Call Your News And Social Items to 2141 THE PLATTSMOUTH, NEBRASKA, SEMI-WEEKLY JOURNAL Monday, May 14, 1962 PAGE SEVEN 'Backyard Farmer' Asks, Gets Answers To Timely Questions Editors note: A new feature Is initiated today, "Backyard Farmer Questions and An swers," to provide answers tc lawn and garden questions being asked by homeowners across the State. University of Nebraska Extension specialists will supply the answers. Q. What can you do about ant hills in the lawn? A. Chlordane is one of the best insecticides for controlling ants Mix one tablespoon of 45 per cent emulslfiable concentrate In one gallon of water. The mix ture should be soaked into the ant hills. One good treatment usually will clean up an ant hill Robert E. Roselie, Exten sion entomologist. Q. Will bluegrass grow near a walnut tree? A. Walnut trees produce a sub stance which is often toxic to plants growing nearby Wayne Whitney, Extension horticultur ist. Q. What's the best way to han- Stronger Sheep Market Forecast LINCOLN The decline In sheep numbers should result in a stronger market for quality lambs, according to Universitv of Nebraska Extension special ists. "There should be a good mar ket in the future for quality lambs," says E. E. Peterson, Extension farm economist. "The expected improvement in the lamb market combined with emphasis on quality means that producers should take steps to obtain quality ewes," says Ted Doane, Extension animal husbandman. "Producers can obtain such ewes through the university or Nebraska Ewe Dis tribution Program." Homemaking 'Whys' What will keep a waistline seam from stretching? ANSWER: Use a piece of woven rayon seam tape as a stay in the waistline seam to keep it from stretching. Anna Marie Kreifels, Exten sion clothing specialist at the University of Nebraska, says rayon tape will work on syn thetic fabrics. However, don't use rayon tape on cotton garments, She cau tions. Normal pressing with a hot iron could melt the tape. As a stay tape on cotton, use a narrow cotton twill. A tape one-quarter inch wide is satis factory. If you have a narrow strip of the fabric selvage, use the self fabric to keep the waistline from stretching, she advises. How do you wash synthetic filled pillows? ANSWER: "Dacron" filled pil lows should be washed in soft ened water. Mrs. Clara Leopold, Exten sion home management special ist at the University of Nebras ka, offers these instructions: Submerge the pillow in warm wrater, (100 degrees fahrenheit) Compress the p il 1 o w several times in warm, sudsy water. Avoid severe twisting and wringing. Instead, scrub the ticking with a soft brush. Then rinse thoroughly in warm water and press or squeeze the pillow between Turkish towels. Remove as much water as possible, and dry in a breeze. Plan Budget To Fit Family The best family spending and savings plan is one that's tailored to fit your family's particular needs. Just as you choose your clothes to fit your figure, shape your family's bud get to fit its needs. "Average" or "model" budgets should be used only as a guide in setting up your system, says a University of Nebraska spokesman. . Don't expect these sample budgets to fit your family with out alterations, warns Mrs. Clara Leopold, Extension home management specialist at the College of Agriculture. die grass clippings to make compost? A. You can build a container with cement blocks to hold clip pings for a compost pile. After clippings reach a depth of 12 inches sprinkle on a little lawn fertilizer. Clippings should be stirred up once in a while and kept moist Wayne Whitney, Ex tension horticulturist. Q. What fertilizer should you use on strawberries? A. Strawberries need about twice as much phosphate as ni trogen. A fertilizer such as 10-20-0 can be applied at the ra'e of about 6 pounds per square rod Wayne Whitney Extension horti culturist. Q. What about fertilizing fruit trees? A. If you've got a fruit tree in production that Is making 8 to 14 inches of growth a year, there Is no need for fertilizer. Fruit trees need nitrogen unless the soil Is low in phosphate. If you have one or two trees In the yard, apply fertilizer as you do on the lawn. It's best to apply fertilizer after spring growth Wayne Whitney, Extension horticultur ist. Q. How do you control weeds in bare spots in the lawn that ' have been re-seeded to blue grass? A. When new grass seedings get established, the amine form of 2,4-D can be used to kill small weeds. However, the chemical should not be applied until after mowing the grass at least once to prevent damaging small seed lings. After the grass becomes established, silvex can be used to control broadleaf weeds. Grassy weeds may cause prob lems later on in the season, so you may wish to apply one ol the post-emergence chemicals to control crab grass and fox tail John Furrer, Extension agronomist. Q. Why does a split-leaf philo dendron produce leaves that are not split? A. Split-leaf philodendrcns sometimes do not produce split leaves because of unfavorable conditions. The problem usually is caused by lack of light or too much fertility in the soil. A fluorescent light placed 18 inches above the plant may solve the problem Wayne Whit ney, Extension horticulturist.
