What Is Sedimentation Test? I Previously, the wheat sedi mentation test was introduced as it applies to loan price of the 19G2 wheat crop. The sedimentation test is de scribed as a simple and rapid method of estimating the quan ity and qualivy of wheat protein. The gluten swelling in various acids is not a new method. Ex periments have been conducted as long as 40 years ago. Advocates of the t-e:3t believe it provides a be. ter measure of the over-all bread baking strength of wheat thin any other known single test except actual breao baking. The test is based on 2 known facts. (1) that gluten proteins absorb water and swells enorm ously when treated with lactic acid under certain conditions, and (2) that the amount of wa ter absorbed, and consequently, the extent cf the swelling, de pends upon the "quality" of the gluten. Good quality gluten (from a breadbaking stand point) absorb.", more water and thus sweils more than poor quality giuten. Tire sedimentation test is to replace the protein, test in estimating the bread baking quality of any lot of wheat. The purpose of this serves of news' release is to acquaint the general public and specifically call to the attention of vfheai producers, before they apply for a loan on the wheat crop. Planting Sudangrass Pastures It's time to think about plant ing sudangrass our most pro ductive warm-season temporary pasture, according to University of Nebraska Extension special ists. Sudangrass u normally plant ed about two weeks after corn planting time. It will make rapid growth following planting lat: this month or early in Juno. With sufficient moisture, it will provide excellrnt pasture dur ing July and August. Sudan 'a one of the best available crops to provide extra pasture or hay under dry conditions. Good seedbed preparation is just as important for Sudangrass as it is for corn. A firm, well prepared, weed-free seedbed is necessary if a good stand is to be expected, points out J. C. Swindbank, Extension agronom ist. The best method of planting sudangrass is with a grain drill. Seed .shoul l be planted at a depth of one to l'2 inches in moist soil. A higher rate of germination can be expected if the seed has been treated with a fungicide. The recommended rate op seeding sudangrass is 15 pounds per acre in western Nebraska up to 25 pounds per acre in eastern Nebraska. Setting a grain drili for two pecks of wheat per acre will sow about 20 to 25 pounds of sudangrass seed per acre. To reduce the chance of prus sic acid poLsoning, one of two re commended varieties Piper or Wheeler should be plant ed. It is equally important to use certified seed.
