Cotton, Wool Still OK By Gerda Petersen Extension Clothing Specialist University of Nebraska In spite of the rapid develop ment of man-made fibers, the natural fibers cotton and wool still rate high in popularity wim consumers. Aitnougn tne synthetic fibers have been gain ing favor, cotton and wool repre sented almost 70 per cent of the per capita consumption of the major libers used in the United States in 1959 for all purposes. Perhaps the "favor" still lies .with the natural fibers because the consumer tends1 to jiidge the man-made fibers on the basis of standards they have known with the natural fibers. For in stance comparisons are made as to the appearance of the fa bric, the "feel," durability, and the variety of fabric choices. The consumers dissatisfaction sometimes arises because the man-mades do not perform like the fibers they have previously used. Cotton is still the most popu lar summertime fiber. New fin ishes have given cotton proper ties which have made it easier to care for and more resistant to wrinkling. Consumers still prefer cotton for comfort sum mertime wear. However the da cron blouse seems to be one ex ception. It has become popular because it requires little or no ironing. For cold weather wool is still preferred by consumers for most outerwear. The orlon sweater is running heavy competition with the wool. One third or more of all sweaters purchased are of orlon. Perhaps some of the dissatis faction with man-mades has a risen because they have not liv ed up to the miracles claimed for them in advertising. Even though their properties and per formance have been great im provements in the entire textile industry, consumers have been iea 10 expect too mucn. as a result man-mades have been be- rated in many instances. But the popularity contest be tween natural and man-made fibers actually may be ap proaching a draw. Blends of the two fibers seem to be coming onto the market in increasing numbers and receiving a favor able response. Consumers are learning that man-made fibers do not replace natural fibers but do improve them. The prop erties of man-mades seem to compensate for nature's defi- ciencies in performance. Blends i B-R-A-K-E S-P-E-C-l-A-L FORDS - CHEVROLETS Brake Shoes and Labor Only Brake Service On Olhcr Cars Similarly Priced Doyel's Brake Service 312 - PAGE SEVEN make possible greater variety in color, texture, appearance and "feel" which appeal to our phy sical senses and our sense of beauty. Along with the trend toward blends there is a trend for still lighter weight fabrics. This trend is clearly evident In men's wear. In the 1940's fabrics used in a standard type suit weighed 14-15 ounces per yard. By 1952, the most popular year-around suit was made of fabric weigh ing 13 ounces per yard. In 1960 some of the heavier year-round suit fabrics weighed 12 ounces. Some summer dress suit fabrics weighing 13 ounces per yard. In 19(30 some of the heavier year round suit labrics weighed 12 ounces. Some summer dress suit fabrics weigh only 8 ounces or less per yard. This trend is also apparent in women's and chil dren's clothing. This "warmth without weight" has been achieved in a numoer of ways use of lighter weight fibers, fiber blends, treatments, and different weaves. One of the newest developments is the use of plastic synthetic foam. This layer of foam about 132 of an inch in thickness is laminated to the fabric, and acts as an in terlining. This foam lining is washable and will "allow exces sive body moisture to evapor ate." Blending of the natural and man-made fibers has just be gun. Almost endless experimen tation is yet tc be done. And at the same time new fibers are constantly being developed, of fering entirely new possibilities. One of the newest libers called PVC (polyvinyl chloride) is com ing to us from France. It is like ly to be found in blankets, work clothing and cold weather cloth ing. Certain blends of PVC with American synthetics produce a knitted fabric that is difficult to distinguish from a fine wool jersey. Elasticised threads are also contributing to light weight ap parel., Light. weignt weaves with tlasticized threads have been and will continue to be popular for foundation garments. Light er weight means more comiort. The extreme variety in blends has brought about the need for more information about fabrics and garments for the benefit of the consumer. The new textile Fiber Products Indentification Act which was effective March 3, I960, sets up labeling require ments. Labels must identity the fibers found in fabrics if it is 5 per cent of the fiber content. This information is important but the consumer still needs some indication of performance and wbat might be expected of the blend on the label. The popularity contest be tween natural and man-made fibers has been beneficial to the consumer. As a result, t n e r e have been vast improvements in quality of fabrics. Out ot the hassle has come the blends which make possible tremendous variety and potential to the en tire textile industry. A LIBRARY CARD AT 2!i West New York, N. J.
