O. Steen, Gam Commission director. Abandoned nests are fre quently found by farmers and cause great concern and spec ulation by the public. Previous research has proven that the eggs In these nests are fertile and capable of hatching. These nests may be quite important in understanding pheasant populations. Ray Llnder will investigate the cause of nest abandonment. Fpr the last two years, Llnder taught at South Dakota State College. Before accepting the teaching position, he headed the Commission's program of re search on game birds. Commission Director Steen said the abandonment may be prompted by the presence of pheasant chicks. One hen may abandon her nest when another hen and her chicks come on the scene. This research could have far-reaching effects for the sportsman because this factor could impose the upper limit on pheasant populations by stop ping the production of chicks. Research of this type has not been attempted before as far as management is concerned, Steen said. In this study, Linder will look for birds nesting In the field and1 then erect a low pen around the nest. After making certain the hen has not been disturbed, tw' or three chicks will be put in the pen. Preliminary studies have shown that the sight of the con tact with these chicks may cause the hen to stop incubating. This action is due to the hor mone influence. If this type of nest abandon ment occurs In the wild, Steen continued, It Indicates an over crowding of available nesting cover. Such knowledge may lea( to Improved populations through management, and surplus hens could be made available to the hunter In the future.
