SKA Meiklejoan Papers The attics of Nebraska's old homes may house unsuspected collections of historical mater ial. Often the historical value of irreplaceable photographs, diaries, or yellowed packets of letters are not recognized, and the bon-fire or trash heap claims materials which iould have been saved. However, it is gratifying that this Is not always the ca.ie, largely due to public-spirited and discerning individuals who recognize the possible value of the ancient attic treasures. Such was the case of the correspond ence of George de Rue Meikle john recently given to the Hist orical Socletv bv the estate of John Kemp of Fullerton. George de Rue Meiklejohn was a state and national leader of prominence of the period of 1H81-1918. Born in Waupaca County. Wisconsin, in 1857 ha received a law degree from the University of Michiean in 1880. That same year he came west to Nebraska and established a law practice In Fullerton. He soon became active In local and state politics as a Republican. His rise was rapid. He was elected to the state senate In 1884 and 1888 and as lieutenant governor in 1888. He served as United States Congressman from the Third Nebraska district from 1893 to 1897. President McKinley appointed mm 10 me posiuon 01 Assistant Secretary of War on April 14, 1897, and he served in this posi tion until March, 1901, a period in which the Spanish-American War was fought. He was an un successful candidate ...for , the United States Senate In 1901. He practiced law in Omaha until 1918 when he went to California ' for his health. Mr. Meiklejohn died ln Los Angeles on April 19,. 1929, He was unmarried and was survived only by two sisters. In the third story attic room of the large heme of John Kemp, a Fullerton lawyer and friend of Meiklejohn, were found seventy boxes of the let ters. They were accumulated by Meiklejohn during his years as Assistant Secretary of War. They are first-hand sources of in formation for the historian, especially for one who is inter ested in the realities of Nebras ka politics of the period. There are letters from govern ment officials, from railroad ex ecutives, from Darents concerned with their sons in the service, and from Civil War vet erans concernine nensinr.s There are many letters from his associates in Nebraska as sessing the local political scene and discussing his campaign for the United States Senate. The Meiklejohn papers now are in the library of the Nebras ka State Historical Society. There they will be preserved and made available for the use of persons interested in the hist ory of the state.
