R. was Clarence Schmad eke, Cass County Extension Apent. The award was an all expense paid tr!,o to the National 4-H club Congress at Chicago No vember 27 December 2. Schmadeke has been Exten sion Agent in Cass County since 1948. His energetic promotion of 4-H club work has helped to boost membership by about 70 per cent over the past 14 years. During his tenure as agent, Cass county has produced 18 scholar ship winners, 18 4-H club con gress winners, 39 state champ ions and other award winners. The Burlington railroad, na tion's largest livestock hauler and an Important grain carrier, has been promoting the work of farm youth organizations for 33 years. Extension Office Has New Look The Cass County Extension office has a new look. In fact Is in a new location, just across the street, east from where It has been for several years. The new location Is brighter, more spacious and much more comfortable. There are no velvet rugs but the welcome mat Is always out. The move is made with the anticipation of the Extension Service to better conduct' this business and be of greater ser vice to people in Cass County. Clarence Schmadeke and Martha West Extension Agents Judy Domingo Office Assistant -H Leaders Eeceove Awards 150 Attend Mrs. Lanning Receives Honor Mrs. Orris Lanning, of Eagle was honored as Rural Home maker of the Year from Cass County In Omaha. The Chamber of Commerce held its 14th An nual Recognition Day, May 5. Mrs. Lanning is an active ex tension club member, and at the present time is secretary of the Extension Club Council. Leadabrand of Greenwood and Mrs. Arnold Detmer of Weeping Water were honored for 15 years of 4-H club leadership. Mrs, Eugene Domingo of Weeping Water and Floyd Althouse of Eagle were presented 10 year awards. The following people were honored for 5 years service; Mrs. Clarence Engelkemier and R. A. Noell xt Murray; Mrs. Forrest Engelkemier of Louisville; Don ald Fredenburg and Howard Pool of Elmwood; Harold Gregg of Plattsmouth; Mrs. Delbert Hunston of Ashland; Everett Jose and Mrs. Vincent Rehmeier of Weeping Water; Mrs. Boyne Parson of Cedar Creek and Mar tin Streich of Murdock. Two year awards were pre sented to: Mrs. Roy Engelke mier, Elton Erickson, Everett Erickson, Mrs. Milfored Han sen, Ernest Hild, Henry Hob scheidt, Mrs. Clyde Jipp, Mrs. Orval Kahler, Mrs. Stanley Lepert, Eugene McGill, Mrs. Glenn Miller, Harold Rice, Mrs. Robert Schneider, Mrs. Char les Spangler, Fred Stickney, Mrs. Glen Terryberry, Franklin Wehrbein, Bert Worthan, Mrs. Arthur Toman and Mrs. Robert Wall. Sheep Equipment Plans Available A new book of sheep equip ment plans, is available at the County Extension office. Includ ed in the book are plans for feeders, loading chutes, crates, blocking stand and many other pieces of equipment. This makes the third such set of plans which are available. Earlier this year plan books on Beef and Swine equipment were released. Any of these three are now available. I pX Y w LONGTIME 4-H LEADERS Mrs. Eugene Domingo, Weeping Water, left was honored in 1960 for 10 years leadership of 4-H Clubs; and Mrs. Arnold Detmer of Weeping Water, for 15 years leadership. Extension Clubs Observe Week The Annual Spring Tea was the highlight of the National Home Demonstration Week in Cass County. The Extension Council sponsored the tea, held at Weeping Water, May 3. Two hundred-twenty-five members and guests attended the event. Mrs. Peggy Walton, Home Economist for the Nebraska Wheat Commission, showed slides and told of her trip to Lansanne, Switzerland as a del egate to the International Trade Fair. Mrs. Lucille Dyer, Public Wel fare Director of Cass County, gave a short presentation on Civil Defense in Cass County. The Southeast group of Exten sion clubs were in charge of refreshments. Mrs. Richard Johnson, Nehawka and Mrs. Dennison Price, Murray co chairmen of the Spring Tea committee. Clothing Workshop Mrs. Martha West, County Extension Agent, conducted a beginning clothing workshop for 10 members of the Plattsmouth Woman's Club In October and November, 1960. A series of 5 meetings were held. Each meeting covered con struction problems encountered in making simple garments. Each of the ladies construct ed a dress for practical exper ience in sewing. Kraegers Hosts for Judging Seventy 4-H livestock clulk' members participated in a live; stock practice judging clay. Tlik workshop was held at the Glerr Kmeger farm. Classes of hots... sheep and cattle were judged; the animals belonging to thj: Kraegers, Leonard Harvey and. Joe Lrchman. X Herbert Kraeger and Donald Harvey, former 4-H members and Harold Gregg, a club lead-; er assisted County Agent Sen madeke with the judging work out. , One unexpected activity at the farm that day of July 28 was the disturbance of, whafr was up to that time, a peaceful, nest of wasps. One angry wasp set down and showed his or her; wrath on Bill Saxton. Mrs. Kraeger topped off tho, successful day with cool re freshments and cookies. ThQ, n.raegers were gracious host indeed. Members from both counties' participated in judging poultry. The workout was held in the judging arena of the County Fair barn. Clarence Norris provided the birds to be judged. John Skinner, Extension Poultryman. conducted the judging classes. "; Cass County 4-H'ers were too gracious as hosts as the Sarpy county team out pointed the Cass County 4-H team in the State Contest, held later In the summer.
