HERMAN GAKEMEIER, Plaintiff By Edwin T. McHugh His Attorney No. 5418 Oct. 16, 23, 30, Nov. 6, 1961. Medal of Honor Pension Raised Pension paid to veterans who hold the Congressional Medal of Honor has been increased from $10 to $100 per month by a new law enacted by the 87th Con gress.. The Veterans Administration administers payment of this pension, A. H. Duxbury, Man ager of VA's Regional Office in Lincoln, said. The new law lowers the age requirement for eligiblity from 65 years to 50 years, and elimi nates the requirement of having an honorable discharge, the VA pointed out. While all who are currently receiving the $10 pension will automatically have their pay ments increased to $100, veterans who receive the Medal of Honor in the future, and those who presently have the medal for heroism in combat service, but are not receiving the ' pension because they are under 65 years of age, will have to apply for the pension in order to receive it, Mr. Duxbury said. Call Your News And Social Items to 2141 PAGE SEVEN River Tonnage Set Record This Season "The record-breaking tonnage hauled on the Missouri River this year in spite of tremondous handicaps show that ' water transportation is rapidly be coming a fulfledged members of the Missouri Basin's transporta tion network. Moreover, it for casts a phenomenal growh once those handicaps are removed." This was the opinon of James R. Smith of Omaha, Nebraska, vice president of the Mississippi Valley Association when notified by the Army Corps of Engineers that 1961 commercial tonnages on 'the Missouri RIVer wpuld compared to 1,441,000 in 1960. The Mississippi Valley Associa tion Is a regional water resource development organization. Smith said that one important' handicap was an abnormally short navigation season. He pointed out that the 1961 season was reduced by five weeks. With a normal length season, the tonnaee erowth would have been close to 34, he said. With the short season, a 9 increase is a tremendous achievement, he stated.: The other major handicap Is the incomplete channel, he said. Barges on the Missouri can be loaded only to 6V4 to 7 foot drafts compared with nine feet when the channel Is completed, Mr. Smith explained. Since barges can be loaded to only about two-thirds of their cap acity, he went on, present rates on the Missouri are about 50 higher than on other rivers in the inland waterway system. Rate reductions made possible by a full nine foot channel will cause an unprecedented boom in river shipping, he forecast. VThp rnngt. important noed now Is to- get the nine foot channel completed from Sioux City, Iowa ta the mouth and to get the channel extended upstream at least as far as Yankton, South Dakota. With favorable congres sional action, this could be ac complished in the next two years in the lower reaches, in three or four years up to Sioux City with the Yankton extension coming along In five or six years",, he said. "Congress appropriated $11,900,000 this year for the channel and bank stabilization project but the bill carried a re striction against channel deep ening which is preventing the Corps of Engineers from com pleting the project even though the money is available," Mr. Smith said. .s "But we will get the job done" he emphasized. "When the handicaps are recmoved in the next few years, navigation and industrial development along the Missouri River will grow so fast that we will all find it hard to believe". hmnt Can Be Sneaky Why does cold weather sneak up on us, while warm weather, or warm fronts, usually give am ple warning of their approach? There are two main reasons why cold snaps In fall and winter catch us off guard. First, the cold front moves faster than a warm front. It can therefore pass in and over you more rap idly and change the weather In less time. Second, and even more impor tant, is the fact that cold fronts move across the surface of the earth with a backward slant. That Is, the cold air mass reaches us on the ground before that same cold air Is overhead. This slant sometimes extends back, at high altitude, for many miles. - Therefore, when cold air is ap proaching there are no telltale clues in the sky above, as with a warm front, which slants for ward. The first we know of it is when it reaches us at the ground level, and is usually moving rap idly (thirty or fifty miles an hour). The Country Guide "Can you tell me the wav to the church?" asked the stranger in the village. "Certainly, sir," replied the oldest inhabitant, oblininelv. "Go up the down, keep straight aiong me crooKed lane, then round the square and when von turn left you are right!"
