contagious. May be that's because boredom is catching. But another thing that has the same power is a smile. Anytime someone sm.les in a crowd, everyone reacts. One person may feel that he's being laughed at, and he'll check to make sure he wore the right tie or matching socks. Another will look embarrassed, and per haps release the hand of the woman beside h.m. A third ob server will find himself smiling too, without knowng just why. But the ripples will go through the whole crowd, and most of the people will feel I little bet ter for it.
