Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Kime Take Tax Refund In Saving Bonds, Chairman Urges If you're in line for a refund on your 1962 Federal income tax return, Ccunty Savings Bonds Chairman Walter H. Smith has a word for you. Two words, In fact: Buy bonds. This year for the first time, Mr. Smith points out, Uncle Sam Is making it possible for you to take your refund in Series E Savings Bonds by the simple ex pedient of putting an "X" In the appropriate box on the tax form. Last year some 40 million tax payers received cash refunds on their taxes. Judging from sam plings of opinion, a lot of them would have preferred to get their money in Savings Bonds if they'd had the chance. Bond Chairman Walter H. Smith, who is Attorr.ey-at-law wants to make sure any of them who live in Cass County know they now have that chance. The way the bond option works is simple. The Treasury will issue the smallest possible number of E Bonds of the larg est possible denominations to cover the amount of the refund. If there's anything left over, a check will be written for the bal ance. The cne complication comes If the cash balance is from one to 99 cents, sitice the check-issuing apparatus can't handle anything less than a dol ler. Details are given in the in structions. What about joint returns? Mr. Smith gave us the answer to that one too. "John and Mary Smith" on the tax return be comes "John or Mary Smith" on the bond registration, mak ing them co-owners. Post Office Calls z 'Operation Xmas' " 'Most Successful' Operation Christmas 1962 was the "most successful" In the history of the Tenth Region of ' the Post Office Department. 1 This region is comprised of the states of Nebraska, Kansas, and Oklahoma, with headquarters in Wichita, Kansas. During the period, Dec. 1 through 31, more than 250 mil lion pieces of mail were pro cessed in the seven largest post offices in the region, an in crease of 4.7 7o or more than eleven million pieces over the same period of 1981. This record workload was handled with 37, 237 less clerical hours, or a re duction of 5 over the previous year. Mail for delivery within the Tenth Region Increased by 2.7, or more than three mil lion pieces. Delivery of this mail ' was accomplished with 6,110 , less carrier hours, a reduction of 1.3 over that used In 1961. This Increased productivity effected a savings to the tax payer of approximately $148,000 In the seven largest post offices. No serious delays of mall were experienced this year. While this Ls due, In part, to generally favorable weather, " it was due primarily to the outstanding performance and dedication to duty of career postal employees. Compared to past years, very few temporary employees Were used. Throughout the three state area, 1338 temporary em ployees were used this year, compared to 2,659 last year. In Plattsmouth a mall volume increase of 17.7 per cent was reported by Postmaster Vern C. .. Hendricks. This Increase was handled lo-. cally with the use of 71 less- clerical and carrier hours than " allowed for the quarter ended - Jan. 4. 1 ,. , . Journal Want Ads Pay
