(SEAL) Raymond J. Case County Judge No. 5053 Jan. 5, 12, 19, 196L Is Drilling or Row Planting Of Beans Best? LINCOLN Non-Irrigated soybeans produce maximum yields when planted in rows 20 to 21 inches apart, according to studies at the University of Ne braska and other Midwestern experiment stations. "Beans planted in rows 35 to 42 inches apart yielded 10 u 15 per cent less than those planted in rows 20 to 21 inches apart," reports J. C. Swinbank, Exten sion agronomist at the College of Agriculture. "Most soybeans in Nebraska, however, are planted in 36-40 inch rows because the machin ery available In the principle soybean-producing areas is not readily adapted to narrower row spacing." "On land where weeds are well under control, solid drill ings have given yields equal to or greater than the common row spacings," the agronomist points out. "Solid drilling can be re commended only where it is known that the fields are rela tively free of weeds."
