City Council Minutes Special Meeting Aug. 21, 1961 Council Chambers City Hall City Council met In special session as per published notice and the call of the Mayor at 7-30 P.M. with the following present: Mayor Grant Roberts, Councilmen L. W. Moore, A. W. Huebner, Wm. G. Highfield C W Rhylander. City Clerk Albert Olson Absent: none. The purpose of the meeting being the receiving of bids for converting 200,000.00 of register ed warrants into bonds, said warrants having been issued to pay the cost of constructing a Sanitary Outlet Sewer and Sew age Disposal Plant for the City of Piattsmouth, Nebr. pursuant to proceedings creating S. S. D Pursuant 'to invitation for bids representatives of six bond ing ' companies were present, after conclusion of bidding, mo tion carried to accept the bid of the First Trust Co. of 3V'i plus $3,750.00 prem., as recommended by the Bd. of the Public Works. Motion carried that the Mayor be authorized to sign the con tract with the First Trust Co. for the above. A petition signed by L. W. Moore and 3 others was read re questing paving of Avenue F, also known as Hickory St., from the existing pavement on the east side of Sixth St., and thence running east a distance of 175 feet. Motion carried be accepted. An ordinance entitled "AN ORDINANCE CREATING STREET IMPROVEMENT DIS TRICT NO. 161 IN THE CITY OF PLATTSMOUTH. NEBRAS KA, DEFINING ITS BOUND ARIES AND PROVIDING FOR THE IMPROVEMENTOFA CERTAIN STREET BY PAVING AND BY SUCH OTHER WORK AS MAY BE INCIDENTAL THERETO" was passed under suspension of rules. Motion carried to create a paving district from the present paving from 6th St. and includ ing all Whitman Ave. Motion carried to create a paving district for paving of 11th Street from 2nd Ave. to 3rd Ave. Motion carried that one more street light be installed at the Park. Motion carried to approve the Mayor's appointment of Robert Behmer as Police Officer. No further business before the Council, motion carried be ad journed. Dist. No. 159. Meeting was held at the City Hall at 7:30 P.M. with the fol lowing present: Mayor Grant Roberts, Councilmen L. W. Moore, A. W. Huebner, Wm. G. Highfield, City Clerk Albert Ol son Absent: Councilman C. W. Rhylander. After reviewing the plans, specifications and estimate of cost, motion carried plans, spec ifications and estimated cost be approved and Notice to Bidders be published and bids be open ed and read on the 8th day of September, 1961, at 7:00 P.M. Council Meeting City Hall August 14, 1961 City Council met in regular session at 8:00 o'clock p.m.. with the following present: Mayor Grant Roberts, Councilmen L. W. Moore, A. W. Huebner, Wm. G Highfield, C. W Rhylander, City Clerk Albert Olson Absent: none. Minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. The request from the Library Board was presented for an ad ditional $1600.00 for the 1961 1962 budget was laid over to a later meeting. Motion carried that a meeting be held on Aug. 21, 1961 at 7:30 o'clock p.m. for the purpose of receiving bids for converting $200,000.00 of registered war rants of S.S. Dist. No. 17 into bonds, as per prospectus submit ted by the Board of Public Works. Motion carried to approve Ronald D. Kruntorad and John D. Winters as members of the Piattsmouth Vol. Fire Dept. Motion carried that the Mayor be authorized to sign the new engineering agreement as sub mitted by Henningson, Durham & Richardson, Inc. Motion carried to grant per mission as requested to Fred Herbster to cut the curb on Oak mont Drive to lower the side walk and change the grade to his property. Motion carried to grant per mission to L. B. Topliff to exca vate in Srrt Ave for sanitarv sewer service to the property of Melvin Moritz. Motion carried to accept and place on file the report of the Police Judge for the weeks end ing July 29, Aug. 5 & Aug. 12, 1961. Motion carried to accept the report of the Parking Meter col lections for the weeks ending July 31, Aug. 7 & Aug. 14, 1961 as ' being $208.00, $244.00 & $202.00 respectively. A resolution was adopted to proceed with the street im provements in St. Imp. Dists. Nns 15ft Xr. 157 as ner Ordinances Nos. 1010 & 1011, as the protests rued were insuiiicient. A resolution was adopted to proceed with the street improve ments in Street Imp. Dists. Nos. 158 & 159 as per Ordinances Nos. 1012 & 1013 as there were no protests filed. Mrs. Donlan Hurt In Car Accident EAGLE (Special) Mrs. Pa trick Donlan was involved in a two car collision last Friday a bout 5:30 p.m. enroute home at 56th and O St. She was taken to the hospital by Mr. Eldee McKay (Eagle resi dent) who was nearby the scene of the accident. Mrs. Donlan suffered a fractured knee cap and deep cut above and beneath the knee and has the leg in a cast for several weeks. A Classified Ad in The Journal cost as little as 50 cents. 1 'i TTS V '! Mike Stacey, director of the summer recreation program for the young people in Weeping Water, announced that the Cardi nals were the champs in the summer league. Mike presented awards to the following boys: Sportsmanship award, Donald Elliott; pitching award, Terry Doyle and batting award, Brian Fitzpatrlck. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Rich and Nancy of Denver, Colo., were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Hoback. Several members of the Meth odist Youth Fellowship went swimming at Syracuse on Fri day afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Adam of Omaha were Sunday dinner and supper guests of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Taylor and Beverly. They enjoyed fishing in the afternoon. Bert Philpot was a Tuesday supper guest of Mrs. Adam Cook. Linda Rehmeier and Bevely Lee spent Monday through Fri day on the Wesleyan College Campus where they attended the Methodist Youth School of Mis sions. Mr. and Mrs. Sterling Wiles visited on Tuesday with Ray Wiles at the Bryan Memorial Hospital and with Mrs. Ray Wiles at the Ebeler home In Elmwood. Betty James of Nebraska City and Miss Roberta Knaup have an apartment in Lincoln. Miss Knaup is employed as an execu tive secretary for a Lincoln In surance Company. She will work part time until she receives her degree from the University of Nebraska in February. They en joyed looking at pictures which Mrs. Nickels had taken recently on a trip to the Rocky Mountain Park, Royal Gorge and also Wyoming. They had been in Denver, Colo., on vacation and also visited with Mr. and Mrs. J. Alton Sterling in Omaha. Leo Kirchhoff returned home on Friday from Greeley, Colo., where he had attended the sum mer session at Colorado Univer-1 sity. He will teach in Omaha1 again this year. Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Brant are parents of a son born Aug. 18 at St. Mary's hospital, Ne braska City. The baby weighed 5 pounds, 42 ounces and has been named Weldon Terry. The new baby has a brother, Wayne Dale. Mr. and Mrs. Russell Dukes of Lennox, Iowa are- the maternal grandparents and Mr. and Mrs. S. L. Brant of Weep ing Water are the paternal grandparents. Great grandpar ents are Mr. and Mrs. Henry Lemke of Weeping Water and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bevins of Lennox, Iowa. Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Kobler of Louisville are parents of a girl born Aug. 24, at Methodist hospital, Omaha. The baby weighed 7 pounds, 8 ounces and has been named Teresa Marie. She was named after her two grandmothers, Mrs. Claude Kob ler and Mrs. Edward Van Horn. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Edward Van Horn, Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Block and Mr. and Mrs. Claude Kobler of Louisville. Great grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. John Van Horn, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Hollandsworth of Wabash and Mrs. Amanda Kob ler of Springfield. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Bick ford are the parents of a boy born Aug. 24 at St. Mary's hos pital, Nebraska City. The baby weighed 6 pounds, 9 ounces and has been named Scott Alan. The new arrival has two brothers, Gregory and Douglas. Mrs. Ai Bickford of Weeping Water and Mrs. Cord Sudman of Hastings are the grandmothers. Mr. and Mrs. Rasmus Laurit zen, Alice and Kenneth spent several days with Mr. and Mrs. Roger Richards and girls at Or leans. Monday, the two families and Mr. and Mrs. Reid Richards took a trip to Norton, Kansas. Mr. and Mrs. Glen Kirchhoff and girls entertained at a birth day party for the sixth birthday of Dianne Kirchhoff. Mr. and Mrs. Hy Kirchhoff, Mr. and Mrs. John Freudenberg and Shirley and Mrs. Minnie Freudenberg of Syracuse and Mr. and Mrs. Dar rel Henke and children of Una dilla were guests for the birth day cake and ice cream. Mr. and Mrs. L. P. Spargur of Wymore and Mr. and Mrs. Mur ray Mutter enjoyed a vacation trip to Wyoming and Colorado. While in Colorado they visited with Mr. and Mrs. William Mut ter and family at Longmont. Mr. and Mrs. Edward Van Horn and Carol, Shirley Upton, Janice Kobler and Jack Shrader of Louisville visited Mrs. Eugene Kobler in the Methodist hos pital in Omaha Friday evening and saw the new baby, Teresa Marie. Mr. and Mrs. Claude Kobler visited them on Saturday night. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Nickels and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Nickels of Piattsmouth and Arthur Nickels of Buffalo, New York visited on Friday afternoon with Mr., and Cubs, Families Have Picnic WEEPING WATER (Special) The Cub Scout members and their families held their annual picnic Sunday evening at the Syracuse Fair Grounds with a round 75 attending. Following supper, Sigvald Jen sen, scoutmaster, was in charge of the pack meeting. He announced that Richard Bickford is the constitutional representative for the Cub Scouts at the American Legion meetings. He also announced that the cub scouts had won a second place on their float at the County Fair. Mrs. William Thornton will be the new den mother for Den 1 and she will be assisted by Mrs. Lynn Rothe, who has had four years experience as a den moth er. Ricky Mather was presented with a Wolf badge and a gold arrow. Tom Kunz was given his three year service pin. Four new cub scouts were ini tiated Into the Pack. They are Gregory Bickford, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Bickford, Mar lin Rothe, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Rothe, Lanny Mather, son of Mr. and Mrs. Darrell Mather and Billy Thornton, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Thornton. Mr. Jensen announced that this was the 10th consecutive year that the American Legion Post 237 had sponsored the Cub Scouts. He also displayed a large blue ribbon from the National Office for Cub Scout Pack 220 for leadership and qualifications which were met by the Pack. The new motto for the Cub Scouts is "Strengthen America Character Counts." Young Family Has Reunion AVOCA (Special) A Young family reunion was held Sunday at the home of Mrs. Seegel and Crystal with a basket dinner. She grew to woman hood in the Weeping Water vi cinity. She was married to John Bron.son who preceded her in death. Dec. 27, 1916, she was married to Ralph E. Martin. They had two sons, Divitt and Robert. Monday, Aug. 21, Mr. and Mrs. Martin and son Robert were in volved in an automobile acci dent which claimed the lives of Mr. Martin and their son. Mrs. Martin died at a Lincoln hos pital early Sunday morning. She is survived by her son, Divitt, and his wife of Piatts mouth; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Delia Wade of Weeping Water and Mrs. Emma Larson of Omaha; and five brothers, John Stratton of Louisville, Floyd Stratton of Piattsmouth and Russell, Glen and Lee Stratton of Weeping Water. Funeral was Tuesday at the Methodist church at Weeping Water with Rev. Staley Hackley officiating. S. H. Harmon was soloist with Mrs. Harmon at the organ. Pallbearers were nephews, Eugene Stratton, Daniel Strat ton, David Stratton, Robert Wade, William P. Wade and Le Roy Stratton. Burial was in Oakwood ceme tery with the Hobson Funeral Home in charge. C, New York City, Quebec, Canada and Nigara Falls and other points of interest camping out, returning home Aug. 25. Jeanne was sick a couple of days, other wise their trip was wonderful. Obituary Ralph Martin and Robert Martin WEEPING WATER (Special) Ralph Martin, son of Dudly and Mary Martin was born on January 21, 1890 at Covington, Ind., and was killed in an auto mobile accident at Weeping Water, Aug. 21, at 71. He was married at Danville, 111., Dec. 27. 1916, to Nora Bron son. They lived In the Weeping Water vicinity their entire mar ried life. They had two sons: Robert, who was also killed in the accident, and Divitt of Piattsmouth, Nebraska. Mrs. Martin died from acci dent injuries Aug. 26. Survivors are the son Divitt; a brother, Divitt of Attica, Ind.; three sisters, Grace Swisher of Danville, 111.; Ruth Gooding of Attica; and Alene of Bay City, Mich.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Robert Mr.rtin, son of Ralph and Nora Martin, was born at Weeping Water, March 13, 1922. He was killed at the age of 39. He had spent his entire life at the home of his parents. Funeral services were held for Ralph and Robert Martin Aug. 25, at the Congregational Church in Weeping Water. Rev. Fred C. Gardner officiated at the service. Pallbearers for Robert Martin were LeRoy Stratton, Eugene Stratton, Daniel Stratton, David Stratton, Robert Wade and Wil liam P. Wade. Pallbearers for Ralph Martin were Harold Thomassen, Owen Harter, Albert Schomaker, Harold Thorns, Lon M. Wade and Wilbur Clark. Mrs. S. H. Harmon was the pianist and accompanied S. H. Harmon who sang. Burial was in Oakwood Cem etery in Weeping Water with the Hobson Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. School Holiday For State Fair EAGLE (Special) Eagle school doors opened Monday for Alvo and Eagle youngsters, for a half-day session. The regular schedule began Tuesday. There will be no sessions Mon day or Tuesday to allow students to attend the State Fair. CAR-BIKE COLLISION EAGLE (Special) A car bicycle accident occurred last Thursday afternoon, when a car coming from the east on the Highway, and a bicycle ridden by Frank Beach of Eagle collid ed. There was no injury. However, the latter fell from the bike and it was considerably damaged. A light glass was the only damage to the late model car.
