" - 'Stroke Rehab' Program for State Underway The Nebraska Heart Associa tion, during the summer months, is sponsoring three "Strong Re habilitation" programs in the state. The first of these sessions was held at St. Mary's Hospital in Nebraska City June 11. An in terested and receptive group of over 70 persons attended this two-session program. Included In the audience were stroke patients and members of their families, local physicians, nurses, practical nurses, aids and members of the community that were interested in the the- raputiq, advances being made to assist in the recovery of the stroke patient. The program was split into two sessions of two hours morning and afternoon. The first session included a physi cian who explained the medical aspect of the stroke and what occurs at the time of the cere brovascular accident. He was followed by a psychologist, Mr. Herbert J. Larson of the Reha bilitation Center at St. Joseph's Hospital in Omaha. Also ap pearing on the morning pro gram was Mr. John McGee, speech therapist at St. Joseph's Rehabilitation Center. The two-hour afternoon ses sion was conducted by a team of theraoutic experts .from the University of Nebraska Reha bilitation Center at the Douglas County Hospital in Omaha Members of this team included: Mrs. Lois Donovan, RN, reha bilitation nurse: Mrs. Marion Labusohr, occupational thera pist and Mr. Jack Waugh, phy sical therapist. This team described and de monstrated the theraputic dev ices and aids that are used at the rehabilitation centers in as sisting with the recovery of the patient. Question and answer periods were set aside following each presentation. The genuine interest of the audience was accented by the number of questions directed to the speakers during these per iods. Other "Stroke Rehabilitation programs are being planned for North Platte July 27 and u neiii Aug. 9. Simpkins Weeping Water Mrs. Edward Van Horn Phono 252-W Verena Meier was born Aug list. 15. 1880. in Zurich, Switzer land, daughter of Jacob and Verena Amberg Meier and died June 13. She came to Falls City at the age of three. There her mother died, but a step-mother raised her brother Jake and her. The family moved to Louis- ville where she met and married John Olson Sept. 11, 1901. They had four daughters Dorothy Inez, Hazel and Beatrice. Mr. Olsen died Nov. 11, 1323, leaving Verena with the young daugh ters to raise. After her children were mar ried she was married to Joe C. Simpkins Sr. of Reading, Mass., Oct, 7, 1945. He was a childhood friend. They enjoyed many years together until the health of both began to fail and they decided to spend their re maining years with their owr children. Verena or."Phronie" as she was called nad many noooies cooking, painting and all kinds of handwork, until her eyesight failed. She joined the Christian Church in 1904. She furnished flowers for all church events for many years. She belonged to Rebekahs Royal Neighbors, and Degree of Honor fraternal organizations. She is survived by her hus band Joe; four daughters, four sons-in-law, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. Willis Lorensen took Richard to Lincoln on Tues day where he attended 4-H Club Week ,as a guest of the Roberts Dairyi Company. Mary Louioe Detmer attended from Weeping Water also- She won the week at camp in the County 4-H Speak ing contest. The young people returned home Friday evening. Margaret Lorensen attended Grand Assembly of the Rainbow Girls in Lincoln the past week. A demonstration on hog trimming was given by John and Nancy Miller. The meeting was called tc order by Vice President, Theroh Bornemeler. Roll call showed 1C present, 4 absent, and 10 visitors. Discussion was centered around 4-H Camp and the Coun ty Fair. A demonstration on "How tc Make a Salt Block Holder" was given by Merlin and Onalee Kunz. Folders on how to make them were given out.
