Caldwtll THOMAS JEFFERSON Some men re remembered ej personalities, iome by their deeds. Thomas Jefferson, whose birthday in 1743 is remem bered o n April 13th, is remem bered most of all for his words. Jeffer son has profoun dl y affected the lives of every American. More than any other individual, it was he who found the words to express the truths he called "self-evident," the fundamental principles set forth in the Declaration of Independ ence. When he wrote it at his homemade portable desk, he was Just 33 years old. This ycung man had learned a lot tor his years. He had the assistance of a committee of learned men ohn Adams, Ben Franklin, Robert Livingston and Roger Sherman but it was Jef ferson who found the right words. It nvas be who wrote that "all men are created equal . that tney are endowed by their creator with certain in alienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness . . ." The man will never be for gotten, for a great nation was founded on hu words.
