It may become necessary to vaccinate pregnant dairy or stock cows when widespread outbreaks of rednose occur, ac cording to Dr. E. Crosby Howe, Extension animal hygienist at the College of Agriculture. Vaccination of all feeder cat tle Is recommended, either 10-14 days before shipment, or Im mediately on arrival at the feed lot, Dr. Howe emphasized. The disease Is caused by a virus and the onset Is sudden, he reported. "There Is rapid loss of weight, extreme dehydration, loss of appetite, and difficult breathing with excessive dis charge Irom eyes, nose and mouth." In severe cases, Howe added, animals will gasp for breath. The name "rednose," he explained, comes from the fact that in some cases there are tiny hem morrhages under the surface skin of the muzzle that cause it to become bright red. Alter a day or two the blood turns dark and the nose then appears black or dark brown, dry and hard. "Up to 95 per cent of a herd may contract the disease," the veterinarian said. "Although the death loss is low 5 to 10 per cent the greatest loss Is due to the inability of the recovered animals to gain properly." There is no specific treatment for the disease, the University spokesman said, although anti biotics and sulfas help to keep secondary bacterial infections in check, and help to prevent the development of pneumbfffa'.i Blood or blood plasma are also of value in maintaining or es tablishing the animal's fluid bal ance, he noted. "Prevention is the Important thing when dealing with this disease," he concluded. 7-Number Dial Plan Progresses Lincoln telephone numbers will be changed to seven numerals on a gradual basis beginning March 1, 1961, with completion Dec. 1, 1962. The new telephone numbering system, known as All Number Calling, eliminates the use of let ters in phone numbers. Instead, numbers are made up of seven numerals only. A. B. Waters, area commercial supervisor of The Lincoln Tele phone and Telegraph Company, said that All Number Calling was adopted recently by the telephone industry as the nation wide telephone number system. It is now being Introduced grad ually throughout the United States. Beginning March 1 at Lincoln, all numerals will be used lor in stallations, moves and changes of service where a change of listing is involved. Such orders will be processed in the directory and information records and the directory published December 1, 1961 will list both types of num? bers. The change to All Number Calling in Lincoln will be com pleted on December 1, 1962 when all telephone numbers will be listed in the directory with all numerals. Across the country, many ci ties are now making the change to All Number Calling, Waters said. In this area, changes to all Number Calling were made last year in Union and Greenwood. This year, Murray was changed Jan. 24 and LT&T plans to adopt All Number Calling at Ashland, Elmwood and Nehawka. Passing the Buck Isn't it rather strange that your grandfather should be ser iously ill every time there's a big football game on? Office Boy (hesitatingly) Yes, sir. I sometimes wonder if he isn't shammin'. on the 9th day of March 1961, at 10 A.M. Dated Februarv lfith. 1.161 (SEAL) Raymond J. Case County Judse No. 5109 Feb. 20, 27, March 6, 1961. Soil Test Takes About 2 Weeks LINCOLN Routine soil tests ' , require about two weeks, reports Ulverd Alexander, Extension ' agronomist at the University of Nebraska. "It takes about two weeks for , regular tests from the time the soil is mailed in until results are returned to the county. It takes .V about a week longer or a total ; of three weeks to obtain a test on nitrification rates. The breakdown of time re-. quired for completion of the nl- truncation tests Is as follows: 2 days for drying and crushing: 3 days for conditioning; 1 day.- for sample preparation, 10 days for sample incubation, 1 day for -nitrate analysis and 1 day for recording, typing and verifying the results. This is a total of 18 days. In addition you must add some time for mailing and del ivery. ,, "The three-week time limit for nitrification tests Is the mini mum. During rush peroids in ' ' early spring, four weeks are of ten required," Alexander said. 'Well-Fed' Crops Need Less Water LINCOLN It takes only one fourth as much water to produce a bushel of corn on well fertilized soils as on poorly fertilized land, according to a University of Ne braska Extension agronomist. Delno Knudsen reports that in a drought year when corn had to draw on the stored water In the soil, fertilized corn made 79 bushels per acre on one test plot, whereas unfertilized corn made only 18 bushels per acre. 4 The well-fed crop Used 16'' inches of "water and left 1.04 inches in the soil. The unfertil ized jised 14 inches of water and,, left f.U5 Inches in the""solV"at'" harvest time. Thus it took 5,600 gallons of1 water to make a bushel of corn on the fertilized plot, compared to 21,000 gallons per bushel in the unfertilized plot, Knudsen said. "During a dry year in Iowa, when the corn pulled stored wa ter from the soil," says the Na tional Plant Food Institute, "re search men found that fertilized corn drew water from seven feet deep, whereas unfertilized roots were limited to about four or five feet deep." The use of fertilizer increases efficiency of water use in still another way. "As yield go up, more stalks, straw and crop re sidues are available for plowing under," Knudsen points out. "For example, a 100-bushel corn crop gives twice as many tons of stalks as does a 50-bushel yield. When these stalks are put back In the soil, they build hu mus which makes the soil more porous. As a result, more water soaks in and less runs off to be wasted." Building Poultry Ration Difficult LINCOLN The easiest way to mix a good poultry laying ration Involves buying a good commercial concentrate and blending ' it with home-grown feeds to make a complete ra tion with 16 to 17 per cent pro tein. John Skinner, Extension poul tryman at the University of Ne braska, says a good laying ra-i tion for chickens should contain: 16 to 17 per cent protein; not over 5 per cent fiber; not over 3 per cent fat; a minimum of 3 per cent calcium; and at least 900 calories per pound of total diet. "Modern laying rations are complex mixtures containing many ingredients," Skinner points out. "Some of these in gredients are very difficult to obtain and require good equip ment for mixing. Therefore, a commercial concentrate blended with home-grown grains is us ually the most satisfactory ar rangement. It is often very time consuming and uneconomical for the farmer to build a poultry ration from individual items."
