Ag-Wildlife Co-operation 'Assured' LINCOLN Letter hunting and ' fishing go hand in hand with land : conservation practices, A)bert ; Franke, state chairmar of the ! Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation committee, said ! today, i "The Agricultural Conserva : tion Program and the Nebraska : Game Commission have many ; common objectives. If we work together, we can bring more rapid progress in meeting fish and wildlife needs while solving problems of soil and water con servation," the Walton man said. In Lincoln, Game Commission Director, M. O. Steen, agreed with Franke. "Wildlife can be managed by almost the same principles as soil.' the game chief said. "Both need protective cover, or our soil washes away and our pheasant and game crops de crease. It has been long shown that simple adjustments in land use practices can result in in creased game crcps. "Although ACP is not designed to benefit vrTdiife directly, many of the authorized conservation practices do have great wildlile value, and we encourage their use." The ACP shares with farmers on a voluntary basis the cost of establishing needed soil and water conservation on individual farms. Shelter belts planted under the program are a boon to game throughout the winter; sod waterways provide grass and cover for birds and rabbits while slowing and filtering runoff water: farm ponds which are fenced for wildlife protection and stocked with sport fish meet ACP requirements for stock water. There are many ways in which the twj departments can work in closer agreement with each other and with the farmer to benefit both land and game. Steen and Franke said. Such agreement will be forth coming, both assured. Students from CoSS CoUtlty in ' Kjay riesra PERU "The Gay Fiesta" wJl be the theme of the 1961 May Fete at Peru State Teachers Col lege. C 1 Special Is there a "coalition" in Cen tre ss ? Yes: in fact there are several ; coaliiKcs. They form and dis-j band according to the legislation ( under consideration. One coalition that has been : more or less active for 25 years is comprised of conservative; Congressmen from both parties. ; On the other side is the coalition of liberal Congressmen from both parties. There are also coalitions made up of northern and southern . Democrats, of f'rm state Con gressmen, or urban Congress men, and others formed and abandoned according to the way; each Congressman feels about each bill. Do these coalitions interfere with profvess? Or do they push forward legislation which is not needed? How do they operate? In the vast majority of cases, these so-called coalitions are not organized blocs. They are an easy way to refer to groups of Ccngresmen who usually vote one way or another. When the . conservative coalition opposes big spending bills, the liberal, press assails the coalition as blocking progress. But what the liberals forget is that these Congressmen repre sent a majority of the people in the country or the Congressmen would not be ele-cied and reelec-; ted every two years.
