Col. C. J. Sanders, Nebraska Safety Patrol, in reporting on the October deaths, stated that twelve teenagers were included to make that age group outnum ber other age groups. Within a period of three days, Nebraska experienced two accidents which took the lives of 10 in the teen age group. He commented, "These two accidents should remind all of us that the stakes can be very high when we operate an auto mobile carelessly." He then ask ed, "What good is it to spend years of effort and thousands of dollars to educate a youngster if his life is snuffed out in a traf fic accident before he has a chance to apply the knowledge he has learned?" Col. Sanders concluded, "Knowing how to live with the automobile becomes equally as Important as any academic sub ject in the high school curricul um. We urge every parent to set an example and maintain strict observance to the traffic rules. Also, if possible, to have their boy or girl take a driver educa tion course." Be Careful In Use of Laundry Bleach Chlorine bleaches and wash -and - wear fabrics often come in contact with an unhappy result - yellowiing or discoloration. Many of the resins used in finishes of wash and wear are chlorine retentive, which means yellowing and discoloration are certain to result. To be entirely safe, never use a chlorine bleach on wash and wear. In case the damage is done, the discoloration frequently can be removed by using Rit Color remover, sodium thiosulfate, or photographer's "hypo". Mix one tablespoon of any of the three preparations with one gallon of water and one-fourth cup white vinegar. Stir the solution until thoroughly mixed and dip the damaged fabric in the solution until it is saturated. The action is immediate. Only when the fabric is heavy will a longer sub merging time be needed. There is one danger from such treatment. The finish may be completely removed. The treat ment. The finish may be com pletly removed. The treatment will not be effective if heat has been applied to the fabric after it has been discolored, causing it to become set. Grant Roberts Mayor Attest: Albert Olson City Crk No.' 5010 Nov. 14, I960 PAGE SEVEi-' Rodents Are Abroad By State of Nebraska Department of Health This is the time of the year when unwelcome guests are seeking entry to our homes. Millions of mice will be enter ing houses, barns, and granar ies for food and shelter. When ' they find food, water, and rea sonable comfort available, mice travel a very limited distance in any direction. They eat, nest, and raise many young which grow up and repeat the pattern. One pair of house mice, in favorable sur roundings, has about CO young a year. They have 6 to 10 litters a yeaf- with 6 to 8 per litter. Mice mature in 2 to 3 months and live up to about one year. It is easier to kill a single pair than all of their offspring to come. Do not wait until you see signs of mice. Guard against them be fore they have a chance to start. They are habitually nocturnal and secretive and are rarely seen except when heavy infesta t i o n s are encountered. They serve no good purpose. The house mouse, the smallest of domestic rodents, is wide spread and abundant throughout the United States. It is found, from the tropics to the Aartic regions. Mice have forever plag ued mankind. As early as 4000 B. C. records show they bother ed roaming Asiatic tribes. As health hazards, mice are not especially bad, but they are pests, and they are dirty. In six months one pair of mice will eat about four pounds of food and deposit about 18,000 droppings. The filth causes more contamina tion and loss than the food act ually consumed by them. They also cause property damage by gnawing on buildings, furniture, clothing, and other things. Effective and permanent con trol of rodents can be attained only through a continuous sanita tion program. Every hole more than one-fourth inch in diameter may provide mice with an entry. Human foods and animal feeds and 'grains are especially at tractive to them. Fibrous mat erials like clothing, bedding, and rags make perfect nesting mat-, erial . Droppings, gnawings, tracks in dust, noises, and glimpses of the mice themselves tell where they, are active and guide in where' to rjlace baits nnH trans. Close all openings and cracks in foundation walls. Make sure that windows and rirvirs near ground level fit tightly, and use metal flashing at door bottoms. Cover openings around pipes and foundation with cement or one fourth iinch mesh wire screen ing. Pull in the welcome mat when it comes to mice. ' Supplements Will Pay Their Way When cattle and hogs are fed protein supplements while clean, ing cornfields, the gain in weight is more than enough to pay the cost of the supplements, according University of Ill inois livestock specialists. They cite one trial in which cattle gained s, pound more per head daily when they received a protein supplement. In this case, each dollar spent for supplement returned $2.85. And the aver-, age of 13 Corn Belt states show ed that pigs receiving supple ment each gained Vi 'pound more daily while gleaning cornfields; each bushel of corn produced 4.5 more pounds of pork when supplement was fed; and each pound of supplement saved 6.4 pounds of corn. Thus, if corn in the field is worth only 50 cents a bushel, a supplement must cost more than $6 per hundred pounds before it is too expensive to feed. Brag K. Nehru, Commissioner General for Economic Affairs at United Nations: "We represent here the collec tive conscience of humanity. It would disclose a sorry state of affairs if that collective consci ence were found to be so dulled as to seek ways and means of escaping its responsibility." Fidel Castro, Premier of Cuba: "If our enemies attack us soon, it will be bad for them. but if they wait, it will be worse."
