THE PLATTSMOUTH, NEBRASKA, SEMI-WEEKLY JOURNAL PAGE EIGHT Monday, March 27, 1961 Troop Camp 369 sOur Boy Scouts of Troop 369 went on an overnite camping trip to the hills above the Missouri River last Saturday nite. This Troop has camped out at least one nlte a month during this past winter, and are trying to earn a 2nd National Camping Award. In order to receive this award, a Boy Scout Troop must camp out at least one nite each month with an average of 50 per cent of the troop membership partici pating. During the evening, the camp was visited by Mrs. Russell Nielsen and Mrs. Bill Spradlln. Scouts taking part on the camping trip were: Jim Mc Leod, Reubin Perez, Steve Niel sen, Calvin McDaniels, Mike Brookhouser, Steve Larson, Mark Gall, Steve Sullivan, Billy Rishel, Steve Baburek, Lloyd Fitch, Max Linder, Dave Sulli van, Kenny Hamilton, and Dave Nielsen. Fifty-eight members of the freshman class who had successfully completed their probationary period were capped at this time. The girls, carrying lighted candles, repeat ed the "Nightingale Pledge" and the "Nurses Prayer". The Bless ing of the Caps was by Reverend G. Fitzgibbon, S. J.; afterwhich the girls were capped by Sister Mary Gervase. The sermon was given by Reverend L. Astuto: benediction of The Blessed Sac rament by Msgr. J. Faso closed the services. After services a re ception for relatives and friends was held at Corcoran Hall. Miss Thun, who entered training in September, is treasurer of the Freshman Class, a member of the NSSNA and active in St. Catherine's Glee Club. Donald Thurston Hurt by Blast Of Dynamite EAGLE (Speclr.l) Donald Thurston, 27, of Ottumwa, Iowa, brother of Al Thurston of Eagle Is reported to be in good con dition at a Lincoln hospital, where he was taken and treated for injuries suffered in a dyna miting accident Sunday. He was blowing out tree stumps at Ilillcrest Golf course when the accident occurred. It caused severe and painful face injuries and necessitated surg ery. He was standing directly over the dynamite when it exploded. He was about to relight the fuse, thinking his first attempt was unsuccessful. 1 The bandage was removed from one of his eyes Wednesday, and the eyesight is satisfactory. He hoped to be released from the hospital the last of this week. His brother and family from Kansas planned to come to Lincoln to visit him. Obituary Leslie J. Winters Leslie J. Winters, son of John L. and Nora Aldrich Winters, was born Feb. 10, 1895, at Guil ford, Mo. He grew up there. In 1917, he was married to Annice Cotter of the community for a year and a half. She died, leaving him with a baby boy throe months old. On March 22, 1921, Mr. Win ters was married to Mrs. Carrie Ellen Watson. They had three children. They made their home on a farm near Guilford, Nod away County, Mo. In 1929 the family came to Plattsmouth. Mr. Winters worked seven years for Hinky Dinky Store, and then went to farming. The The past six years he and his wife have operated a trailer court at the north edge of Platts mouth. Mr. Winters was in poor health the past two years, the last 2l'o months spent at St. Jo seph Hospital where he died at 10:30 a.m. at 60. Preceding him in death were his parents, a sister, Mrs. Mar garet Wales; and a son Glen Leslie who met with an auto ac cident at the age of 17. Survivors are his wife, son Jay Winters of Plattsmouth; two daughters, Mrs. Ellen O'Bryan of Moses Lake, Wash., Mrs. An nice Lockhart of Plattsmouth; two step children who he helped to raise, Richard Watson of Omaha, and Mrs. Opal Speers of King City, Missouri; 16 grand children and two great grand children: and four brothers, Marvin of Plattsmouth, Waldon of Louisville, Paul of Maryville, Mo., Merlyn of Hampshire, Tex. He was a member of the Plattsmouth I.O.O.F. and an active elder in the First Chris tian Church. Obituary Alex Silken Alex Silken was born March 5, 1883, in Sara toff, Russia. He died March 20 at the Riverview Nur sing Home at the age of 78 years. Mr. Silken came to this Coun try in 1907 locating at Lincoln. In 1908 he was married to Marie Sakalova. She preceded him in death in 1952. He was employed as a car penter in the Burlington Rail road shops at Lincoln. Surviving are daughters, Mrs. Marie Kelkenberg, Hayward, Calif., Mrs. Rachel Grove, Plattsmouth; two sons, Nickolas Siiken Sacramento, Calif, and Walter Silken, Omaha. Three grand children also survive. Funeral services were at Cald well -Linder Funeral Home, Plattsmouth, March 23, with the Reverend A. L. Embree officiat ing. Graveside services and Inter ment were at Lincoln Memorial.
