Weeping Water News Mn. Edward Van Horn Phon 252-W There was no school in Weep ing Water on Friday due to the blizzard weather and blocked roads. Mr. and Mrs. John Ahrens were Wednesday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Murdoch. Mrs. Earl Murdoch reports that she had a letter from Virgil Miller in California. He Is spend ing the winter with his sister and husband, Rev. and Mrs. Har old Baker. He wrote that the temperature was 70 degrees and compared to our near zero wea ther, this would feel very warm. Mr. and Mrs. Lee Roy Ahrens and family, Mr. and Mrs. John Ahrens and family and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Ahrens and family of Elmwood were New Year's eve guests of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Zal oudek and girls. Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Scho maker were Sunday afternoon guests of Mrs. Fred Neumelster. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Nickels were Friday supr er guests of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Van Horn and family. They later called on Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Upton and fam ily. Mr. and Mrs. Louis Allgayer were Thursday evening guests of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Harshman. Mrs. Edward Van Horn was sponsor at the Christian Youth Fellowship meeting on Sunday evening and presented the devo tions on "Sharing". Larry Ham moru presented the lesson. Plans were made for a backward party on January 28th with the par ents as guests. Mrs. Van Horn will be in charge of the program, which will be given by the par ents. Mrs. Edward Van Horn, Carol and John were business visitors In Lincoln on Saturday. Mrs. Gary Roe and Bevely Lee were also shopping in Lincoln on Sat urday. Mr. and Mrs. Harlan Oibson were Sunday evening lunch guests of Mr. and Mrs. George Bates. Mrs. Richard Gibson and two children of Omaha visited the past week with Mr. and Mrs. Harlan Gibson. Richard Gibson had a check up at the doctor this past week. He had undergone surgery on his arm at the Meth odist hospital in Omaha. Mr. and Mrs. Louis Allgayer were Saturday afternoon guests of Mrs. Louis Allgayer and chil dren of Nehawka. Dennis Hoback of Union was a guest for a pizza supper on Sun day evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Van Horn, Carol and John. Mr. and Mrs. Lee Stratton were Thursday evening guests of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Roy Stratton and boys. Mr. and Mrs. Victor Plunkett and Wendell took Mrs. Dean Fulton and boys to her home In Ottumwa, Iowa on Friday and visited until Sunday afternoon. Carol Gilbert of Ottumwa joined them for dinner on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Fulton and family will be moving to Knoxville, Iowa, about Jan. 15. Fulton has a new engineering job there. Mrs. Lloyd Lewis returned home from the hospital Friday. Friday evening guests of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Buffington were Mr. and Mrs. George Buffington and girls. Nehawka FHA Meets NEHAWKA (Special) The Nehawka Future Homemakers of America met Jan. 10 in the Home Ec room. Jackie Dodson presided. The inspiration, a poem, "Live to Make a Life" was read by Sandra Turner. Each member gave a safety rule when roll was called. The program committee, Wanda Hostetter, Mary Llnd sey and Margie Miller gave sev eral demonstrations on Flrat Aid, the program title. Sandra Stapert led the group in singing. A short business meeting followed. Refreshments were served by Evelyn Henderson, Barbara Chandler and Beverly Bark hurst. Julia Johnson, reporter. Dr. Koch To Speak At Landrace Meeting LINCOLN Dr. Robert Koch, chairman of the University of Nebraska's Departmeent of An imal Husbandry, has been an nounced as the principal speak er at the National Landrace Annual Conference banquet here Jan. 26. Dr. Koch will bring to the swine breed group observations on the swine industry of several European countries gained dur ing a trip abroad in 1961. The University staff member was one of two persons from the U.S. invited to Germany in September 1961 to attend an international' school for scient ists in the animal breeding field. He also viewed swine operations in Scotland and Denmark. Of special Interest to Land race breeders from around the country-expected to attend the function will be the portion of Dr. Koch's presentation regard ing the swine industry in Den mark. In This Scandinavian country, some 5 per cent of the swine herds are Danish Land race, bred to meet a definite ob jeitlve: supplying lean pork for a large English market. Dr. Koch will show slides of Euro pean swine breeding stock and of work being carried out at the swine testing stations. -4 David Neilsen At Cermany Station V Corps, Germany Army Spe-cialist-4 David M. Neilsen, son of Mrs. Lola M. Neilsen, Weeping Water, Nebr., Is serving with the 3rd Armored Calvadry Regiment which moved to Germany from Fort George G. Meade, Md., dur ing November as an element in the augmentation of U. S. mili tary strength in Europe. The 3rd Armored Cavalry, en gaged in an amphibious exercise at Fort Miles, Del., when alerted for overseas movement, demon strated the combat readiness of its personnel and equipment by rapid and efficient movement to its home station and then to Ger many in less than 30 days. A driver in Troop C of the regi ment's 1st R e c o n n alssance Squadron, Specialist Neilsen en tered the Army in November, 1959, and completed basic train ing at Fort Riley, Kans. The 24-year-old soldier is a 1955 graduate of Weeping Water Public High School. Obituary Clara Hall Mead AVOCA . (Special) Clara Hall Mead daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Hall was born in Platts mouth Nov. 4, 1889, and died at her home in Avoca Jan. 8. She grew to womanhood In Plattsmouth and attended public school here. In 1903, she was married to Herman Smith at Plattsmouth. They had 12 children, six of whom survive: Lawrence and John Smith, Murray; Mrs. Dor othy Nisenwander, California; Mrs. Marie Jones, Nehawka; Mrs. Velma Ford, Plattsmouth; Mrs. Ellen Russel, Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Mrs. Mary Davis, Bliss, Idaho. She was married to James Mead in 1942. They adopted two children, Mary Lou and Buddy Lee Mead. After living In Weeping Water 13 years, they moved to Avoca seven years ago. She was a member of the Congregational Church, Avoca, of the Fellowship and the Cemetery Auxiliary. She Is also survived by her husband James and the two adopted children; three sisters, Mrs. Ruth Collins, Omaha, Mrs. Elizabeth Miller, Bakersfield, Calif.; Mrs. Bertha Bezzel, Spokane, Wash.; brother Wil liam Hall, Taft, Calif.; 49 grand children and great-grandchildren. Funeral was at the Congrega tional Church Jan. 11, with the Rev. J. E. Aeschbacher offici ating. Mrs. Roy Ruhge was soloist, Mrs. Henry Maseman, organist. Grandsons were pallbearers. Burial was in Avoca Cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Vaughn took his mother, Mrs. Valiska Vaughn to Plattsmouth Monday. She started working Tuesday at the Masonic Home In Platts mouth. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Brown, Jr., of Blair moved Sunday into the Emil Heier apartment. Mr. Brown has taken over the serv ice department of the Kahland Motor Company. Since his re lease from the army, he has been employed as a mechanic at the Chevrolet garage in Blair. Ralph Is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Brown, Sr; of Louisville.
